How grueling are these rides? I'm kinda out of shape and a bit worried about over-doing it (on my fixie, my ONLY bike).

I'm planning on riding it on my fg, but I also plan on walking up hills and drinking beer.

This is a good plan.

It's the Bainbridge Island loop. Tens of thousands of weekend warriors ride it every year, not counting Chilly Hilly weekend. I'm pretty sure the course even cuts out a hill or two (I don't think they take Toe Jam Hill, for example).
In short, even though I don't know you, I think you can ride it. Particularly if you're willing to push your bike up the hills.

count me in.
if need be, i can help plan it.
however if i plan it, it will probably be a rolling party rather than a race.

i just talked to justin (who handled it last year).. he's too busy this year and is handing it off to me to man handle.
im going to put all the details together and start a new thread for it in a few days.
im hoping to ride it (will be my 3rd year), if anyone wants to volunteer to be the finish line chili warmer and "wait around for riders to come in" person, that would be fantastical. ill handle the bib printing, pricing, prizes and all that.

Where did you guys eat chili last time? How long did it take for everyone to make it back?

This sounds like a mission for the support crews (spouses and GFs) It would be a way for them to be involved with a ride without the saddle sores.

our meet up point is going to be on the seattle side of the ferry. we'll go over together as a group, then shoot out all at once.
our end point was down on the docks by the marina on the boardwalk. probably going to be the same this year. ill try to get directions to the end point so we dont have as much confusion as last year. it's a little hidden.

Ah, it all comes back to chili. I'm so on top of chili making for this. I can make unreasonably good chili for not a lot of cash. For each pound of meat used, I need:
3 cans of beans
1 can tomato paste
1 can crushed tomatos
1 onion
1 red/yellow/green bell pepper
2 cloves garlic
I'll provide my own secret spices and it will be hot. I have experience using chicken, turkey, beer, buffalo and venison. Never made veggie, so someone else may want to grab that. If you guys give me money, I'll shop and make all the chili for meat eaters, but I want to ride the FHR this year.
Let me know.
and yes ill definately call in your help closer to the ride

also, for all the hippies out there, "Fantastic" brand veggie chili mix is dynomite with a little sprucing up, not to mention sold in bulk for very very cheap at the ballard market.
by very very cheap, i mean we could feed the entire group for less than 15 dogs.

if i recall correctly. this is where we ate last time. it was nice, but we had fortunate weather. it would have been tres shitty if it'd been raining since there's no shelter there.
last time justin made two huge pots of chili and brought them in my trailer to reheat on a coleman while ya'll did the race.
some old dudes thought we were itinerant wanderers, bicycle hobos if you were. that was probably because justin looked like warmed death and was sleeping soundly on the dock.

I can confirm this Fantastic chili tastiness, having been raised vegetarian and all.
"But wait, what is this 'meat' in the chili though?" you ask. That my friend is TVP.

So which ride are we talking about here?
Is Chilly Hilly the same thing as The Fucking Hills Ride?

Chili is vegan by definition. Chili con carne is what ya'll are talking about.
I have been known to make a bitchin' vegan chili and I will be bringing my tall bike Xtracycle so I could bring some stuff.
Anyone like hot sauce?
If it is raining, we should definatly plan on a covered location.

Jeez, how many people are coming? That's like 1/2 a dog per person. Are these chihuahuas we're talking about or what? I have experience making chili out of mongrels, but if we're talking about chihuahuas someone else may want to grab them.

So, having looked at the pics and read the responses here, am I correct in my assumption that this isn't a die-hard "race" type ride? It all looks fairly low-key.
I figure I could probably handle it. Are there any special preparations I should take care of? (I'm thinking at least I'll want some toe-warmers.)
Goddammit but I'm jonesing to RIDE! UPS better hurry the fuck up and get my new chainring to ABR, I'm going nuts here!

It's as serious as you want it to be and there are enough people that do it that however you are approaching it there are more like you, so no worries.

Friday. Bring your bike by Friday unless we call you earlier. Do you want to borrow a rental? They are basic MTBs but they work. Also, I am sure someone else here has a bike you could borrow.

Rental: maybe. In all honesty, the lack of a ridable bike has been inspiring all manner of thoughts about getting a new (read: second) bike for just these occasions (hence the Kirk thread in W&G). I've also considered buying a 60cm Bareknuckle frame to build up, but I'll have to check the geometry and I've lost or misplaced the "Performance Version" of my fit (vs the "Comfort Version"). Additionally, I don't know if the Bareknuckle is burly enough for me et cetera ad nauseam.
If somebody has a large-frame bike that you don't mind a 250+ lbs., 6'4" sweaty guy riding for the next few days, do let me know.

Pretty much any frame is going to be able to support you. I can order the Bare Knukle. I can also re-do your fits and give you print-outs. That is easy. The "rental", btw is free.

Does the group stick together for FHR or is it every man for himself until the end?
This is a lot easier than I thought it would be… 33 miles? For some reason I got it in my head that the Chilly Hilly did a loop around Mt. Rainier. Does that ride exist?
Anyway, I definitely want to do this ride now. And vegan chili sounds good :)

You're thinking of RAMROD
last year was every man for himself. but it would be cooler to ride as a group. although i'll be hauling ass on aaron's tandem in my sweet 'lina costume.
Yeah, I'd like to ride in a group. I'm looking forward to getting shitfaced on a Cascade ride.

well, maybe i overstepped my bounds but in the interests of cycling ecumenicalism i offered reciprocal admission to any registered chilly hilly riders who wanted to join the race. i figure it makes sense.
so i guess that means we need to bring some extra beer?

33 miles of hills, drunk, at the standard pointhomodateythree pace...that sounds almost as much fun as the 24 hours of where-the-fuck-are-we?!?
seriously...count the triker in...and I have a burley trailer so I can haul a cooler full of beer or food in if necessary. I might even bring some newly acquired tuneage for the trip as well!

If you bring tunes let me clue you to some of our tatses:
Henry - anything by Journey, infact if you have the greatest hits package that will do.
Ben the Hippy - anything by crusty old white dudes (Neil Young, Townes, the Band). NO cRAP! says Ben.
Derrick - Not quite sure but I'm guessing he likes mall punk so something by some band named Dying Thursday Bleeding Down the Well will probably work.
Vann - Total snob, he only likes wax-cylinder recordings of early blues legends from the late 1920s (preferably on loan from Alan Lomax).
