I need some recommendations for content manager/database driven web software. Our office is trying to nurse itself off pure html web site development and we don't have a web specialist in sight so I'm trying to do the research. Some other people around us are using Plone or Dreamweaver/PHP. How are these? Anything else? It would have to be pretty idiot proof as we don't have said web specialist to manage it and a few of us idiots would be setting it up.

We use CMS Made Simple for a lot of our clients. If you can make a simple static HTML page it's just a small step to learn a little bit of SMARTY and make CMSMS really sing for you. We like it better than Drupal/etc because the backend is really friendly to non-technical people.

it depends on what kind of functionality you're going to need. there are roughly 937474819386869 different web-based CMSs available, ranging from the cost of free to numbers of dollars measuring 6 or 7 digits.

• how many users will the system need to support?
• do you need different levels of access (i.e.: administrator who can do everything vs. some users who can only change certain portions of content)?
• do you just need to be able to edit text, or will there be other forms of media (images, video, sound files, etc.) involved?
• what technologies does your web server support (PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, ASP, etc.)?

www.opensourcecms.com lists a whole stack of open-source content management systems available for little or no cost, and even provides demos of all of them to give you a feel for how they operate. keep in mind that since they're all open source, they're also very customisable.

also, don't listen to anything henry says. the man has trouble remembering to put pants on in the morning some days, he obviously can't be trusted.

i, however, am at your disposal.

This is why I'm a poor person to make a decision

Like how many people will see the sites? Um, 10?

Yes we need a few admins and a few not-to-trusteds

It isn't set up yet, but will likely be PHP and mySQL

So far I have 2 other offices say they use open source. This being the gov't, there is no standard for me to follow.
