All right suckers. I'm riding my ass up to Bellingham on Saturday on my fixie for the SOLE PURPOSE of grabbing a pint (or two) of beer at Boundary Bay.
Anybody who wants to come with is more than welcome.
It's about 110 miles. Leaving my house behind U-Village at 6am (maybe more like 7am). This ride takes me 8 hours on a geared bike, so I have no idea how long it'll take fixed. I plan to take the Amtrak back down to Seattle on Saturday night.

shit. bob, what's your route of choice? last summer i did the highway 9 route and it was just rolling hills the whole way. i'm not sure i would have had a very good time on my fixed gear.

- Burke Gilman to Woodinville
- Some winding back roads to Snohomish
- Coffee break
- Centennial Trail to Arlington
- West on 531 toward Stanwood & Conway, arrive in Mt. Vernon
- Chuckanut Hwy to Bellingham
- Chuckanut to State Street, ride past the HUB, left on Holly, left on Railroad, arrive Boundary Bay

I just bought my train ticket. It's actually a little steep, considering how cheap it is to drive. $31 for fare + bicycle.
I don't expect the bicycle spots to fill up, but it's not a bad idea to buy a ticket in advance.

Bob, you are not factoring in all the costs of driving like road wear and tear, military, pollution, insurance, etc. The feds gives us 48 cents per mile.
The train is way cheaper!

I've done this ride with Bob and it was fine (our group rode slower though). If you can do 30 or 40 miles without much discomfort you'll be ok.
definitely make sure you're carrying a snickers or two in case you feel like you're gonna bonk. There are long stretches where food will not be readily found.

When I rode up to Vancouver this summer, I went north on Aurora to Everett, then across the bridge, through Marysville, and north on old highway 99 to Mount Vernon. From there you take Chuckanut Drive and you wind up in Bellingham. It is mostly flat the whole way (excluding Aurora and Chuckanut) and is really easy to remember because you only ride on like five streets the whole way. If someone wants I can post a gmaps route.

I've driven this route. Highway-riding can be hairy (65mph cars) but effecient. Harbor Island off the north end of Everett is pretty.

Thanks for the route advise! How were Aurora and Everett traffic-wise? I think I've got a route set up, but new information is always welcome.

Seriously, we'd better not leave too late. It gets dark a little after five now? I really don't want to ride Chuckanut in the dark and I want to save enough time for drinking. I think shooting for 6am is a good idea, and no later than 7am.
I think the last time I rode with a group it took damn near 11 hours. 7am + 11hrs = 6pm. Also, it's a 7:40pm train back down south.

i just thought of something!
my dad lives in lakes stevens, less than a mile off the centennial trail which we will be riding to arlington.
i could call him and ask him if he'll be around and if we could pit stop in the house for lunch or pee or whatever.
either that or i might try to drag his ass out of the house and make him ride to arlington with us.

Aurora kinda sucked. It is sort of a big hill and it is a big rode. I was riding it at like 6 in the morning, so it wasn't too bad yet. Also, I rode in the bus lane which made it less stressful. If you know a better (flatter, less traffic) way of getting to Everett, I'd suggest you do that. Everett was pretty easy. I missed my turn off, so I had to loop back a little bit, but the traffic wasn't too bad.
Old Highway 99 was actually really nice. It was a two lane road most of the way, the cars weren't going too fast, and it was pretty empty. Since the route is fairly close to the highway, most folks just ride on the freeway. I'll whip up a Gmaps soon.
Also, I'm not yet 21 (soon, soon!), so I don't want to ride up to Bellingham and then not be able to drink beer (and I'm lazy).
OK, let's meet at the 22-hour Starbucks at 6am. Please let me know if you're coming or not. Post here, PM me, or call 425-531-0153.
If you tell me you're coming, we'll wait around for a while, but I think we should try to get out of there by 6:15am. Don't mean to be such a fucking drill sergeant, but I don't wanna bike in the dark and have no time to drink.
Also, I'm packing tools, tubes, patches, and a pump. I'll also have spare Snicker bars.

At least from here to Lynnwood, you'd notice less traffic if you took a street like Meridian: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=667503 . Then again, it's got some hills, and I'm sure it'd be prettier to go through Snohomish and take the Centennial Trail, even if it isn't the shortest route. Who wants to stay in an urban area during a bike tour?
It's longer, but it almost never puts you in traffic or near I-5. It's nice to be out in the sticks when you're touring, no?

I'm an old friend of MaLora's and a current 'hamster so I would just like to take this opportunity to quell a few rumours.
First the bad news: Yes, Stuarts, Casa Que Pasa, the 3b, and the Factory have all closed down. Furthermore, I've heard that Lafeen's is changing ownership. For those of you who are familiar with the best doughnuts in the world, this is very sad news.
On the bright side, Bandito's is alive and well and the Biker's Burrito is as good as ever. Also, as far as I know, the Horseshoe has not changed hands and the Ranch Room still has the cheapest, stiffest drinks in town.
And perhaps the greatest addition to bellingham in the last few years: Super Mario's TACO TRUCK!!! The best Pork Burrito in the world for $3.50!
In an aside, MaLora, I was joking about having that calendar delivered by bicycle, I suppose pint for whomever lugs it up here would be in order. Hell, I'm getting paid today; I'll buy the first round for anyone who makes the trek up here.
Have a good ride, and I look forward to meeting those of you whom I have not yet met (most of you) and as I would like to make the run south (downhill?) sometime, let me know how the route is.
I'm currently in Bellingham, heading up to Vancouver, BC. I'll be back in town Sunday night, and most likely taking the train back (possibly taking the train straight from BC).
