Just a month ago, the Hazel Wolf Environmental Film Networks (HWEFN) and 911 Media Arts Center started a monthly Green Film Series which is co-sponsored among others by the Sierra Club Seattle Group (see attached press release for the November kick-off event). The outline for these film evenings is the screening of two movies—a short film and a longer documentary—followed by discussing the subject’s local relevance with panel guests representing the topics in question.
For the January-5 showing the theme is going to be “Blueprint for a Bikeable City.” We feature two movies, a short film called “Easy Rollin’” and a one-hour documentary about the history of the Critical Mass movement in San Francisco which not only spread to Seattle but also established roots worldwide, called “(We Aren’t Blocking Traffic) We Are Traffic!”(more film info, see “Other websites of interest” below).

I'm planning on going, I told my self I'd go to the next one and figure out what they talk about at these things. I had a friend that had massaged Seattle's GIS bike data into byCycle. It was in a usable test state but there were still certainly some bugs (it sent you the wrong way onto the UBridge). He made contact with members of the advisory board but they didn't seem to care so he's pretty much dropped the project.

Tonight, ABC's 20/20 will be featuring the gentleman (Ian Walker?) that studied the relationship between a helmet wearing bicyclist and overtaking motor vehicle distances. Additionally, the trailer mentioned that Canadian and Australian studies (apparently these countries have some sort of mandatory helmet laws) indicate helmet laws are ineffective as helmets discourage bicycle use and/or contribute to higher risk behavior.
I don't brings this up to start another list holy war, I mention it only so that we may be prepared to respond to potential inquires from students, coworkers and neighbors that may view the show.

Interestingly enough, there is also some additional interesting analysis he pulled out of the data.
Quote:
Another analysis from Ian Walker at Bath University that shows the room that motorists give cyclists increases linearly during the day and is 8" more on average at the 17:00 compared to 07:00.

i'm guessing the brown bag they're talking about isn't the one smuggling that bottle of night train express, but i'm definitely thinking of nipping off work in the afternoon and checking this out:

Update: Temporary Changes to Bike Lane Ramp on Fremont Bridge North Approach
(Seattle)—Starting the week of June 25th and through September, bicyclists traveling northbound on the Fremont Bridge, on the sidewalk on the east side of the bridge, will use a temporary ramp to reach the bike lane on Fremont Avenue North. The temporary ramp will be located north of the existing ramp.
Through September, with the exception of three two-leaf openings per day, the north half of the bridge will remain closed and only the south half of the bridge will open for marine traffic. This will allow the contractor to upgrade the bridge mechanical and electrical system.
The temporary ramp for bicycles is needed for safety, so a truck can be parked in the location of the existing ramp, in position to move quickly onto the bridge to block traffic when the bridge opens for marine traffic. The truck will serve as an additional barricade to help prevent cars from continuing onto the north half of the bridge when the south half of the bridge is opened for marine traffic.
Thank you for your patience during this final phase of improvements on the Fremont Bridge.
