I got hit today by a left turning (into a driveway) civic on Eastlake as I was riding north just before the bridge. Just got back from 4 hours at the ER. I seem to be okay (beat up shoulder, no broken bones). It looks like my bike mostly survived...the front wheel is definately a goner though. I need to look at everything more closely tomorrow.
Time for bed.
Hopefully I'm doing well enough for next weeks CM. Guess I'm not doing Bike to Work day.

I'm okay and the bike came through reasonably well. I need to get the frame and fork alignment checked, but they seem to be okay. The visible damage is a unfixable taco'd front wheel, a major paint chip in the left seatstay, a scraped up shifter, and some scuffing on my saddle. The front wheel appears to have taken the brunt of it.
Eastlake and Hondas sound like a bad combo, watch out rlotz and anyone else who lives there!

I seem to be about the same level of soreness today. All things considered I was very lucky, if I were moving slightly faster I would have been hit in the leg instead of the front wheel.
I too have been hit on Eastlake, by a cab, knocking my rear wheel out of true. That was the second accident of that night, and I wish I were smart enough to make a diagram like yours for the first accident (it was a mess). Trying to explain the conditions of an accident to an insurance company over the phone is a pain.
Yeah, I've done a route like that a few times, and it is a little more scenic, being closer to the water and all, but I just wish people would learn how to fucking drive safely and pay attention. That's all. Is that too much to ask? I'm tired of people trying to gun it through lights, and make maneuvers before fully looking around, just so that they can save a few seconds. Oh, and maybe use their blinkers if they're going to do something unpredictable, which, unfortunately enough seems to be when drivers are most likely to forget. I'm in a ranting mood right now, because every accident I've had with cars is from people not paying attention as they rush around, and I don't want to be forced onto back roads (even if they are nicer) because too many drivers are douche bags in a hurry.

I much prefer Minor to Fairview in the southern half of the route, but I only take it from Roanoke to Newton, and only southbound. It's a habit I picked up when I was in a diet study at the Hutch. Northbound and north of Edgar, I take Eastlake regardless.

I had a fucking cab turn in front of me on Fairview (a few blocks west of Eastlake). You're supposed to go like 10 mph on that road... what the hell was he doing?
I also tried to take over the lane on Eastlake in one of the "tight squeeze" spots, near where it intersects Harvard, and this bitch in an SUV still squeezed past me as I was doing it. I caught up to her at the light, motioned for her to roll down her window, and tried very hard to explain without swear words what she did wrong. She just did not get it. Will use swear words next time.
I've gone that way. It is quite a bit slower and when you are trying to get somewhere (vs just riding around for fun) that is an issue.
I ride Eastlake fairly often (it is the fastest way downtown from my side of North Seattle) and this is the first time that I've had problems. I normally take the lane, but did not in this case because traffic was really bad.

I live just off Eastlake, I take that route occasionally for variety, but personally I feel safer on eastlake than riding though that alley halfway up Edgar/Hamlin. The alley has some steep hills and poor visibility. If you don't want to grind up those hills you need to keep your speed up which (in my opinion) has you going too fast for the sight conditions.
Looking at Alex's map I think the spot he got hit was just north of the flower lady by someone pulling into the parking garage there. I think Eastlake has a double yellow line there, which I believe means a left into the garage would have been an illegal turn.
Eastlake is bad and the bike master plan people know it, they just aren't sure what to do about it yet. I believe one person at the SBAB suggesting adding more planter boxes, personally, I think they need to all be removed.

Yeah, the driver was apologetic and gave me his info and offered to give me a ride home or to the ER or anywhere else. I took him up on that offer.
Hopefully I'll be back and riding by CM next week.
