mark your calendars bitches. we'll be catching the 9:35 ferry, so meet up at 830 am under the viaduct near alaskan and washington. we'll head over to the ferry at 9 ish.. so get there as close to 830 as you can so i can do registration and all that jive. pirate race bibs will be provided.
7 bucks to race. we'll all pay our own way onto the ferry, ferry fee is 7 bucks and change (free return trip. we'll have CASH prizes for mens and womens (percentage of entry fees after chili expenses), as well as booze prizes .. and we're getting the ball rolling on lots of BIKE SCHWAG. chili feed is also included in this. we'll do our best to have meaty and veggie chilis at the end with everything (bread, bowls, etc)..
This is the second annual FHR. for those that dont know what's going on, it's a HUGE ride put on by Cascade bicycle club with over 5000 riders. They just happen to use our race day and our course, but we dont let that bother us. We aren't safety nazis around here, but helmets are encouraged, it's a huge group ride and you never know who's going to run into you. Be careful out there.
Cascade Chilly Hilly info here:
http://www.cascade.org/EandR/chilly/index.cfm
It's a fantastic fun ride, last year DanielFeatherhead made a story that is still a favorite among us, he finished the race with half a set of handlebars after they snapped on the first hill, and came in SECOND riding like this. Denny also lost his favorite patch of hair during this ride by sinking his bike wheel a foot into a dock. major fun!
EVERYONE is encouraged to ride, if you aren't in it to win, it's just fun to get out there and have a long ride. We're doing our best to get a fuckload of prizes for everyone, and hell, we'll have a giant chili feed at the end.
More details and prize info will be posted here as it's available.
prizes so far include: Box on the way from Planet bike, Surly sending a mixture of stuff as well, MTB bars and belt buckles from Bontrager, Recyled materials from local bag maker Alchemy Bags, Chrome is sending a misc box, Bike Jerseys.com is sending 1 (maybe more) custom .83 jerseys, Libery Bar 25 dollar gift certificates, Victrola Coffee free coffee cards, Pedros lubricants and misc items, .83 Bike Calendars, and more coming.

i also need someone to wait at the finish line and warm up the chili (we'll have a trailer and everything you'll need).. and mark down the winners as they come in
if anyone wants to come hang out, but doesnt want to ride and would be into being the checkpoint for the end of the line, get in touch with me.
we'll probably have the finish line in the same place as last year, but in order to make the confusion less on where it is, ill print out maps for everyone. it's down by the docks a little bit out of town, last year half the people got lost:)

I have surgery fifteen days before the race, so if I'm not up to racing I'll be the lame-ass finish-line bitch. But probably, knowing me, I'll race against doctor's orders. At this point, I intend to ride, but I may need to be more realistic come race day.
Let me know closer to the 25th if you still don't have anyone else and we'll see.

I cracked my goddamn frame!!!
If I can get it replaced before the race, the trike from hell will be there, tunes and all...iPod owners, bring yer shiny metal boxes.
If not, i'll grovel at Aarons feet for some loaner two wheeler (yes, fuckers, I can ride a NORMAL bike)...or maybe i'll hit up Trask at Revolution.

If I'm not able to ride you can borrow my geared bianchi in my avatar pick. the frame fits me (33 inch inseam) so i don't anticipate it would be too small for you. If you don't have anything better by then, let me know, and we'll see if I'm going to race or not.

if you're going to ride helmetless, try your best to get in the paper. cascade likes it when you do that.

Chris Nygaard and myself have been shopping this around at a few companies around the web to get a pile of prizes. Planet Bike just jumped onboard, they are sending a big box of items for prizes, really nice of them. they also linked us up on their events page
I've got a phone call lined up with Velocity as well, they sounded positive and I will know more later today
and more being added ROCK.

will there be prizes for things other than being fast around the track? y'know like fattest person to complete the race or "most likely to quit and call a cab"?

hi jess, yeah let me know, i really want to ride this, so anyone that is willing to be the finish line person (or a couple people) would help out tremendously. people at the finish line will just need to tow a trailer from the ferry to the end point (half a mile away or so) and warm up the chili and watch the stuff and wait for everyone to come in.
i havent officially asked yet, but lee, can we use your trailer? :)
henry, we're trying to make it as prize-o-rific as the brew and bruised race was, where most everyone will get something. we'll be creative on prize categories too.

So what's the finish line area like? I'm wondering if I can hang out there with my two kids, or if I'd just have to spend my whole time worrying that they'd fall into the water. Also, if there are bathrooms and a place to wait that's protected from the elements. Not that it might rain or anything.

Its the land-end of a public dock, at the end of a closed-to-cars street. There is a coffee shop or somethign right as you come into it, and the trails run along the waterfront for a good ways. I wouldn't leave young children unattended, they'er either going to fall in the water or get all muddy.
It's not protected from the elements are the nearerst bathroom is the retail shop.

The mud, at least, isn't a problem. My 6-year old's school has a dirt depression that doubles as a mud pit this time of year, and they just pass out trowels and ask us to supply a change of clothes.

By car or bike? I may be interested in a half day adventure rather than a full day Pt Townsend trip this weekend. No promises, but I am checking with an uncle about some land behind his place on the island.

Hey ITO,
With all these MB prizes we are going to have those ChillyHilly riders pirating our ride. They are going to see the coolness of our prizes, beer, and chili and wonder why that aren't part of our group. Luckily, this club's only real rule is that everyone is welcome. (I think, although I didn't actually get a copy of the handbook when I turned in my TOS).

i actually invited them over on the chilly hilly thread on the cascade forums. if they show up at the start with either a chilly hilly registration or a fhr registration, and legitimately get a placing, i see no reason to deny them a prize?
also, yes yes to using my trailer, and i also would be interested in an 11am-ish ride out to around the island if such is happening on saturday.

Seriously, I have a hard time calling meeting at 11:30 a Saturday 'morning' ride, besides if we meet at WLC at 11:30 we will be catching the 12:20pm boat to Bainbridge.
There are boats at 10:35am and 11:25 am, I would much rather we caught one of those and I think we should meet at the ferry dock downtown just to make one less stop. I might have to try me some of that Starbucks beating coffee too.

on second thought, the 1125 ferry wouldn't be so bad if we met at the ferry terminal. the advantage is that we don't have to wait around for folks who don't make it and potentially miss the boat.

im ok with anytime, just trying to pander to all political interests :)
and Bontrager just donated some MTB bars, and some belt buckles, ill be adding them in a few minutes to the list above

so long as this router doesn't choke on the code upgrade and IPv6 stuff I can make the ferry terminal by 11:30. if I'm not there just split without me and I will have all day alone to plot my revenge...
oh and I scored some non-bike prizes from Liberty and Victrolla.

Hey, Langston, give the left over prizes from the 24hr Race to the FHR.
If you need more just hit up ol' ABR. However, I would like to see many, many, many more folks do our race. Getting a bunch of prizes just for ourselves is dishonest. The sponsors want exposure, eh?! The 24hr race was fun but few folks did it (maybe because it was 24 fucking hours, or maybe because we didn't promote it enough).
Derrick, print up some flyers! We can pass out a couple hundred at Critical Mass the friday before. Eveyone post it on myspace, etc, etc.

Pedros just talked to me, they are thrilled and are going to send over some new lubricants that they are developing and are hoping to get some feedback on whoever ends up getting some use out of it, along with a misc box of other items.
