What's the easiest way up cap hill from the west side? Specifically, I'm coming from Dexter & Mercer and going to 16th & Jefferson.

Seconded. I tried Olive once. I tried Denny once. I tried combining Denny and Olive. I ride up Pike if I have any choice, even if it means going downtown just to go back up the hill.

You could also ride up Eastlake and then go up 10th from the U-district side; That hillclimb is not too bad, and you can always stop at the Roanoke for some beer halfway there.

Pike.

Specifically, south on Dexter across Denny, turns into 7th (which you can take, or jog down to 5th for better lights), left on Pike. Slog up to either 12th or 14th, right on either to Jefferson, left to 16th.

Actually, I guess Olive might be slightly easier, since it has a little bend that stretches the hill out. But Pike has more bikers and is more direct.

Olive is steeper and longer than Pike. Broadway is higher when Olive intersects than when Pike intersects.

I'd probably do this

or this
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=830452

depends on what your elevation/distance tradeoff value is

I usually go up Denny, but with a Death Cruiser and a busted foot I have to be a little more picky. I tried James today - big mistake.

I think the 10th hill is actually worse. Not appreciably less steep, a lot longer, and way out of the way if you're going to Providence.

My wife and I always thought the Interlaken route was the 'easy' way up Capitol Hill. But that is horribly, ridiculously out of the way. A better 'easy' alternate would be up Jackson to 12th, but if you're starting at Dexter and Mercer, there's no reason to pass by Pike to go to Jackson.

The worst routes are James or Yesler, but I see Eric(?) has already found that out.

Well, it is way out of the way, and it is long, but I do like stopping for beer.

Anyways, you could also go up Jackson, but Pike is the superior way.

I think if you really wanted to stop for beer, you could do that on Pike, too.

God I love 12th. It's like getting on top of the hill for free! I wish there was an equivalent of 12th for coming from the North end. 10th/Harvard pisses me off, and Interlaken does too. Guess I'm just a whiney little bitch.

Denny is not only a steep fucking hill, but the road is sketchy to ride on, and the sidewalk usually has a lot of peds on it.

Thank Jesus for Pike.

minimal hills

9th south to Pine. hop on the side walk in front of the Paramount, after Boren you get a lane. take Pine up to 12th or so then cut south again before the next hill. there is a bit of a valley you should be able to roll down to Jefferson, left 4 blocks.

stop by Waid's for a drink on your way.

It used to be Pine but with that stupid contruction it's closed down to a one-way until you get to Boren these days, so Pike is the answer.

I also like weaving up from Marion, Madison and over there if I'm coming from the southwest, but that takes you up a little higher than broadway by the first baptist church. Works if you're pedalling to my house, but wait! You are! Tomorrow!
