he was on his way down to the 24 hour bike ride and got taken out by a car coming out of a driveway. messed up his brand new bionic parts (broke his colarbone again?).. he was going under the knife to have everything reseterized.

Guess that explains why he didn't enter any Ride in the Rain stats this week.

Whole E Schitt!
Which hospital? I'm unemployed at the moment and have plenny spare time, I could go visit.

Bama, if you're reading this, get well soon!

I've had to take evasive action to avoid being flattened by inattentive folks in their cars many times, it pains me to know that once again somebody got tagged. Ugh.

Not like I need to say it, but BE CAREFUL, folks!

I guess Finn gets the dubious honor of being the first recipient of a .83 'Disabled List' spoke card. Unless there are objections, I'm willing to create a small batch of these (I would hope we wouldn't need a large batch), but I've never made spoke cards before. Still, it looks to me like I should be able to. Someone tell me if I have the process right:

1. Using your favorite office software, tile image A as many times as will fit on one sheet of paper. On the second sheet, tile image B. The .83 spoke card I have looks like it was tiled 9 to a page.

2. Print the file double-sided using a good quality color printer.

3. Cut into the appropriate number of pieces.

4. Go to a copy shop and have them laminate the pieces.

My main question is whether I should use a particular weight of paper stock, or a particular thickness of plastic for lamination. Seems like the plastic at least needs to be fairly heavy-duty.

Finn, that is some rotten luck, heal up. I hope you are doing well.

In regards to the DL cards, I thought scars and aerospace hardware spoke for themselves.

Yeah, pretty much. I just paste the same image into a jpg and arrange them with a known border width and use one of those razor table things at Kinkos to cut them up.

As to paper weight, thicker it better, but you're better off with thicker laminating material than thicker paper. Stay away from textured paper too.

Depending on the place, laminate then cut. Make sure to leave them spaced out enough so that there is room to cut.

This post used to say something else, but I've decided to condense it into a succinct summary: I am a dork.

Carry on.

Brief update for now: Me vs. car on eastlake. Bike looked terminal. Pretty drugged up an looking at a similar recovery to last time. The accident messed up my bone/hardware, so they pulled it out and put new stuff in. I got home today and my Mom is coming to town to take care of me for a while. Thanks for all your concern. More updates later.
Love,
Alabama

i said this on the phone but you might have been doped up.

if you need ANYTHING (thai hookers included) while you're recovering, dont hesitate to ask. i know you're without car and bike right now, so just yell around if you need help with errands or a lift or anything. we got your back.

I'll help fix your bike when you get healed enough to bring it to my shop. Take the bus! I'll buy the beer! So what happened with the car? Did they stop? Were they at fault? Hit and run? Say, you should save those metal bits they took out of you. Weld them to your next bike or something. Get well soon. We will all miss you AGAIN!

Another update: Thanks for all the support, y'all. Mom's got things under control for this week, but the future may hold a Quicksilver/ Help me do my laundary party. I was entirely within laws, right of way, etc, so I'm fairly certain the cop placed fault on the driver. The driver did stop, pull the remants of my bike off the road, call the ambulance, etc. Not a bad guy. But as I'll be handicapped for the next few months, I'll be looking for a good personal injury attourney. Any leads? Also the firefighters took my bike to Fire Station 22. If anyone with a car feels like picking that up for me, that would be a huge help. Anyway, my neck muscles are in complete disarray, so I've got to lay down again. More later...
oh, I DO have my old hardware; It'll make a bitchen headbadge.

i can't vouch for him personally (my bike injuries have been completely due to my own stupidity) but john duggan specializes as an attorney in cycling-related cases. i know alistair used him and seemed pretty happy and folks from cascade seem to recommend him as well.

Hey Finn,

I can vouch for him personally,

I've been working with Duggan, he's a good guy. Give him a call tomorrow and get him and his paralegal Mary in on your case as fast as possible... I mean... if he is in on your case now versus later isn't going to make a difference on the cut he takes, and you will be free of dealing with the paperwork. It's worth it, more worth it if you get your attorney working early on, his group knows the forms and the procedure regarding bikes better than anyone in town that I talked to. Pretty quick you will start getting bills from hospitals, and having Mary there to run point is beneficial for you. Hell, my wife is a paralegal and she is glad we have Duggan's paralegal running point.

Call me if you need ~anything~ (Aaron or any of the ABR guys can give you my number), I am still not able to ride on the road... but when I am on the road, you can borrow my rollers and forkstand.

BTW: replaced bionics... dude... you get ++ points for that on the crash factor.

John

Okay, I've made up six completely amateurish 'Disabled List' spoke cards. I won't be on the Thursday ride (kid-watching), but I gave them to Adam, who's supposed to pass them on to Derrick, who I reason will be the most likely contact for Finn and any future hospital cases.

For future reference, the copy place I went to had two sizes of laminating material: credit card sized, and full piece of paper sized. It seems smarter to me to cut up after the laminating process, particularly if you put the design on two pieces of paper --- cutting them up first and then putting them between the plastic (which is the dumb thing I did) means that for every card you have to line up the two pieces of paper, put them between the plastic, and then readjust when you find your movements caused some other pieces to move.

Anyway, here's hoping we don't have to make up any more any time soon. But if we do, I can probably make up a fresh batch pretty quick now that I've done it once.

duplex printing or simply pasting your two card faces together prior to cutting would solve that problem.

i definitely think that laminating the cut cards as a group is a superior solution, if you leave adequate whitespace between the cards to get a good edge seal.

I agree, but my good color printer didn't do duplex, and the glue solution didn't occur to me until after I was well and truly committed to my dumbass mode of operation.

By white you mean clear, right?

The cards Derrick gave out at one of the last Greenlake races all came apart.

I have a 4 X 6" laminator if anyone needs to make some fun spoke cards.

yeah. last two sets that i made i had bad luck with. i was using the larger card stock laminate

im doing another run before friday, im going to try the thinner type and see if i have better luck with that. i was looking at old spoke cards on my bike from a few years ago and they all seem to be made with this stock and have held up well

the card you gave me a few weeks ago was totally unsealed on two of the edges. I took an iron to it and it's in much better shape now.

I recieved my DL card today, in the spokes of a pretty mangled wheel. The card looks awesome. I pray I'm the only one riding it this year. I'm doing better and better. I can mostly lift my head now. Weaning off the narcotics and hoping to return to school/work this week. Albeit, via the bus, and pretty handicapped. Thanks to everyone who checked up on me. Y'all are good folks.

Also, if you can imagine pulling screws out of drywall... inside your body:
