i think i've seen this video going around for like 2 years now. the original version (or at least what i saw) was a much higher quality mpg and started out with two dudes talking. "we're gonna have a good race today, dude!" "word up to my son!" it was also an uncut recording of the entire trip.
i don't know why people have re-edited it and changed the soundtrack so much, but does anyone else still have the original floating around? because the soundtrack on this one is pretty much intolerable.

Here is the original, "Drag Race NYC" and a bunch of other ones. This is the guy who made them.

what gets me about the brunell videos is that they're low res enough that you don't see how truly fucked the pavement in new york often is. i went to visit a friend living there about 4 months ago and was initially going to pack my bike up at the airport and ride it from laguardia to the west village. i ended up not doing this mostly on account of poor planning on my part (didn't want to end up lost without a plan like ito), but it turned out to be maybe a good thing as the roads, especially in lower manhattan, are laden with ginormous sinkholes that would have folded my wheels like nobody's business. streets in seattle are gloriously maintained compared to manhattan.
most of the commuter bikes i saw around there were mountain bikes, and i know why. most of the commuters i saw around there were chinese dudes, and i don't know why.

See, being from the East Coast, I've tried to explain this to people. I always get scoffing looks of disbelief in return.

Recent immigrants at a guess? That's the reason you see a lot of Latinos on bikes around here and in other places I've lived. Strictly economic.
