So I've seen a bike locked up somewhere (outside) for about two weeks now. It doesn't look like the sort of bike you normally see abandoned.
Green Bertoni road bike
Six speed
Look pedals
Does anyone know if any bikes matching the description have been lost or stolen?
Edit: Location revealed for people with matching addtional details.

have you seen it locked up at all hours of the day/night?
maybe their schedule is really different from yours.

Yup. And it hasn't moved from the exact position it was left in.

sad stuff. hope you find an owner or you score another bike, either way it's win/win.

...except for you? Would you feel better if it was stolen after 2 weeks rather than smashed after 3?
Seriously, people. How did we come to this? The Yeti left in place for a year and Joe's bike are interesting cases of extreme neglect. But a locked bike left for 2-3 weeks being fair game? Come on.

i guess it's where you draw the line is what is the subject here. i know that if i left something chained up not at my house and in front of a church for 3 weeks and i came back and it was gone, i would understand.
take this for example: what if you had some jerk park a car on your lawn (supposing you have one) and left it there. how long until you would call to have it removed??

another good option is to put your own lock on it, with a note. saying that "you think it's abandoned, and you want to give it some new life. if it isnt call me"
if it's really been there for weeks, no one will probably call. your guilt will be less when you decide to liberatize.

I pointed a friend in Spokane to this thread and then we talked about it in email. He had a related experience that I found interesting. Since I'm too lazy to rewrite things I'm just pasting our IM conversation.
<alex> we've talked about this very issue
<alex> (liberating bikes that appear to be abandoned)
<john> yeah
<john> the one i followed up on was a guy who worked graveyard shift
<john> he used it daily
<alex> you were curious about the one in XXX for a long time too
<john> oh yeah
<john> i still am
<john> that one is certainly abandoned
<alex> the graveyard shift one, did it look like it wasn't moving?
<john> no
<john> it was chained to a tree
<john> but the tree was just big enough where it had to be chained exactly one way to fit the chain around
<john> so it looked like it never moved
<alex> ah
<john> and the guard at the adjacent bank said "it never moves -- been there for months"
That's it. Would have sucked for that guys bike to have been stolen, but both john and another guy assumed it was abandoned.

Chalk the wheel!
Should be a pretty simple test. That's what they do at the "park & pay at the box" lots downtown. Those guys have a little device so they don't have to bend over or nothing.

IMO:
If it's locked up, then no matter what it's not fair game, even if it's been there awhile. As a case in point, I had a bike in college that I left locked up for an entire year and a half. When I finally needed it, I moved it.
If it's unlocked, then I think it's a case by case issue. The bike I posted about was in bad shape, not locked up, and left in a strange (albeit not public) place. Frankly, I'm still not sure that it would be okay to take it. However, I wouldn't even consider taking the bike that's the subject of this thread. True, with such a crappy lock, it might be stolen (just ask Marcus how his bike was secured when he found it), but there's really no way of knowing.

That's pretty much been my thought process.
Though, I actually posted hoping someone would know the owner. Does anyone have any ideas of a better way to get the word out? That was the original intent of the thread.

Man, I thought I was in abusive relationships with my bikes...
