If you don't want to do a century, you could just hang out in Snohomish and meet us on the way back. Cuts out around 35 miles. Did I mention there is pie in Snohomish? Really good pie?

Curiously, I will be forgoing this option for my dinner tonight. Dunno if I'll go to the Virginia Inn, though. There's a lot of good eatin' between the UW and downtown.

I'm hitting a show at Neumo's with Jessica James later in the night, but I'll be at the Whiskey Bar and Westlake for sure.

On second thought... if we're supposed to be on the ferry dock 20 minutes before the sailing, that gives us 20 minutes to get to the supplies stop, buy supplies, and get to the ferry dock. People better be a lot faster than they usually are.

Stoned at work again?
It's simple math: we leave WLC at 7:30. We're supposed to be at the ferry dock at 7:50. Too much time if we're just going to the dock, but I don't know if we can make an Uwajimaya stop (hell, any stop) and expect to get there on time. Our stops seem to take 20 minutes minimum.

Where the fuck is it? I rode by the thing called the whiskey bar at 2nd and virginia and no bikes in site. So I went to the Virginia Inn and had a beer and read the paper.
Searching for "whiskey bar seattle" on the internets pointed to something else at someplace called FX McRorys, but then my cell phone crapped out before giving me an address.

Home!
NOTE: The Fremont Bridge really is closed when it is pointing straight up in the air.
Thanks for the good ride tonight. Bainbridge was a great idea!

glad everyone made it back safely (as far as i've heard). hope the folks who turned back for earlier ferries had an okay time - pouslbo was definitely not ready for .83 but hopefully they were touched by our visit and our mission - ride bikes, drink beer.
i still want to go over to bainbridge and just drink on the beach at fort ward or fay bainbridge. alas it'll have to be another time.
and next time i'll be smart and bring my hammock. no more crazy sprinty racin' along the highway to catch that ferry, no sirree.

Ha ha! I found one more baggie of cookies in my messenger bag when I got home.
Mexican-Spiced Chocolate No-Bake Cookies
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup cocoa (I used a blend of regular and Dutch-processed)
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 pinches cayenne (or to taste)
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1/2 cup butter
3 cups organic rolled oats
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
In a 2-quart, heavy bottomed pot, add the sugar, cocoa, salt, cinnamon, cayenne, milk, and butter. Bring this to a boil for three minutes, stirring constantly, and then remove the pot from the heat. Add the vanilla and then the oats, combining well.
Let the mixture cool just until it is slightly thicker and then form clumps according to your preference onto parchment paper or foil. My batch made about 15 cookies.
Let them cool for about two hours and then store them in plastic bags and take them on bike rides to share.

A friend of mine who used to live in Poulsbo told me that the best way to get fireworks there is to hand the guy $50 or so and tell him to give you some cool stuff. You usually end up getting way more than what you pay for, especially if it's late in the day and they guy's intoxicated.

Hey, I got to ride to Kingston solo. Highway 307 sure is dark. Except when the assholes going the other way have their high beams on. Good thing there wasn't any roadkill on the fog line, or I'd be lying in a ditch somewhere on the Kitsap Peninsula. But you know what? In the dark, you hardly notice there's a hill.
Also: I was having a discussion with someone about grocery stores, and there is indeed an Albertson's in Poulsbo after the light, followed by a Central Market on the right. I don't know if either was open, though.

Imagine if that nice island cop would have made all of you lightless cyclists walk your bikes in the dark while the rest of us rode on to the ferry terminal. (Would we have left you? I don't know, but there was a ferry to catch.) It was cool of him to just give a warning. Walking bikes along the dark road seems like it could be much more dangerous than efficiently riding to the destination in the company of people with lights.
Still, please get some

Indeed! Lights are more important than helmets on dark roads. Oh, and get some fresh batteries! Many of you had dim lights at best!

I saw two Bryne riders tonight (the team with "Pro" on their asses) while driving(!) down roosevelt. Not only did they have no reflectors on their fancy race bikes but also no lights. I'm sorry, I don't care how cool you are, if you're going to ride on the road suck it up and get some lights. At least on .83 rides the groups are large and usually more than a few riders w/ lights to make up for those that don't.

lights add way too many precious grams to your fancy carbon/ti racing bike. The idea of being a weight weenie amuses me when guys train on them, they would be better served training on a slightly souped up steel road bike (motobecane, raleigh, etc) for endurance and hill climbing, and then jumping on the 15.1lb bike on race day. Amateurs!
As for lights, remember that if you don't have a headlight and at least a rear reflector AND a helmet you will not have any legs to stand on in court if you get hit after dusk and want to sue the driver.

Back when I raced the thing to do was run reflective tape down the seat stays, most lights were heavy and clunky and not very bright... but the tape it was bright then... with new super reflective tapes it shoulld be hella bitchin bright now...
and if someone complains about that level of weight they should go give themselves the magic finger treatment in the bathroom before they ride, it will save some ounces. Hell, don't even need the magic finger, a good log in the pot weighs more than a mars 2. They just need to drop a log.
humans are stupid, uningenuitive and generally pathetic.
(But Paris loves us anyway...)

3M tape is very bright. The problem with riding in a group and relying on other's lights is when we get spread out. I passed several dark cyclists on the tandem and they passed us going up hill. When the road is totally dark and cars are approaching it is hard to see a dark cyclist you are passing. Lights are just smart.

Yeah, that was 20 years ago when lights weren't bright and they were heaaaavy.
But I am surprised more people don't tape their chainstays, it is an elegant solution to compliment the tail light.
You should carry the 3m ultra reflective stuff that came out last year... I bet you could start a trend. an actual good trend.
As I remember it, you can get it in all colors now...

Good idea. Do you have a source? My suppliers carry basic reflective tape some of it is 3M some does not say. Also, I assume you mean SEATSTAYS. Chainstays would be for low flying heliocopters!

Man, now I have to decide if I keep the super bright L-ion MTB front light, or if I return it to the REI and get my $194 back. $194 for a front headlight, and while it's bright, 200 bucks is a lot of money.
