stay home & warm, and accomplish just as much by banging your head against the densest material you can find. Those nice dark wood support beams in your apartment should do fine.
Maybe write a letter to your senator while you're at it. Public Protests = Naivety. This is still (supposedly) a democratic system that works by process and representation, not angry fist shaking.

I see your point about protests not being incredibly effectual, but it's not something you do INSTEAD of writing your senator and voting. Angry fist shaking feels good sometimes. Critical Mass doesn't get tons of people to ride bikes or make the city more bike-friendly, but it sure feels good to take over the streets once a month.
I went out today, mainly to ditch work. A couple things I don't like about marching:
1) You have no real control over the main message of the crowd. I don't really agree with "Bring the troops home now", which was the most common chant and sign slogan. Also, some people had a sign that read "9/11 was an inside job", which really lends the crowd an air of stupidity. It makes anti-war people look like nutty conspiracy theorists.
2) I don't like shouting things in unison with a crowd of people. It makes me feel weird.

of course, i ride in critical mass because it's actually fun, not because i think it's a particularly effective message platform. i'm sure there are plenty of protesters who feel that way about rallies.

i agree wholeheartedly.
why is it the idiots always have the proverbial megaphone?
best sign was the dude silently carrying the giant portrait of gandhi.

Protests in this country are ineffectual because most protesters are a bunch of weak-spined liberals who have sold out to the idea that direct action protest (i.e., civil disobedience, disregard for distance rules, etc.) is counterproductive hooliganism. The authorities, for their part, have reinforced this idea very well by misdirecting such action through clashes with police (as if they had anything to do with what the people are protesting).
The truth is, if we didn't play along, they wouldn't let us protest in the first place. Government-vetted protest is not protest. The anti-war movement has already lost.

I fucking hate political discussions, but allow me to make an ass of myself (something I'm really good at).
There is only one way to stop this war. Impliment the draft. The second middle class kids start showing up in body bags is the second middle class parents get off their asses and change the political direction of this country.

One other nice step would be a war tax. i.e. Rather than plunder the budget and fuck up our country with the cost of the war against zOMGTerrah!1!, directly tax the population. This allows all the stupid bastards who like to put the "Support the troops" magnets on their car to have a real measurable way to say they're supporting the war. With their pocket books.
I think you'd get whiplash from the U-turn all the pro-war asshats would make once it looks like they'd have to directly cough up cash rather than bankrupting their children.
The estate tax was originally created as a war tax. During WWII income taxes were raised (the highest bracket was in the 70th percentile if I recall correctly).

The draft is a stupid idea. They don't want to be there (because if they did, they wouldn't hang around waiting to get drafted). Draftees are harder to lead in combat because they just want to save their precious little asses. They are also the little fuckers most likely to frag you.
A good portion of the American public has no business being in the military anyway. I get sick every time I hear one of those little cheesedick pogues crying on TV saying "I just joined the military for college, I never wanted to go to combat." You should've joined the Coast Guard motherfucker.
If a person wants to join the military but thinks killing is wrong, the medical corps is a valid option. Pacifist medics have a long and honorable record.
If you think it's just poor kids in the military, you are dead ass wrong. Your statement sounds so fucking elitist it makes me want to puke.
Finally, the rich and politically connected will always find a way to weasel their way out. The so-called cultural and intellectual fucking elite place no value on military service.
I've taken an oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. I want you fuckers out there fucking naked, screaming and making a huge ruckus.
Exercising your rights and demanding that you are heard validates the sacrifice of everyone ever killed in combat.

I was going to make a bunch of comments about fucking all your moms, but then I read Sean's post. I am naked now. God Damn it, I was on a train to PDX to make the world a better place thru Bakfiets (www.clevercycles.com) when the march started. I really wanted to run naked.
Seriously, sometimes I want to run out in the street naked and yell, "WHAT THE FUCK!" literally!
Anyway in this land of hippycrites in their Subaru SUVs it is nice to see so many bikes.

A-fucking men to all that. Well put Sean.
The draft is shitty, but starting that dialogue seems to be the only way to wake up a large portion of our country that's busy "supporting the troops" by sporting yellow ribbons on their car that were made in FUCKING CHINA.

Lots of bumper sticker patriotism.
However, I've seen things getting way better between now and when I signed my first enlistment contract in 1987. I think Desert Storm was the tipping point.
I think the people protesting have been heard. We have a healthy balance in Washington D.C. again and things are starting to see public debate that haven't in a long time.
