Let's see, what continent has .83 not covered yet? South America? En route. Asia? Yup. Europe? Yup. North America? Snore. Gee would anyone we know ever manage to set foot on Antarctica? Why yes! Our man Charlie (CM media liason extraordinaire) is at the South Fucking Pole for the next 4 months. He was going to see if Surly could hook him up with a rig that could handle -70F singletrack, but I guess that idea fell to the wayside while he was deciding on how many pairs of wool undies to bring. Woulda made some great fun for the Surly Blog.

North America includes Canada too, sweetie. Trust me, I'm a geographer. :)

Or we could cast it a new category: The Far Fucking North That Took Our Scotty Away. :(

Canada's cool and all, but I'll tell ya what, Antarctica is freaking COLD!
We're forecast to get up to +4 tomorrow, which is the warmest I've seen yet. And I'm still on the coast. We can't get into the South Pole yet cause it's too cold (go figure) the temeprature there needs to get to above -50 for us to fly. And it's not done that yet.

As for the snow bike, Jill's right, I couldn't get my act together to make that happen what with all the prep for the trip anyway.... but a friend I met on the way here (he's actually from Seattle and bikes a bunch though he's never done CM, his name is Nick and he has a brother who's a messenger in town) had a snow bike built that is supposed to be on its way to Pole. Runor has it there's a few bikes down there, so the dream may yet be realized for the first ever south pole CM... It'll be a day ahead of yours though. We're on NZ time.

Thinking of you all and your really warm environs....

How would a bike hold up under those extreme tempertures? How does it affect air pressure? And how do you keep it from freezing up?

What constitutes a snow bike?

Just curious.

Stay warm Charlie! If you see any of those March of the Penguins things take a few pics. And please keep us updated on any two wheeling. I'm with Jeff and curious about how to keep the poor things from freezing over (a bike sweater!!). It'd be cool to do an experiment between steel, aluminum, titanium, and carbon paper to see which would do best down thar.

I'll ask Nick about keeping the bike from freezing.... Though I assume that while riding, it's much less likely to freeze the moving parts. I'll also check in on the deatils of what makes a snow bike though I do know it has really wide tires and that when he rode it at home up gravel hills and such, it was massively easy to ride.
more later.
peace.

Wide tires and low pressure. 10 to 15 psi. I don't think the low temp should affect the pressure since it is relative. But then I have never been below 9 deg. F.

Send us more pics! I enjoy reading your adventures!

Metals can get brittle at that temperature. Lubricants can freeze.

Skin flash freezes starting at around -40.
