Meh, it's okay I guess.
I'd rather see a bit of effort and cash expended on improving shitty drivers.
1) Make the written test harder
2) Emphasize driving safely around cyclists in the manual and test
3) Mandatory written test every 2.5 years
4) Mandatory on-road retest for license every five years
5) Bigger fines for driving-while-being-a-dick offense [1].
I'll feel a little safer when it seems like you have to do a little more than fog a mirror to obtain and keep a automobile license.
[1] Reckless driving, Driving on a suspended license, Driving while talking on the cellphone, etc.

srsly.
I remember when my dad/aunt decided their dad was no longer fit to drive (it was looooong overdue). It was a BITCH for them to find a legal way to get his license taken away.
If an old person's family begging to the city/state isn't enough to take a person off the road what would it take to get incompetent drivers off the road?

When are you anarchists going to learn? It's EVERY red-blooded American's right to drive a big-ass car. Especially the elderly. They didn't liberate Europe so they could ride public transit! If we weren't all meant to drive EVERYWHERE, why are there so many drive-through businesses? Cars are good for America. We made that descision 50 years ago and we're sticking to it. Don't fuck with the American people!

Our auto-centric society considers the operation of a motor vehicle a right rather than a priviledge when in fact the opposite is true. Until this concept is repeatedly challenged and eventually re-evaluated and changes to the laws regarding the process of obtaining and keeping the priviledge of operating a motor vehicle occur cycling will not become safer.
Facilities do not equal safer cycling.
Safe drivers make the shared use of our roads safe for cycling.
The primary function of facilities is to keep cyclists out of the way of motorists.
Facilities will encourage more people to cycle because they will believe that they are safe.
More people cycling will be more people challenging the priviledge of motorists to operate vehicles while recklessly endangering pedestrians, cyclists and themselves.
Unfortunately the cost in human suffering and loss of life is very high.
Annually in the USA there are ~43,000 traffic related deaths, ~5500 pedestrian deaths and ~800 cyclist deaths. Since our society seemingly considers these numbers to be acceptable what impetus is there for more stringent laws that will make our roads safe for all users?

At least we have a mayor who wants more bikes.
The unfortunate truth of government as you can never hope to have tax dollars spent in the correct way... you can only hope to have them spent in your direction.
