My friend Kela had her bike stolen from her apartment complex. Unlikely that this a crack-head theft, so if you see something like this on cl/in shops/ &c., let me know.
56-57cm tan frame
chrome lugs & dropouts
brooks professional (w/ the copper rivets) saddle
red leather toestraps
black deep-v rear wheel + iro/formula fixed hub
brown cloth bartape
thanks:

A. post a pic if you can. I really try to keep my eyes open for stolen bikes.
B. I think it should be a .83 (and any bike club) "policy" that along with the photo people report:
1) the make and model of the lock
2) Location
3) rack type
4) time
5) how it was defeated if you have forensic information.
We have a sizable group, it should be used to collect data on what the current trend is in lock defeating. I'll even host a "defeated lock FAQ on my site if Derrick wouldn't want to do it here. The one website I saw online that talks about it was a joke.
Next to running over a cat, stealing a bike is perhaps the evilest thing you can do on this planet. Some sort of unified resistance should mount against these people. Not the least of which would be to start offering rewards for the ear of... er... for information leading to a conviction of a bike thief.

Seconded. I only feel so bad for people who use only cable locks, or leave their nice bike around campuses, Broadway and other high-prowl areas. When I was younger, in school and spending more time on the Hill, I rode a cheaper bike that I could leave out and not get f'd with. And cable locks? I've not used one of those since 4th grade, the last time I had a bike stolen.

I have seen bikes with only one number or even just an "X", but that still counts. It is what the cops need to prove the bike is yours.
