I want to loop Mercer Island on Saturday mid-morning.
Meet up 11am at Lenin in Fremont.
We'll loop it and take a break at the end in the park, so bring some sammiches or we can stop at that fantastic bbq place on the way by Starbucks and pick up some.
See you there!
- Molly

these days all the busses are re-routed over the 99 bridge to avoide the fremont bridge construction.
Oh how Fremont has changed! Remember when the Red Door was where Pete's Coffee is and it was a biker bar called the Fremont Tavern with Harleys parked out front in a row. At closing time they would all go across the street and up the stairs to drink coffee, sober up and hang out at the all night AA meeting and they called themselves the Freemonsters?
I wish I could ride around MI with you, but I have to sit on a sailboat and race around Blakely Rock. Sailing makes me fat!

Sounds like the early '90s. Better watch it, or they'll stick you in .83 silver.

It was in the early '80's.
Fremont Tavern/Red Door
When the bottom dropped out of the housing industry in the late 60's, the Fremont Tavern epitomized "Funky Fremont", attracting blue collar workers, `hippies', students, and artists.
Because of affordable studio spaces, art activity blossomed in the 70's. The top floor of the Fremont Tavern housed 14 rooms of painting, sculpture and photography in the 70's and early 80's.
The nature of the tavern changed as well. Gone was the old sign that read "Booths for Ladies", as until the 60's it was illegal to serve a woman at the bar. The best in blues could be heard from the likes of Issac Scott, David Brewer, and Duffy Bishop. Thursday night was "Peanut Night"--- forever a nightmare for the janitorial staff.
In 1986 suspected drug activity forced the closure of the Fremont Tavern. It was sold and reopened the following year as the Red Door. A remodelled kitchen and new menu were added, and with them came a new clientele from the burgeoning computer industry. The upstairs art studios morphed into offices.
Certifiably Silver.

Post Fremont Tavern, Pre-Moving it down the block, The Red Door was the first bar I ever went in. I was 19, a sophmore in college and the Fremont Assoc had hired the tuba section of the HMB to play their Octoberfest. The bouncer tried to card the lot of us, but the OWNER of Hales pushed us through and poo-poo'd the bouncer. Then bought us pitchers!

I'll do it if the weather is nice, otherwise I'll just go to the gym.
And I, too, think we should meet somewhere other than Fremont. Not just because Fremont is lame, but because we're heading southeast of downtown, so why would we meet up that far northwest? I mean, no complaints on riding, but waking up even earlier on a Saturday just to backtrack?!
Maybe someplace more central to both the I-90 location and all folks, like Westlake? Let me know if you kids are into swinging by Westlake to pick up us anti-fremonters on the way...

Not that I'm doing this ride, but why don't you just say meet at Fremont at whatever a.m., or at the west mouth of the I-90 bike tunnel at whatever:45 a.m.? In other words, have two meet-up points, be somewhat on time, and publish a cell phone # in case someone is tardy.

I've never been on one of your rides yet. Tue, and Thur night rides have never worked out for me due to work, and living on the Eastside.
I know nobody that rides a bike so I'm always riding solo. I've thought about doing some Cascade rides but I'm not quite in their demographic, and I own no yellow. You guy's seem like a bit more my style.
So... can I ride? Or is it a members only type of thing?
If so, I'll be riding from Kirkland, the top of Finn Hill. Meeting somewhere off the I-90 trail would be ideal for me. I've yet to even ride to the I-90 trail. I assume I would ride through DT Kirkland then up through Hellvue somehow and end up at the trail?
I'll look tonight, but is there a map showing how to get through Bellevue to the trail? Or just some street names to turn at would do.
Oh yeah, what's the pace like? I'm coming off a Oblique Fibular Fracture, no pain just slightly slower than usual. Don't want to slow anybody down.

You've got the general idea. For specifics, look on the web for the 'Lake Washington Loop' route. For example:
This version (there are other ways to do it) conveniently goes in the direction you want, and even mentions where to turn off to get onto Mercer Island.
In the long run, get a King County Bike Map --- at a bike shop is where I usually find them, but last year, I biked over to the Cascade office in Magnuson Park and picked up a bunch of bike maps, including ones for Bellevue, Redmond, and Pierce County. I believe the Bicycle Alliance of Washington also has a collection of maps to pick up, but I don't know where their office is.
One more thing: If you're at the top of Finn Hill, it might be easier conceptually to meet up at Fremont. Go north on Juanita to the Burke Gilman Trail, then follow it west and south to downtown Fremont. Probably a longer route, but as you can see, the directions are much easier to follow.

Coming from downtown Kirkland, I'd use this route:
All times are GMT - 8 Hours
The time now is Sat Aug 12, 2023 8:37 am
