I am told that there was a very serious car-bicycle collision Friday evening near Bastyr in Kenmore. I probably won't know more before I see you tomorrow at the FHR.
Stay Safe(ish) and watch those motorists!

PS My Sweatheart is staying home, so I'll be on the ugly green tallbike.

That's my 'hood. There was a helicopter circling for a while that evening, but I thought it looked further down the hill. Scary.

I was trying to find some info on the news but couldn't find anything. Any update, is the person ok? I ride Juantia Drive every day on my way home to the top of the hill.

My GF goes to Bastyr. Apparently the bicyclist was a student there and the outcome for her was not good. She's apparently brain dead and will be removed from life support as soon as her family oks it. There wasn't any other information about the circumstances of the accident.
Bummed,
Joe

The collision was at NE 153rd and Juanita.
I expect her friends will have a ride this friday evening. I will post details here once it is decided.

I rode that intersection just a couple hours ago (it's where I turn to go home). That's really sad - I found no reports on any news channels/newspapers.

Fucking car drivers! SLOW THE FUCK DOWN! Life doesn't have to be in such a hurry!
My observation of humanity, working in a bike shop:
Customers that drive to my shop are impatient and have places to go, in a hurry.
Those that ride are calm, patient and don't mind sitting on the couch until I have a chance to help them.
That is how my wife, Gypsie got hit. The driver was in such a hurry to get home with his son after dropping his son's friend off from soccer practice.
Sad thing is, since it was probably an "accident" the driver will get away with just a traffic violation and a fine, or perhaps nothing.
The guy that hit Gypsie would have gotten away with about a $200 fine if he had fled the scene. He is only in jail because he fled not because he did not yield and ran her over.

I live up on the top of 155th and ride there all the time. I was thinking about it my whole ride up Juanita drive yesterday. What's the deal with no news coverage of this?

Oh god...this woman devoted her life to helping people and this is all the recognition she gets?
Fuck, the goddamn news is so focused on bullshit (i.e; Bratney Spores hair) that the vacancy of real news could actually HELP SAVE LIVES.

Maybe one day before we're all dust, we'll get a fair shake and some respect.
Any word on a memorial ride?

I've been working on a memorial ride with friends. Is it time for a fresh thread?
Memorial ride Friday, March 2, 5:30 PM. Mass up at QFC, 14130 Juanita Dr NE, Bothell, 98011.
Leave at Six, ride to Bastyr/St Edwards Park and pick up anyone who wants to start there, then on to the crash site. I think Molly has a short loop ride planned from there, and I figure groups can take off to whatever watering hole suits their fancy.
Suggestions, improvements and variations are welcome, but I want to pin down the essentials soon. I imagine lots of riders will be heading up from Seattle.

If anyone is planning on riding up that way from the Green lake/Phinney area(or thereabouts), I'd love to ride with. While I am pretty sure I could figure it out, my newness to Seattle leaves me somewhat unsure as to the best way to get out there on my bike. I'd like to join in, so I'm going to see if I can get off a bit early on Friday.

I doubt I can make the ride, but there's basically only one rational way to get there from North Seattle: get on the Burke Gilman Trail, head NE. Juanita Drive intersects the trail as 68th Ave NE up in Lake Forest Park. This is the intersection where the trail goes under the road. It's easiest just to get off the trail at Tracy Owen Park, follow 175th to the first light (68th Ave NE), then turn right. After the golf course, get ready for a hill climb. The QFC is basically at the top of the hill.

I stay on the trail all the way to Juanita; where it goes under the road (Juanaita), I just stay up, right a right on Juanita and get ready to climb.

Check that; it's 68th that's the right turn; I guess it turns into Juanita farther up.
