In the thread about Santarchy, Langston mentioned the use of Dodgeball.com.
I won't bore you with a lengthy overview other than to say it would be an excellent tool for meeting up in the middle of a Point83 ride, wrangling folks that got separated duing same and also arranging spontaneous bike + beer activities. It works via Text/SMS over mobile phones and appears to be now owned by Google, so you know it isn't evil.
P.S. Derrick, I think you could meet a lot of myspace girls with this service...

Or we could just invite Roy Wilkie to the rides again.

It's fun, and you can turn it off when you don't want messeges bugging you. Not to be used if you get charged for individual text messeges.

Texting is like sayng, "I don't have the time to talk to you... but I do have ten minutes to type one sentence into my phone. Mostly, I want to tell you something, but don't really want to talk to you." I called my phone company and had the whole feature blocked. So nice.

dodgeball is nice because it sends it to all the people you have specified at once, and it will also bleep back and tell you if other db users are nearby.

That's what you get for "Kiss and Texting" to half of .83 at 2:45 in the morning.
55$ that's pretty funny

I am using dodgeball via email on a Treo so I don't get charged per text message.
I pay a flat data fee and that's it. Now, this only makes sense if you need mobile email in the first place, which I do.
Assuming more than three Point83 folks signed up, I was intending to group them.
That way, when on a ride you could hit
Point83 ! at the Taco Truck headed to Denny Blaine park
and everyone at various points on the ride would know.
I missed a ride last Thurs and would have jumped on if I knew where people were. I felt a little awkward ringing up the few folks whose numbers I have but thats on me, not you guys.
At any rate, I thought it was cool and had myriad bikes + beer applications (not to mention anonymous sex (derrick!)).
BtaH, when you're behind the Old Spaghetti Factory being a sex offender you can let us all know via dodgeball and if we're within ten blocks we'd be able to come and lend a hand or show up with pepper spray.
Cheers,
James

Yeah, Derrick, think of the leverage inherent in pinging all your ladies with one message and think of the group sex possibilities. After a couple months, you could afford another Wound Up fork based on the savings alone and that is without monetizing the the video you could shoot.

Does it have the ability to setup a broadcast to a group, or just all your "friends". If this could be setup so that someone can broadcast the location of the .83 ride it might be worth while.

Yes, you can create groups.
I only envision using this for Point83 and also to arrange spontaenous pre-school playdates for my three-year-old. Gotta pimp for the little guy.
Without groups, we'd have all these soccer moms and their tykes showing up at all hours or BtAH (assuming he signs up) showing up at the wading pool.

Orion friended me this morning. Then KEXP called about hiring me. Not sure which excites me more.

Cell phones are the work of Stan [sic], so of course I've signed up for this dubious service.

It has nothing to do with rlotz's marital status, I assure you. He's just a snob. He throws a fucking fit every time I even mention myspace.
He just uses me to pick up chicks for him, anyway :(
