(Seattle)--Next week SDOT*s contractor plans to close the Fremont Bridge to all motor vehicles during the night according to the following schedule:
Monday 9 p.m. to Tuesday 6 a.m.
Tuesday 9 p.m. to Wednesday 6 a.m.
Wednesday 9 p.m. to Thursday 6 a.m.
Thursday 9 p.m. to Friday 6 a.m.
The contractor plans to close the bridge to pedestrians and bicyclists only between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Tuesday through Friday.

I get how they can close the bridge to pedestrians, but how exactly do they close it to bicyclists and not cars?
Because they're doing electrical upgrades and I bet the conduits run in the leats exposed area that would get damnaged by a car...the ped/bike walkway!

I got stuck on the North side tonight around 9:30pm... WTF? They had a little shuttle going to take people from one side to the other.

so the bridge isn't really closed to all bicyclists, only to those bicyclists who ride on the sidewalk, which isn't probably anyone except my grandma.

most people ride fremont bridge on the sidewalk. fremont, ballard, and montlake the majority of cyclists are usually on the side.

they had some fucking retarded shuttle which went over the ballard bridge instead of aurora. I carefully, and with the help of a seattle bicycle guide map, explined to the limousine service driver how to use aurora to run the shuttle every 5 minutes instead of every 20. So sad.
And he didn't even drive me to the top of the hill on dexter.

as made more clear by Eric's post, the bridge was up & thus closed, all of it, sidewalks, roadway, etc. the shuttle did not travel across the fremont bridge itself, it took another route across the canal.

if you read, the times when it is closed to bikes and pedestrians is a subset of the times when it is closed to cars. so it's never open to just cars...

i forgot about the closures and went to the fremont bridge tonight. the driver was pretty cool and i talked him into going up dexter to 99 and over that way instead of ballard bridge. he dropped me off right at home.
he was from out of town and the only way he knew to get to the other side of fremont bridge was over ballard bridge. he was glad that i showed him the quicker 99 route.
and yeah, they have bike racks on the back of the shuttles. cool little service for bridge closures.

I got stuck on the north side of the bridge tonight and ended up having to go up to the University bridge and up over Cap hill. Where I was lovingly assaulted by some drunks in a car.

fortunately 'bama and i didn't take westlake like originally planned, we took i-5 up from downtown.
Plans now call for closing the bridge to ALL traffic-including bicycles and pedestrians-between 1AM and 6AM Friday morning this week and then again next week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights between 9PM and 6AM the following morning.
These intermittent full closures are an alternative to closing the bridge for an entire weekend, which has been successfully avoided so far...
During these bridge closures Metro bus routes 26, 28, 31 and 74 will revert to the routes used prior to the reopening of the bridge; please refer to http://www.metrokc.gov/ or call 206-553-3000 for route info.
In addition, there will be a free shuttle van service next Tuesday thru Thursday ferrying pedestrians from one end of the bridge to the other between 8:30PM and 2:30AM (via the Aurora or Ballard Bridge).
Detours under North Approach to End
Bicyclists know the Burke-Gilman detour route along 34th Street (between Stone and Phinney) is still in effect. But both the Burke-Gilman trail and the road which crosses under the north bridge approach will reopen mid- to late July, after the work area underneath the north approach is prepared, paved and striped.
Once open, there will be a slight jog in the trail*s route under the bridge until Phase III work on the north side is complete. And until then, delivery trucks will still use the Burke-Gilman trail on rare occasions, during which times the trail will be flagged, and bicycle traffic temporarily delayed.
A Last Bit of Repaving Remains Too...
A few sections of street will be ground down and repaved in the next month, which will require some short-term lane closures and a few late work-nights to finish this last street work.
The grinding will be noisy, but the resulting pavement should be worth it. Two areas will get a new asphalt overlay; from the Center of the Universe Signpost at 35th and Fremont, past the People Waiting statue at the north bridge approach to the Capers parking lot, plus the area just west and south of the Nickerson Street Saloon.
