Thanks. I've been wanting to get a second pair of pedals. And at $30 thats only ~15 more than a set of cleats.

REI, fucking the yellow man for the benefit of the white man for years, and years, but hey, who gives a shit!? My stuff is cheap!

JUST KIDDING!

They do have predatory business practices (but so do all corporations) and encourage people to take plastic out in the wilderness. They pay their employees low wages and encourage part-time (except for corportate). They encourage mindless consumerism, etc. etc. Truly the McDonalds of the outdoor industry. Still, I have a lot of good friends and know several good customers that work there. They all work in Corporate and make really, really good money. Too bad the retail staff isn't treated as well.

I can also list many businesses that sold their goods in REI only to have them dropped and REI knock's off their design in China.

I admit, I do buy from then once in a while, but where else you gonna get a titanium spork (made in Japan) or a useful quick release keychain (thanks Henry)

They seem to me to be "green-washed" but they do encourage people to love the outdoors, even if they do arrive in their Subaru. REI is not alone. Getting stuff made (tens of) thousands of miles away seems to be the norm.

A Love-Hate relationship.

Even the "Green" grocery bag I got at the Farmer's Market was made in China out of Plastic Fabric. It was only $3. Wouldn't it have been better to have the local grandmas sew it and the profits benefit (offset) the cost to the local farmers to bring their goods to market? Things have got to change.

I am glad we all ride bikes.

I think I'll go buy some pedals at RIE, hell, they are less than wholesale!

comparing our wholesale from QBP to the REI sale prices MY GOD local bikes shops are a rip-off!

I know! everyone buy those pedals at the sale price and then take them back for full retail refund!

Seriously, even their "normal price" is barely above our wholesale.

Chaps my ass.....

Sounds like you should start stocking up from REI. I'm pretty sure they're trying to dump a huge surplus of these pedals. They had them similarly on sale a few months ago.

double edged sword...

I buy components where they are cheap and go have work done where the labor is good, regardless of the labor cost.

Occasionally I go and buy from the local bike shop at higher prices, but I try to give you guys money through your work.

I also buy stuff at REI because -stuff- breaks... so why put the small bike shop through the crap deal of having to return stuff. Really, alot of things just break and break.... REI is esigned to have stuff returned... and as much as it is great to repair your borken stuff, I am going to return a jacket to REI before I take it to rainy pass repair and pay $60 to have a new zipper thrown in and seam sealed.

Now... I am wondering if those are the olld crank brothers eggbeaters... I've heard that the earlier models didn't have radius cuts on their axles, hence they snap. Mine haven't yet... but of course when they do, I am not going to have my friend Thomas weld them, I'm taking them back to REI.

It's too bad people are so focused on making stuff light and fragile... I just talked a girl out of carbon for her -first road bike- trying to convince her that she did not need a carbon rear triangle for commuting... as Gregg's had told her she wanted.

componenentry in cycling has gotten even wierder than the drillium era.

But Aaron, I think you should make your shop know as the cheapest place in town to buy campy components... just write off the cost and volume campy stuff out...

and then educate your buyers that they can bring it in and have it rebuilt...

that way you train your cuctomer base to buy rebuildable stuff... and your propagate the campy lines like the centaur... that make for incredible commuting equipment. Basically... farm yourself more maintenance work... and teach people to stear clear of the disposable products.

and of course... assist in the reduction of Japanese componentry that has disgraced the cycling industry.

Fratelli d'Italia
L'Italia s'è desta
Dell'elmo di Scipio
S'è cinta la testa.
Dove'è la Vittoria?.
Le porga la chioma;
Chè schiava di Roma
Iddio la creò.
Stringiamoci a coorte,
Siam pronti alla morte:
Italia chiamò!

Noi siamo da secoli
Calpesti e derisi,
Perchè non siam popolo,
Perchè siam divisi;
Raccolgaci un'unica
Bandiera, un speme;
Di fonderci insieme;
Già l'ora suonò.
Stringiamoci a coorte,
Siam pronti alla morte:
Italia chiamò!

Uniamoci, amiamoci;
L'unione e l'amore
Rivelano ai popoli
Le vie del Signore:
Giuriamo far libero
Il suolo natío;
Uniti per Dio
Chi vincer ci può?.
Stringiamoci a coorte,
Siam pronti alla morte:
Italia chiamò!

Dall'Alpi a Sicilia
Dovunque è Legnano
Ogni uom di Ferruccio:
Ha il cuor e la mano.
I bimbi d'Italia
Si chiamano Balilla:
Il suon d'ogni squilla
I vespri suonò.
Stringiamoci a coorte,
Siam pronti alla morte:
Italia chiamò!

Son giunchi che piegano
Le spade vendute:
Già l'Aquila d'Austria
Le penne ha perdute.
Il sangue d'Italia
E il sangue polacco
Bevè col Cosacco
Ma il cor le bruciò
Stringiamoci a coorte
Siam pronti alla morte:
Italia chiamò!

But hey, to each his own.

I see from your icon that you know the proper way to remove shimano componentry whenever it is encountered!

It gives me great pleasure that you beat the infidel hardware!

yes...

I concur...

apply this technique to all non-italian componenetry!

aaron, you should stop buying stuff from qbp! they import tons of parts from taiwan, and oftentimes have knockoffs made of american-designed components. seriously, you spend way more at quality than all of the rest of us combined spend at rei. oh, and where is your new bleriot frame built?

i like rei, they do good work and of course as a corporation they're out to make money, that's their charter, but they at least understand that it's important to support local forests, trails, and organizations because the popularity and accessibility of the outdoors is tied to theirr bottom line.

I agree, Lee. I try to support J&B and Seattle Bike Supply also, but QBP is pretty much one stop shopping for a bikes shop. All are my first tier suppliers. I have 10 or so second tier suppliers. 'Tis true that most stuff is made in the Orient. I just wish more stuff was made here. Just thoughts, nothing more. The bicycle is truly, a world product.

Technically REI is a co-op and not a corporation. They are supposed to serve their members (which probably includes most of us), not maximize their profits.

I do end up buying stuff there when I can't get it at other outdoor shops (such as Pro Mountain Sports or Second Ascent), but I'm not a big REI fan.

Just make a rule and only sell american and italian components at your shop.

Or... sell american and italian components at the best price in town, and mark the fuck out of stuff from the sweatshops of the east.
and then donate some of your profits to asian workers rights organizations.I heard Oxfam is trying to get some workers organized.

I mean, it is true, you buy cheap stuff and you are treading on the broken backs of the world. That's not the reason I prefer campy... I buy campy because their components are still polished on the laps of italian women... but it is why I try to buy american...

You should do that Aaron... start donating to workers rights orgs... that wwill make you the total hyper socially conscious free marketeer.
