You let Langston borrow your expensive bike. Genius.
If you want it back i'd check Craigslist and local pawnshops.
It's safe and clean, in my back room. I've been stalling on returning it because I'm a big weenie about having to walk back home.

er... we should probably negotiate something where i buy the Raleigh off you. I had some lady in a car slam on her brakes yesterday at 5th & Westlake, and I rearended her thanks to the shitty brakes. The frame sustained some damage and never again will I ride a Raleigh.

negative. It was prohibitively cold out on my lunch break. I wasn't stoned when I crashed, either.

Langston I think you need to seriously buy my solid steel schwinn, with steel rims, solid one piece cranks since it might last you longer than a month. Do you have your bike death list up to date.
And Ben, maybe it would be better for the Slayer if YOU walked over and then rode it back.

But isn't the Boxcar along the way? He might never make it to Langston's house.

Hey! The Technium lasted 5 months! I rode my red Raleigh for nearly a year until the frame died.
moving to full-time bicycle commuting in ~2001:
Trek 5600 Hybrid: Both thumb shifters, two wheel sets, crank arm, chain, one set of fenders
Raleigh Racing USA (the red one): seat post, saddle, three rear wheels, two front, one rear derailleur, one front derailleur, one derailleur hanger, broken frame, bottom bracket, crank set, badly bent handlebars, one set of fenders, down-tube shifter
Raleigh Technium: chain stay, seat post, one set of fenders. This bike was totally rebuilt with a used Ultegra drive train before riding, never had mechanical difficulties.
Raleigh R700: two (removable/replaceable) derailleur hangers, one FSA wheelset (used)
Raleigh Record: front headtube ie torqued frame.

125 for a fully working road bike isnt unfair at all. it was a few years old yes, but everything worked, it was all there. it has done it's long share of training rides. i wouldnt have hesitated to ride that thing 50 miles (done it before!).
im not upset over it at all, it really was just an extra bike that i used to loan out to people or ride when my bikes were in various states of repair, but it was a good bike nonetheless.
it's fair. it got borrowed and broken, so it's only right to make good on that. if it hadn't been his fault, i would have told him to just give me that price, and keep anything on top of it that he made from an insurance claim (which might have been a few bucks for replacement value).
and we can always make fun of langston far into the future because he totalled another bike :)

it was all there, but i wouldn't say it all worked. that rear hub was pretty much thrashed, i had to give it some emergency maintenance down in portland. but that's neither here nor there.
on the other hand, i also can't believe that he got in a wreck with it. what're the odds?

At one point in time this would have been an accurate statement and a fair price.
Looking past the head tube and it's 10deg less rake, the bottom bracket shell is cracked, the wheel set is very old (original?)in poor condition, and the tires are bald. The drive train is facing imminent failure; I added three chain ring bolts and hand-tightened the rear axle while in PDX. The chain is stretched and the gearing shows signs of wear.
The stomper pedals were also mostly shot, I replaced them with some 105 cages I had laying around. Let me know if you want them back, I repacked them full of grease when I took them off.
The modolo bars and brake levers are nice, I'll say that.
I'll pay you for the bike because that's what I would expect you to do if you wrecked the bike I loaned you, and because we're friends, not because I think the bike was worth $125. Thanks again for letting me borrow it, that was very selfless and considerate.
