Todd has ponied up the cash for a lock.
Paul tried to give me $ on Thursday. Give your money to either myself or Gregg IN AN ENVELOPE WITH YOUR NAME PHONE NUMBER AND ADDRESS!

$38 for the Kryptonite Evolution Mini U-lock 3"x5.5" w/bracket

and just for the record, I will be making copies of all the keys so I can steal your bike!

I'll have a check for the next ride, or I might swing by ABR tomorrow if I find myself riding that way.

Has anyone ever heard of a bike being stolen (or had one) when it was locked with a Kryptonite?

**Yes**

There are evolutions popped regularly on the UW campus.

Last quarter my friends Kryptonite fahghettaboutit(sp?) New York lock was cut in the afternoon (2pm) in a populated courtyard. He was away from his bike for 50 minutes.

I am thinking that I want to get a cisa padlock:

with 14mm abus chain

squire makes a 16mm chain that is round and looks promising. the lock seems wanky though.

The guys down at Washington chain and cable have a theft prevention chain that they have a hard time cutting with their hydraulic press that they think would hold up. They can't cut it with any portable cutting tool other than an angle grinder. It's alot less that the $21 a foot for the abus chain. Buy it direct from a chain company and it is like $3 a foot. A decent security padlock like the Cisa is $60 or so.

I have also heard of Kryptonites heaviest non-hexagonal chain getting cut with some 5' bolt cutters on campus. the hexagonal chains seem to be a little harder to cut.

Eventually I am going to take my On guard down to WC&C and have a cut off using their hydraulic press to see if it fares better or worse than their 14mm theft prevention chain. I'll post and tell ya if the on guard chains stack up to the generic theft prevention chain.

Inevitably, someone with a battery powered angle grinder can rip through anything in 2 minutes or less with a cutting wheel. My guess is 35 seconds with a high quality wheel.

However, I still like the evolution, and I use one to compliment my chain and for primary use in low risk areas.

funniest thing! i found my bike on wednesday parked in front of fedexkinkos on capitol hill. called up the police as i was told to do so if ever found...they took forever...obviously wasn't much of a concern of theirs....

anyhow i was strung out and thinking very slowly from not sleeping the night before so it took me way to long to figure to just snap the damn lock myself!

Langston, i have a feeling the blue peugeout you spotted at golden gardens with a crappy cable/combo lock was my bike .... ...anyhow yay for me, i have two bikes now!
