waaay cooler than shopping cart races. Sign me up!
When I was a teen in Mukilteo we had soapbox derby races as part of "Mukilteo Days". They discontinued them due to insurance risks when I was about 17. It was tons of fun to watch, they ran down a steep 6 block strip which my house was adjacent to. (down Loveland, from 6th to 1st, crossing Mukilteo Blvd)

This was also at the end of the era where you could buy fireworks in the stand operated by the Boys & Girls Club in the gas station parking lot.
