So some lovely riders in Victoria invited .83 up for a ride (through me, via the calendar info) for a 'mystery ride' on March 30th/31st. There is a chance they have a little bit of housing/place to sleep that Friday night.
Anyone want to join me? I'm thinking about it, but I'm a big lazy person and won't ride alone. I'm thinking of riding to Anacortes then catching a ferry across, unless someone else knows a cheaper way? The ferry from Seattle is too much cash for this little rider.
Sounds fun! Though too far in advance for me to say for sure. Thats around the time of my "tattoo road trip"
Remind me in a month or so ;)

ooh, was it spc and my friend ellen? she did promise to invite .83 up to ride with her posse of sexy foreign bicycling ladies (and probably some men too, eh?)
the seattle-victoria ferry is pretty spendy. i don't know about the ferry from anacortes, but it's like $12 to take the ferry from port angeles, which i bet is a very pretty ride in places.
has anyone done downtown, across bainbridge and up to port angeles?

i like the idea of riding on the west side of the sound. i've driven it: gorgeous!
also, it wasn't Ellen, it was Lindsay (speedking on .83 forums) but i think they ride together!

i suggest crossing at kingston. better ride, less traffic.
also the hood canal road west of the sound is terrible to bike on.

I'd definitely get those bike maps. I've only ridden as far as Poulsbo from Winslow, but it help to know which backroads to use to get off the highway. Going Edmonds/Kingston is a good idea, but I think you can avoid most of the highway from Winslow to the Hood Canal Bridge using back roads (including Big Valley Road out of Poulsbo). The Hood Canal Bridge seems unavoidable without going way out of your way or taking the Whidbey Island Ferry (from Mukilteo).

My parents live in Port Angeles, so I've ridden up there. They have about eight acres and would be fine with us camping out up there. I was thinking about seeing if anyone else was interested in riding out there this summer. Hurricane ridge is always a nice ride (though probably not for the fixed crowd [1]).
It's about 75-80 miles if I recall correctly. It's not great, it's not terrible (with the exception of the Hood Canal Bridge - which sucks).
[1] 17 miles up at average of 6% grade. 17 miles down.

hey all,
i'm sorry to say that i don't know any ellen... but tell her to come to recyclistas some sunday, cuz it'd be great to meet her.
our march midnight moonlight mystery ride is actually on the 9th (they're always on the second friday), though as i wrote to piratemolly, we victoria kids are always up for late night bike adventures...
the breaking news is that we *are* having a big party weekend on march 30-31st, which'll probably involve a race of some sort (poker run?), some bands, a film night, chaos and art. oh yeah, and beer. good beer!
the ferry from your harbour to ours is about $100 round trip (see the Victoria Clipper website), and the one from port angeles is about $36 for a person with a bike (see the Coho Ferry website). the ferries from anacortes go to the harbour in sidney, which is a little town just north of our tiny city: it's about an hour or so on a nice cycling trail to get to victoria from there.
i hope we can get this to happen!

I'm interested. I won't be riding all the way there, probably taking a train or bus to Everett (or points north) and then catching a ride/bus/?? to Anacortes.

Coho ferry is sweet. It is run by the blackball line, a venerable passagemaker if ever there was one. One of the two captains is my friend Jon's dad.
Whatever you do though, do not book passage on the Victoria Express. The family that owns this ferry line are hummer driving chodemunchers. Their boats are also not as seaworthy as the Coho.
I am serious about the hummers too. My gf worked for this horrible family for a season, and not only do they drive hummers, but they drive hummers with fake testicles hanging from the trailer hitch.
There is work being done on a big trail that extends from Pt. Townsend west. I think the idea is to have it go all along the S. shore of the strait, passing through Sequim and PA as it goes. I am not sure how far along the construction is, but it is worth checking out though, it would be a really great ride.

me too! i'm thinking i and others will have to skip work/school ride up on friday morning to the anacortes ferry, then bop on over to your lovely neck of the woods. sounds rad! langston has a good poin though, catching a bus/train part of the way. i'm sorta lazy for a bike rider.

I have always wanted to get out to Victoria! Would I need to put a rush on getting a passport to do this?

to get to canada these days you're supposed to have two forms of id: driver's license and passport / birth certificate.
Effective January 23, 2007, all U.S. citizens traveling by air to and from Canada are required to have a valid passport to enter the United States. As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and Canada by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries. American citizen travelers are encouraged to apply for a U.S. passport or the passport card when it becomes available, well in advance of anticipated travel.

You just never know when you'll need to flee the country.
Or when United will accidentally sell tickets to England for $90.
Or when you'll decide you can't live without Adrastos, and must follow him home to the island of Mykonos.

heya folks,
the latest news from 'round here is that the big bike event weekend we'd been planning for the last weekend in march has been moved later, to the 2nd weekend in april. that's the 13th to the 15th. current fun-ness in the works include races, film screenings, bands, and a bike prom. woo hoo!
so. if yer gonna bike north, here's something to make it worth your while.

Well the later date is good for another reason as Washington State ferries don't start Running from Anacourtes to Sidney until April 1st. And even then IIRC it's generally a noon or noon-thirty-ish sailing. That would mean getting up at the butt crack of early if you really want to ride up there and take the ferry to BC. I've ridden from Seattle to Anacortes and caught the ferry to San Juan many times (my mom lives there) but I've never tried to catch a ferry before 2:00, and I'm pretty quick on a bike.
It can be done, but it would definitely take some doing.

There's a washington state camp ground RIGHT at the ferry docks in Anacortes.

well, no. that would be a bit much, as many of our local riders also make pilgrimages to pdx on a regular basis and so know quite well the loveable city of which you write. we cannot compete, and would not dare try.
however, seattle and victoria share a bioregion, a body of water, an earthquake hazard zone... it seems like we oughta at least get to know one another, if not expect to fall in love.

I do love the Princess Vic. Beautiful little city ya got there, I enjoyed the hell out of Queens Day the few times I've been up for it. I'm really looking forward to getting up there, hostelling it and seeing the sites. A few of us will be riding Vancouver Island this summer too, so we'll be there for that.

For reals, Joby. Except sometimes big kids have their passports stolen, in which case they would need to put a rush on the re-application.
March 30th? Finally, I'm in!

You can take Amtrak to Mt. Vernon, then catch a (FREE!) Island Transit bus to almost Anacortes. It's the route 411W and you can pick it up right at the train station.
Weekday: http://islandtransit.org/page.cfm?pageID=2470
Saturday: http://islandtransit.org/page.cfm?pageID=2472
Get off at March's Point P&R, head for the old RR trestle just to the north, which has been converted to a very nice bike path (The Tommy Thompson Trail) that takes you right into downtown Anacortes. From there, a few miles of highway brings you to the ferry terminal. I've done this before, it's pretty slick, but wouldn't work for a group because there's only 2 spots on the transit bike rack, but I suppose that you could also ride the distance between Mt. Vernon and Anacortes.
If you don't want to be spendy on Amtrak (remember, extra $5 for the bike) you can also take Community Transit as far north as Stanwood.
Alternatively, there are buses that will take you to Pt. Townsend from the Bainbridge terminal; see:
http://www.jeffersontransit.com/files/Seatac_01_24_07.pdf
(just ignore the airport segment)
Then I think there’s a bike trail that goes to Pt. Angles on an old RR grade, but I’ve never used it and I don’t know how complete it is.

Alright, I've had enough of the speculation; the bike maps you need are on the web:
Tomorrow I'll see if I can send away for a hard copy of the Olympic peninsula and Kitsap maps (I already have a Snohomish County map). But right now, I have to do my taxes (Brrrrr).

Fuck spending money on transportation when we have legs. Anyone in with me to do this the cheapest way where we actually get to ride our bikes instead of taking trains and busses? Because riding bikes is what we're all about!

Well, you do have to take some form of non-bike transport to get to Vancouver Island. But I'd agree that if I were going, I'd try to do it all by bike + ferry/ferries. Apart from the cheapness factor, once you get into the countryside, riding bikes on Western Washington (and Western BC) backroads is awesome.
