So let's start a new thread already! This topic begins with Derrick's posting of a letter written by a member of Cascade and sent to (at least) one of our sponsors, namely bikejerseys.com.
I want to know what people really think. Is pirating the CH really "classless and rude?" Did I get mixed up with the wrong group of kids here?

i'm classless and rude, but it has nothing to do with pirating some fucking ride.

Well done Margaret. I guess the rest of us are just too lazy to start a new thread.
So, I just had a convo with a pseudo squid that I go to school with and whom rode the CH under the Kascade flag. He is what I would call a recreational cyclist and he had some strong opinions about the FHR. His point is that the perception is that we are "stealing" and that perception are reality. He has a point, but I am not sure how to answer it. I rode FHR (1) to hang out with you guys, eat chili, and drink beer, (2) bring to the attention of other riders in Seattle that diversity on bikes is a good thing. So without suddenly creating bylaws, officers, and a mission statement how do explain to others what we are about? Any thoughts/suggestion would be appreciated.

you might want to make sure you've read the relevant conversation over on the cascade forums.
i think that if you did go out there to try to mooch off of cascade, take their food, try to score a free ferry ride, or otherwise abuse the things they're paying for that's definitely classless.
if you're out there to ride around the bainbridge loop taking in the sight of the chilly hilly and participating in the fhr with your friends, i wouldn't describe it as the most amazing thing you could do, but i don't think that it's "stealing from a charity" or some horrible thing to do.

obviously it was classless and rude.
We're relatively classless and often rude. Dunno about you, but some of the funniest books, movies, people, and etc that I know of are both classless and rude.
The thing that I think the members of .83 have in common is our ability to relax and not worry about something like this. Seems cascade's members do not all have that mindset. So I suggest we (and they) make use of that skill to relax and enjoy something that isn't exactly what was "supposed" to happen. Variety is the spice...

Mr. Bikenerd had two objections: pirating CH, and overly aggressive racing by FHR riders.
The former can (and is/was) being debated over in Cascade's forums. I think it's a lot like voting for the Green Party instead of the Democrats (assuming you don't like the GOP): the effects are not as clear cut as some would have you believe. As a simple example, I never really considered riding the Chilly Hilly: ferry rides (take too long), early season (weather sucks), inexperienced riders on steep hills (accidents waiting to happen). But I would consider doing FHR, because it seems like fun. Plus, if I did FHR, I would pay for CH, 'cause I'm a Cascade member and somewhat of a fuddy-duddy myself. So, in effect, the existence of FHR, in my case, makes it more likely that Cascade gets some extra dough.
As for Bikenerd's second point, I don't think people should perform overly aggressive racing maneuvers that might endanger others, particularly on a ride involving novice or rusty riders (and bikes) during wet conditions on steep hills. Hopefully this is not a controversial position. Since I didn't ride, I have no way of knowing what these maneuvers were, or whether they indeed took place, but I think future FHR's should include a 'be nice to the newbies' message before the start, to make it clear that having a good time is more important than winning a race.

what's wrong with me. i can't even bring myself to fight on the internet today.

Perhaps we need to sponsor a safety meeting with some of the more uptight Cascaders.

Bikenerd denies even belonging to Cascade; he certainly isn't on the board or anything like that.
I don't remember any of the people with any semblance of Cascade authority complaining about the safety aspects of the FHR (judging from the messages in their forums only). I heard secondhand comments relayed from Lee and Mississippi that might have had something to do with safety, but which I took to be more on the order of 'you damn kids get out of my yard'.

and all that shit about the FHR and booing sponsors... that's some wack shit from a guy who, frankly, doesn't know what he's talking about. Aside from Erik's (county-sent, erik-paid) ambulance ride I don't think we use any resources provided by Cascade. I didn't even stop the bike this year, let alone eat their food, drink their water or use their shitters. I'm not paying a cover just to support a bicycle club that I don't ride with, and in many ways fundamentally disagree with
wow! I didnt realize what a load of snobby haters Cascade really was. Lets see here; we paid for our way across, used zero of their resources and rode on Public transportation and public roads. So exactly HOW the fuck is that that such a rude gesture? Just 'cause we got on the boat first? Bitches!
I suggest next year we ride the FHR opposite of their route...just to REALLY by pirates!
Classless and rude? hell, thats why I love this group! Saftey meetings, dumpster diving, drunkin rides in the wee hours of the morning. Screw Kaskade and the 'leet shit they rode in on.
WE organized the FHR...they're jealous all they got were gay assed jersys and WE had Pirate flags (which I will fly proudly just to emphasize how much COOLER we are).
Now that the line in the sand has been drawn, how about we seriously consider the RFL (really fucking long) ride about exactly the same time and route as the STP ? maybe a flag with a horse would be appropriate?
Anyone?

We're planning to do the STP in two days (as medical volunteers for Cascade - Red jerseys, First aid Kit, Call 1-1-9 if someone crashes and needs a ride to the hospital, you know).
I'd love to ride with you kids and fly the pirate flag if you do the two-day thing. I don't know that we're interested in a one-day, but we could probably keep up for the first 100 or 130 miles if you go STP in one. We usually stop in Kelso for the night.
Keep in mind that most Cascade members just like to ride their bike with a gang. (sound familiar?) The haters are a small, small minority that get their knickers twisted easily. Everyone else loves to see people on bikes having fun, especially if pirate flags or tallbikes are involved.

Here's something entertaining: I received a scornful letter from the organizers of the Chilly Hilly (or whatever it's called) last week concerning your unwelcome inclusion in their race.
They are a tad pissy with me for sponsoring the race that you were in. It turns out that the organizers and apparently families on tricycles really do not appreciate your involvement.
Funny stuff. I'll have to dig up that letter and show it to you.

I bet Cascade loves it when people send businesses that sponsor bicycle events nasty letters claiming to be organizers of Cascade events when they're not.

I did that once during critical mass in the seattle center, and really freaked a lot of people out. If Mr. Bikenerd is worried about our "tactics" now, just imagine if we crazies rode it backwards...
And to "REALLY be pirates", we'd have to be stealing some nice bikes on the way. :)

Hey Kids,
As a Cascade member - and someone who will eventually have time to come and do a ride or three with ya'll - please remember that Cascade is a big club.
There are a few pinheads to be sure, but most members are out there to have fun just like you are. Feeding trolls on the board, or even paying attention to them, is neither fun nor constructive. One of these days, I'll learn to follow my own advice and ignore JJ as well...
Besides, you're all missing the main reason to skip CH/FHR - it's in the bloody middle of ski season!

Personally I was planning on doing it in 2 days...fuck Kaskade...I just wanna ride.
I'm not savy on planning bike outtings like some of you are (cough-Derrick-cough) but I recall seeing a few other folks chatting about training for this.
So what do ya say motherbitches? Is Pointdateythree going to make another organized appearance and piriate ride the STP...I mean RFL!

true, but i think the whole thing that really fired us up was the fact that this guy when out of his way to make our club (what the hell are we?) look bad to potential and past sponsors. that's crossing the line.

No argument on that count. The world is full of asshats. I'm just sayin' that bitching back and forth at each other over silly crap - and it has happened on *both* sides - isn't much fun - we're all cyclists. Arguing with some folks is like pissing into a good stiff wind....
I don't recall if I read it in this thread or not (too bloody lazy to check) but there are lots of regular cycle commuters in cascade and posting to their board. The fact that they are a prime sponsor of bike to work month should say something. I've been a regular transportation cyclist for more than 20 years - despite the fact that I'm a fat sot just now.
Having read, and been very entertained by, many of your posts for some time, I suspect that I'd love hanging/riding with most of you, and will when I can dredge up some spare time, but y'all ain't got no monopoly on riding bikes as regular transportation :-)
come on - pony up some love....

So how exactly does .83 define "pirating" a ride? Certainly not a bunch of yahoos getting together and just PERCHANCE being on the same route as a sponsored event...
I would assume "pirating" = "stealing booty", as pirates are wont to do, i.e. eating the food at the end of the ride and such.
