This is yet another post asking if it's right to take a bike that isn't yours under certain circumstances. In this case the circumstances be one formerly very nice, now obviously long abused (chain off, tires flat, rust everywhere), unlocked, potentially stolen and abandoned (my guess) trek bike discovered yesterday behind an apartment building near some dumpsters in ballard.
So, if it's still there today, should I take it? I am completely against taking a bike that I think has even the possibility of legitimate ownership. On the other hand, the evidence for it's abandonment/illegitimate possession by somebody is fairly strong.
Any opinions?

How about this: report it to the police as you would report a suitcase full of money. If the police don't care and/or no one claims it, it becomes yours rightfully. Just because some idiot stole my bike and left it to die doesn't mean I wouldn't care about getting it back. That's why I would have filed a report w/ the serial number with the police.
I'm sure I heard a story about something like this in the news recently. Duffle bag full of cash in Colorado that a few kids found. The drug dealer owner never claimed it so the kids got it.

if i found a bag full of money, i wouldnt be reporting that. if a bike looks abandonded, it probably is. could be stolen, yeah, who knows. maybe thrown out?
give it some new life. chances are if it's sitting around in a back alley the original owner probably already replaced it (if it was primary transportation) or it was some seldom used deck bike that no one even noticed was missing.
but understand, im a total asshole, and this is all from an assholes perspective
seriously, where do i find bags of money?
