I wonder if the ambulance/hearse is pedal powered too. Man, I can't believe they built that, let alone anyone rides it.
I remember like 15 years ago the pacific science center had a display with a bike on circular track what was about 2 inches wide, it had a cantilever underneath to keep the rider up as thy pedaled around the ~10ft diameter track. I remember I didn't trust physics would hold true, even with a net underneath
this thing, thanks google

Oh man i LOVED that thing. It was way cooler outside over the water than when they had it inside.

i remember that thing at the science center! the big problem with it was that the massive weight they had hanging down there to keep it on the track was so heavy, my little friend mel got stuck half-way out.
i wonder if the reason for the really narrow bars on it were so that you couldn't lean far enough out to lever yourself off?

Isn't the bike still at PSC? I remember going there and a little girl freaked out in the middle and totally froze. Nothing like a kid in hysterics for a good laugh.

"Why not modify this into some manner of public transport...somehow? I don't exactly know how that would work, but the whole thing looks rather like an elevated train."
This person is a genius: bikes on tracks ("track bikes" has a nice ring to it), will be the wave of the future, and the solution to our transportation problems! If only I had thought of it myself.

Yep, it's still there, outside over the water. Only runs on busy rain-free days though.

omg! i was thinking when i saw this how it looks like way more fun than a monorail or a viaduct or a tunnel. just enclose the little things so people don't bitch during the winter. and have ones to accomidate people without bikes and ones that are like a trainer for people to hook in their bikes if they are bike riders and need to get somewhere cool. . . like over downtown during rushhour or something
hah. but i bet people would pee in them. that's just the way public transportation works. and bums couldn't sleep in them, so we can't get rid of busses.

Back in '89 when I worked at Montlake Bicycle Shop, I also volunteered on weekends at the PacSci Center. Since I was mechanical, my job was to fix anything bicycle related. I fixed the high rail bike, the bicycle robot and the watt generator bikes. It is amazing what abuse the public puts on things! I remember kids getting stuck on the high rail bike. The volunteer had to walk out on the safety net and push the weight around! I even overhauled the high rail bike in my stand at Montlake. I also custom drilled new rims for the thing. We had to grease the rims on the rail too.
PacSci is always looking for volunteers if any of you young kids want to volunteer. The job is pretty fun and you get in for free. Plus you get to do cool things like feed snakes, run the planetarium or get into Lazer Zepplin for free. Oh, did I mention the cool tunnels (Jace!) under the place or the access to the machine shop I had?
