So yee haw, everybody. Of those who plan on going for the Friday, 4/13 opening night. Don't be like me last year and not plan any housing. I hardwood-floor surfed at a random bike-guy's attic loft. We're livejournal friends now, and he likes Roller Derby. Anyways. Lesson: Get a hostel, or something, before you leave town.

Megan and I (will be staying somewhere, yet to be determined) are going to riding the train down with our bikes. I did this last year with Justin & Amanda, and it was a great time. Plan on bringing booze. If like last year it will probably be raining in Portland when we get there, we'll need all the liquid heroism we can muster for the ride across town.

Amtrak is offering a deal to get a free ticket for a friend if you go to Portland. Use promotion code H656. I booked tickets for both of us for $60 round trip, leaving Friday coming home 8:30am Sunday. It would be nice to take the earlier train, and get there before 9pm, but work precludes that.

Anyone else want to go?

i think bigshot jury-member caroline and i are going down on the earlier train to make the first showing. she's seen all the films that they're accepting (and some they didn't) and says it's going to be a kickass program.

langston, did you remember to get bike accomodations? there's a finite number per train, so make sure you get those with your train reservations as well.

another option might be the biodiesel passenger shuttle provided by sharedroute.org. they apparently have space for 4 bicycles and offer a $50 round trip to portland. haulin' colin just used them last weekend, so you know they're hippies, but it's probably better than the normal greyhound. or you could put together your own caravan like last year.

last year some of us stayed at the portland central motel 6, it's pretty close to the clinton street theater in se portland. i think it was $60 for four of us in a room for friday night.

if ya'll can't make it down on friday (or don't get in, this thing sells out!), this year they are also having three shows on saturday and two more on sunday. they will be less rowdy (i.e. fun) though.

whatever the case, even though the midnight mystery ride site has gotten useless lately, i think they're still planning a ride leaving from the clinton st. theater at midnight on friday. missing that should be considered non-optional! last year we took a keg out onto the esplanade and things got a little crazy, despite the fact that we were all soaked to the bones.

portland is a freaking fun city to ride in, it's basically flat and a big grid - unlike seattle you can just kind of meander zig-zagging from one end of town to the other without worrying that you're going to climb hills for hours.

For those that don't know, Langston gets LOUD when he drinks. It's quite likely old ladies and children within ear shot will be offended, but don't worry you can drink away their stares.

Anyways, We’ll probably see some of you kids down there Friday night.

Hmmm. Travel Portland's website says these are blackout dates for the Big Deal (which is what H656 is), but I think that's an error; the real blackout dates are over Easter weekend. Guess when my family's going down to PDX?

If you take the train, be sure you don't book northbound passage on the Coast Starlight, which supposedly leaves Portland for Seattle at around 4pm, but is invariably 2 or more hours late.

Jen, (spouse), Mimi (kid), and I are going. We're gonna take the train and bring the tandem and another bike. Will probably try to hit the early show Friday; see you there if I see you.
Looks like fun!

Jess (spouse) and I have two seats and two bike racks booked for Seattle -> PDX on Saturday the 14th (leaving SEA @ 11:20) and returning Sunday the 15th (leaving PDX @ 14:50). I'd be fun to be there for the opening night but busting our asses to get out of Seattle on Friday would be unfun. If anyone plans to be there Saturday night/Sunday morning drop me a message.

Is this part of your training for STP? To ride from Seattle to Portland? Genius!

Sure, only we'd probably ride it in more than one day this time around. I happen to think it's pretty genius, thank you.

Although it turns out we'll probably be touring the peninsula instead that weekend.

i've confirmed with ayleen that there will be a midnight mystery ride leaving from the theater at midnight. one caveat is that there is no longer a beer stop between the ride start and the destination, so make sure you get some beer before you rendezvous.

we should also consider doing hangover breakfast, there are a number of great breakfast places in town.

if you're trying to track me down in pdx you can always text/call me: 206.227.8449.

any kind of roll call of who else is going to be there? i know andre and evilmike are currently looking for carpool options.

Likewise here. I'm on the fence about going down or not, mostly on account of a questionable housing situation in portland, but I do want to go down for the MMR.

We're booked on the train, and staying at the Travelodge on 900 Burnside. We're taking the train down on Friday night, catching the MMR & a hangover Breakfast adn then the 5:00pm showing of the films. For dinner we're meeting up with a friend from college and going home on the 8:45am train Sunday morning

See all you people talking about not being able to get down for Friday are just silly. Do like me and quit your job. Last day for me is Thursday, waking up Friday, and hopping on the train with the lady Brooke, and the dude James. I'm pumped on a good time, but am adamant about not making a repeat of the magnitude of drunkardness any of you may have witnessed last year.

Hope to see you all there.

Michael

Lee, I warmed up the Horse Brass for you. Man those fries are icky! Good beer however. No wait, excellent beer! Nice wait staff, but odd to see people smoking in a bar. We got it good in Washington!

BTW, Todd of Clever Cycles lives about 4 blocks from the HB.

who has a trunk mount bike rack that holds 4 bikes that we can borrow to head down to PDX for FBB, Aaron? BtAH?

PJ Diddy and myself are looking into renting a car, Evil Mike and Pete are you guys interested? Otherwise we'll have room for 2 more.

Plan is to leave Friday 4/13 around noon or 1, Travel time was long last time and we cut it close, BtAH missed the showing because of it. We will be coming back mid-day/afternoon on saturday. We are also thinking of a repeat stay at the travel lodge.

If they're not game, I'm still trying to figure out how to get down there and would be interested in splitting a rental. Since everybody's going on Friday, it take it the MMR is Friday night and hangover brunch on Saturday?

I might be able to round up a 2-bike trunk rack, too. With some trunk space and some creativity, that might be enough...

i'm into this. i think i can provide a car, i just don't have a rack. not sure if the tabs are expired or not.

the trunk is pretty big, though, and one bike can fit inside for sure.

I've acquired a ride to Portland. I'll be staying with friendlies, but I am more than willing to have a travel lodge after-hours party when the bars close.

OK, our car is still penciled in as full including pete, we just swapped out evil mike for mikeOD though.

not sure about the after hours party at the travelodge we pretty much just crashed when we got back. But we didn't go home cause the bars closed, just cause the keg ran out under the bridge.

The travel lodge after-party will be full effect. Include a liquor budget.

So this would probably conflict with our Hangover Brunch, but who knows, maybe we can catch up with 'em;

Portland, OR

April 14, 2007 10:00AM to 01:00PM
Event Description:
The Community Exchange Cycle Touring Club and Bike School will lead off the day of events with a bicycle ride starting at Peoples Co-op in SE Portland at 10:00 am and ending at the BIG RALLY downtown Portland. Saturday's ride will visit Peoples Food Co-op, a passive solar residence in Northeast Portland, the Ecotrust Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center and the Step It Up rally at Terry Schrunk Plaza. The Community Exchange Cycle Touring Club and Bike School will be leading a bike tour to promote low or zero carbon solutions as part of our mission to promote peace and ecological respect, said Aaron Tarfman, volunteer leader of the ride on Saturday. The event is part of the Step it Up 2007 campaign which will culminate at a rally downtown from 1:00-3:00 pm. The idea behind the Step It Up bike ride was to visit locations that showcase sustainable ideas in Portland from residential to commercial. The Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center is gathering place for good ideas, explains Jen Marlow, Communications Associate at Ecotrust. Step It Up 2007 is one of those good ideas, and Ecotrust is thrilled to be a stop on the campaign toward better climate health.

The shitty alarm clock didn't work at our hotel room this morning. We woke up at 7:55, in time to throw everything together and haul ass to the train station without breakfast to catch our 8:45 train. I called Amtrak when we woke up, but all the trains for the day were totally sold out.

Saturday, after going straight the hotel from the train and skipping the MMR, we met up with a large chunk of y'alls out on Hawthorne for breakfast, rode to two bike shops and then peeled off to go to Powell's. There we ran into James/ChampagneJam in line for coffee, petted vellum bound 400yo books and got some reading material. We caught the 5:00 showing where there were about 100 people. Great films, a few I had seen, a few hack-job picks and some really good new ones. The theater staff I talked to were blown away, they have never had 100 people for a matinée before. We rolled back to the Travelodge with Richard (I forget his handle) and his wife, in beautiful warm sunshine.

Dinner was with a friend from college, we went to a nice bistro called "Mothers". It was nice to get a decent meal including wine and dessert for three for under $100. Afterward dinner we went a really cool (non smoking!) underground lounge/bar with tons of imported beers. There was good electronica playing to the Matrix cartoon. We were back in the hotel by 1:30 am.

Great time, nice to see everyone. Paul & Pete, they were only selling the dvds on opening night, I'll give you both your cash back when I see you again.

Portland was drier than last year in two ways, one way making it more fun and the other perhaps less?

I won me a hat, Miles took home the flask and holder, Brandon the plates.

My gear still smells like smoke from the Motel 6

PDX kids can't keep their pants on, maybe cause they use their belts to whip each other.

"Ain't no party like a Zoobomb party..."

Bonfire under the Freeway, check, why is dry wood so easy to find there?

Pete screams like a girl when he falls off the bed in the morning and likes to play Hot Hotel Room, I lost, MikeOD solved the Global Warming.

Jam filled me with a tasty breakfast that lasted me all day Saturday.

Horse Brass serves a tasty Cherry Porte(u)r

I tripped over Bike Shops the whole time but never found a BOA on the trip.

Someone else get a big rig with a bike rack so I don't have to drive again next year.

man point83 made out like bandits at the raffle too. brandon, i have your plateware sitting at my house. i'm guessing the best thing i could do with it is take it down to miles and adam's, aka grand central station for the north end bike posse?

if you guys kept your tickets, go digging around for them and see if you won the electra amsterdam.
