No tickets that I saw, but I did see the cop roughin up the dude who's bike go confinscated. He grabbed him and almost pushed him over. Way police brutality.

Glorious Disaster in my eyes.

I don't know this guy's name, anyone? He got a ticket for $180+ and got his bike confiscated. For riding his bicycle. Go SPD, thanks for keeping the streets safe.

Hey everyone,

I think we should all write letters to the Mayor, the Chief of Police, the city council and the media.

Since when is it OK for the police to confiscate a bike (vehicle) when someone just runs a red light? Would they impound someone's car for that?

wtf?

I personally and going to get a personal meeting with the Chief of Police to talk about the police enforcement of traffic laws and critical mass. On upside I did see was a bike cop giving a car driver a ticket in a parking lot. She had pulled him over and he was bitching up a storm about something.

What I don't understand is why the East Precinct cops have to be such assholes. We got close to zero police attention everywhere else we rode.

They weren't ass-holes, the were ass-hats!

I totally agree. WTF it is not like it was the WTO. (and the WTO was civil too, but what you saw on TV was just the media sensationalizing the bad apples). We were being pretty damn civil if you ask me.

What I want to get the police to understand is that it is much safer to keep the group together and that is why we cork.

SPD has confiscated bikes during seattle critical mass before. And I think the last time was in the capitol hill area as well.

I believe there are a bunch of reasons they can confiscate a bike. A few years ago when they pulled over about 10 massers to issue them tickets, one of the SPD guys said that if the rider didn't show ID that the SPD was allowed to take the bike away. Maybe that's what happened on Friday - the person didn't have or want to show ID? Or was he actually arrested? If that was the case then the SPD can steal the bike on the grounds that it's a safety hazard (since it would just be laying on a sidewalk, etc.).

Also, here's a zoobomb thing from a few years ago that relates to police stealing bikes:

Hey-
Does anyone know the name or contact info of the guy who got the $180 ticket? I want to help him pay it off. If everyone pitches in just a couple bucks, it'll be taken care of. When we look after our own, then the cops don't have as much power over us.

Yes yes, I was discussing this a bit with one of the guys I work with. I'd be willing to throw in a tenner or something too

Yeah! i was stewing over this all last night. maybe, a collection box at next mass? we all ran that red light. i'd like to find this guy and collectively pay the ticket, if it comes to that. no one should be singled out.

What are the consequences for simply not paying the ticket?

The cops were acting very panicky and it had the feel of a situation where they were completely unprepared and probably had only been told "There's a large mass of bikers heading up the hill". I really don't think they knew what we were doing. The irony is that we would have moved through capitol hill in less than 15 minutes and been gone. Instead they turned the mass into a mess.

When I hear a cop yelling at a group of people and his voice is cracking I know he's not in control. This kind of experience for the cops is going to create worse behavior for us the next time. Cops absolutely want control of a situation and if that means more cops and more extreme behavior next time then that's what we'll see.

To me CM is about raising awareness and having fun. If we avoid capitol hill then we're essentially encouraging their behavior. What would be great is if somehow the cap hill cops could talk to the downtown cops and get their take on the whole thing. We've been followed several times downtown and only gotten (what appeared to be) support from them.

Yeah, I agree that avoiding cap hill is a bad idea.. but I know most people will be too afraid or whatever to head that way anytime soon in Mass.

why don't we instead hire a lawyer and fight the ticket. someone might pick this up pro-bono. i don't know any details of what happened besides what's here. usually CM tickets that are fought are won, from what i know. could be wrong here.

i forgot about CM, weird, so i was not there.

i don't see any reason to avoid capitol hill. that's what they want us to do... not come back.

Fuck Capitol Hill, it is too hilly!
Just kidding. But we ALWAYS go there it seems. 2 out of the last 3 times at least.

Let's go to West Seattle or Southpark!

I have a message into the Chief of Police's executive secretary requesting a meeting to discuss the police and their attitude toward bicyclists. I have some pull since I am a citizen of Seattle AND own a business in the city.
