Also, the "Towards Carfree Cities" conference will be hosted in Portland in 2008.

you know, it's a good thing Portland has no economy to speak of, because I like riding in Seattle with y'all and all that. Otherwise... Portland sure seems to know what I'm looking for in a city and civic mindset, and seem to like rubbing my nose in it.

resulting in less resistance to making infra structure that caters to more than just single occupant vehicles but is pedestrian, bicycle, transit friendly?

I'm really glad they vary the venue for this event. I'll be excited to go down and see this next year.

It would be nice to live in an area that is forward-thinking enough to support bicycling yet still have a local business core that is large enough to support it's own population, or *gasp* bring in new people. I swear, every third person I meet from Portland under 40 either works retail/service industry or is unemployed. The other two are students/kids (even the 36yo kind) and Intel employees.

Seattle, to it's credit, does a fantastic job on the whole but it'd be nice to have options to explore.
