They are at it again!

www.rideofsilence.org/main.php

From my inbox (the squids are organizing....):

"Not yet started working on it. Are you or anyone else on this email distribution interested in helping again this year? I am thinking that we should shoot for a 6 p.m. or 630 p.m. instead of 7 to start this year. That gives us at least 2 full hours of daylight. In addition, I think we should switch the direction of this route to make it go counterclockwise to UW first and avoid Fremont Bridge until it ends. I think we should consider a slightly faster pace (say 15 mph)."

I emailed them and told them maybe fast is not wise. I suggested that silence is not fun. How about the Ride of Awareness. The ROS ride says it will not be silent, but I am not sure if that is a metaphor or literal. I think a mass CM style parade would be more effective or a single file or 2-abreast line would be more effective. Anything but the racing groups we had last year.

Here is the self appointed leader's email.

I was invited last year, but didnt go. so i dont have experince with this ride. but here is my 2 cents.

silence... YEAH RIGHT! I dont no to many quiet cyclists. I agree with aaron, it should be an awareness ride, not a ride of silence. in my lil' bike world cycling is all about having FUN.

my biggest complaint about this last year was that it didn't really do what it was supposed to do- most people had no idea wtf the whole thing was about. there is no group visibility or even oddity to silent cyclists from inside a car.

i think it'd be a much better idea to do something visual, like wearing all white or something along those lines. the silence stuff is just silly.

Pete, that is why I love sleeping with you!

YES! For fuck's sake, cars (and even pedestrians) can't tell we were being silent.

I think we need to ask ourselves, is this ride for the riders or for the spectators. I think it is for the spectators. The people that SEE the ride and immediatly get the message. THAT, my friends is why they need a parade permit and media coverage.
