What the heck is the ballard street scramble? I have never heard of that.

Street Scrambles are a lot like alleycats, except you have a time limit, and you have to visit as many of the checkpoints as you can before the time's up.

Originally, they started out as an urban orienteering competition called the Seattle Night and Day Challenge (16 hours: 4pm-8am), and you had to do it on foot. But the couple who put them on kept expanding to other formats; I do Street Scrambles (3 hours) with my 6-year old on a Trail-A-Bike. [I also do Night and Day (7 hour option), but not with my kid; that'd be keeping him up way past his bedtime.]

First Street Scramble this year is in the University District, April 29 (well, assuming you don't want to go to the Bay Area). See

Last year I did the Puyallup Street Scramble in the morning, drove home, then did one of those uphill sprint races. I got rather tired. Anyway, looks like I'll be doing something similar on July 7. I'm just an idiot about climbing hills.

I talked to the woman who runs and organizes all the Street Scrambles for the 24hr race. Her and her husband run it, and it sounds like a ton of fun. Megan and I are going to doing the next one, if anyone wants to team up

I don't think she and Eric (the other half of the company that puts them on) are married, but I'm not that close to them. Anyway, nice people, as are a lot of the regulars who help out (generally, a subset of the Cascade Orienteering Club).

I should also say that, if you're biking, these events seem to be the most fun with 1 or 2 person teams. Unless you're amazingly incompetent and get lost in the city, you aren't going to go more than 10mph, so most of the challenge is in navigating, which generally isn't a team effort. However, if you're not looking to score high, you can just pick out the checkpoints that look the most interesting and visit those. They're very good at finding strange, amazing places and things you didn't know about.

I did the route yesterday. It's about 25 miles, and the climbs aren't so bad. It took me 2.5 hours, and I wasn't really trying all that hard. There are a few sketchy descents.

Generally, a quick rider could finish in less than two hours. Many riders will finish somewhere between 2 to 2.5. The rest will finish is about 3 hours.

Anybody not racing want to help me out with a couple of checkpoints? I had a few helpers have something else come up that day.

My rockin' 4th place route.

Quick summary: earlier in the day, at the Ballard Street Scramble, I had to stop on most of the uphills to wipe the sweat out of my eyes, clean my glasses, etc. I also drank down two water bottles.

But Mike got the weather to cooperate on his race, as the sun went behind a cloud as I was ascending Pine, and I didn't have any similar problems.

I was at best 10th going into the first checkpoint, but through a mixture of tricky route planning and luck I managed to climb up to 4th, a finish worth nothing at all. The climb up Magnolia to Ella Bailey Park was basically just a reversal of a descent I made during the Street Scramble.

When I saw Mike recommended crossing the Fremont Bridge to get to the finish line, I decided my only hope for making up ground was to cross the Ballard Bridge instead and take the more direct (and way more steep) route east up Phinney Ridge. This moved me from 6th to 4th place, as I passed a couple of riders waiting at the zoo light. Did I mention 4th place was worth nothing at all?

Anyway, thanks Mike for a fun ride.

Here is my 2nd place route

I had a lot of fun on the route and logged 2188 ft of climbing! Going up Fremont avenue was insane after all that climbing and sprinting.

Thanks to everyone for helping out at the checkpoints. As for the people who were taking pictures at checkpoints, could you post them up here or somewhere online? Thanks.

And next race I'll place before you Peter.

Yes. Of course you will, Evan. But, when you're reading the directions, just remember that he means Queen Anne Drive, *not* Queen Anne Avenue.

Here's my (approximate) 1st place route. Striking differences between the routes include the amount of extra curricular climbing done on the way over to Beacon. And routes through Magnolia seem quite varied. Not much else, though, except insane speed and the occasional nut punch, in order to keep things motivating.

i'm curious as to how everyone made it across hwy99. i basically stopped traffic, nearly caused an accident and got screamed at by drivers as i sprinted across.

I actually considered jutting across traffic, but decided to take the underpass, instead. Evan apparently skipped over Aurora early, took 5th Ave to Taylor (I believe), and rode that all the way up.[/url]

Alright! It was my first checkpoint race and it was gnar gnar! I didn't get DFL by about 2 seconds! Ow!

Thanks to everyone for coming out. It was nice to see a race that was pretty evenly matched, with people coming in to the checkpoints in different order every time. I had a blast; I only with The Chup was serving beer.
