Typically, I'm a not an altruistic type girl, however: this involves me eating cupcakes and people getting to ride bikes.
Tomorrow, let's make our first stop on the ride the Ballard Cupcake Royale. Buy one $2 cupcake, and $1 helps to get bikes to Rwanda coffee farmers. Also, all the funds raised will be matched up to $1000. So, it's a good thing for everybody.

Might want to call ahead and warm them to make more cupcakes. Last time I went to the Ballard location they were all out of cupcakes and it was still a few hours before closing. LAME!

You mean we're supposed to ride from RS all the way to ballard? I dunno about that--it sounds like an awfully long way.

Northend thru Edmonds sounds like a good plan Langy!

If there is a lake loop to be done, let's do the south end. I got my fill of BGT for the year on Saturday.
How about bikes for fat Americans? It is odd that Americans can feel good about dumping our garbage on third world countries. Those bikes are nothing but the 70s ten-speed nobody wants. Rwanda is a tiny country in all of Africa. They basically have nothing, so they need everything. They make wooden bikes because they have no quality metal.

How about over to the locks, lap around Magnolia, back across to Ballard, up Golden Gardens, backwards through Blue Ridge, down 8th NW to 77th, 77th back across to Greenlake and down 15th or the Ave to RS.
That should take about two hours, has some good hills and nice scenery.
We could replace Magnolia loop with going a bit farther north through Carkeek park.

Yeah, 'cause when you are fleeing your home into the desert in fear of government-sanctioned genocide there's a good chance you'll pass up the free 70s-era Schwinn because it has downtube shifters.
Perspective Aaron?

I agreed with Aaron about sending garbage bikes to Africa; I've seen pictures of the junk that's put on barges to Ghana, but then I looked at the website and this is apparently a different deal. They say they are making cargo bikes especially for Rwanda. No pictures of them, but if they are like the ubiquitous Phoenix bikes made stronger, I think it would be a good thing.
Not that getting bikes to the burbs wouldn't be good, too.

are you saying "send bikes to rwanda/ghana" or "don't send bikes to rwanda/ghana"?

No kidding. I love how people hopped right in on the debate when there was actually no way to tell what aaron was advocating. ;)

Which leads me to believe he'd make a great politician. The ability to speak out of both sides of your ass goes a long way in the political relm.
Arron, run for mayor please.

I don't think Aaron is making a comment on the "send" vs "don't send" more a comment on our consumption appetite. Often times people will view something "old" like a 70's 10-speed is no longer useful. Maybe someone just bought the latest carbon wonder bike, or they bought the "old" bike as a fad or when they were younger but now have decided that just driving is easier. It would be great if they pumped up the tires and got back on it but when it gathers decades worth of dust in the garage it is effectively junk. For sure, with limited resources the Rwandans will make use of whatever becomes available to them. American "garbage" still has a lot of use in it (hello dumpsters).

It looks like I'm bailing. I dropped headset ball bearings all over my basement, so I don't have an assembled bike.
Clearly I need to own more than 3 bikes. I have 3 bikes that all serve this sort of purpose, and all are in various states of disassembly.
I'll be at CM on Friday.

thank you everyone who came out to Ballard! it was nice of you all (unexpected!) to meet me there, despite my lack of appearance at Red Square.
also, the ride south was lovely, through myrtle-edwards at night is awesome.
it makes me feel all warm inside, thinking of how fun you kids can be.
PS: Ito never done it! never will! spoke cards will be given out on Friday at the race for those who actually DESERVE them. also, they can and will be revoked at any time as necessary.

Andre understands me.
What I was trying to say is lets use our bikes here. Like Alex at 20/20 is doing. He is mining the garbage for used bikes to refurbish and sell. Don't send them off to far away lands using gasoline in the process! I don't think they want a Shwinn Varsity any more than you or I do!
What we could do is teach them / help them make their own bikes. Like www.xaccess.org does. They are a spin off of Xtracycle. I suppose crappy left over American bikes could be used as feed stock, but really any country could easily be set up to make bicycles. The problem with Africa (sub Saharan) is that they really don't have any good metal or parts or even good tools to fix and repair and maintain the bikes we do send them. They need help from the ground up.
Every year 20 million bikes are sold in the USA. Most end up in land fills!

Rad ride everyone. I'm impressed by our ability to rack up and then pay a $260 tab.
And holy shit - for those of you who saw me whip a u-turn and start chasing an SUV in wallingford, those fucks actually *shot* me with a bb gun! I have a welt on my arm and the skin is broken! Unbelievable!
This bike gang is getting way out of control - now I've been the victim of a drive-by shooting...

nothing pisses me off worse than getting hit with something thrown out a car window. it happened on broadway one night. i chased them down and caught them at a light. there was a cop right there but he was busy and didnt see what i was yelling about and the guys managed to get away. so frustrating

not to mention I think there was an extra pizza and a pitcher or two that they served that werent actually ordered (i covered the pie...cause i ate most of it).
Maybe next time we let the waitstaff know we want separate checks. If they cant accommodate, we roll. Granted we're all big boys and girls, and can account for our purchases, but it coulda been easier.
While we were raping the cash machine did they clear our unfinished pitchers???
BASTARDS!
Last night was fun...first twosday ride i've been able to do. Great time had by all. It's good to see new faces on these rides lately...and we all stuck together well.

I mean this respectfully, Molly, but I think you are the only single female in .83 that actually qualifies for this spoke-card. A better version would be "I got drunk on a .83 ride and made out with Ito" spoke-card as they would be abundantly more popular!

Fucking-A, Miles, that's, well, fucked up. I peeled off after we found out you weren't duking it out with those a-holes, so I didn't stick around to learn that they actually assaulted you. I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt. You can put an eye out with those things! Dammit! I wish we had caught up with you in time to show them that that kind of aggression will not stand, man!
I had a similar experience on the eastside once, only the bb gun wasn't loaded. I really find that kind of behavior disturbing--it's borderline sociopathic. Who the hell carries a bb gun in their car, anyways?
