I just find it odd, that we Americans are so attached to our bikes. In Amsterdam, for example, no one takes their bike inside. They do not consider themselves cyclists. No more than Joe/Mary American considers themselves drivers.
every year about 80,000 bicycles are stolen in amsterdam alone. that's over 15% of all of the bicycles. maybe if they brought them inside they'd walk home less often, and less of them would end up in a canal after getting swiped by drunk students.
it's also illegal in amsterdam to buy a bicycle off the street, and a E200 fine if you're caught doing so.

And it is illegal to drink in WLC, but we still do!
According to my sources: "Warm Showers" Chris from Holland and Ben from 20/20 who lived in Amsterdam for a year. It is super easy to aquire a bike on the cheap. $15 USD. There are 10 year old kids riding around the coffee shops yelling "FIETS!" over and over again. Meaning, come by this bike from me!
Most bikes in Holland are pretty similar and low grade. People just don't care that much about them. It is also odd to note that getting a bike mechanic job is somewhat difficult there. Now I will admit all this is hearsay. I bet I could get a job there!
