Hey yo all! Unfortunately I have kind of limited free time right now, but need help fixing my bike up. If I had more free time I'd just go to the bike shack or the bikery, but every time they've been working lately I've been busy with work or school. I really would like to get to know how to fix my bike better and my brother, who rides with you guys and many of you know is grand at fixing bikes, but no good at teaching, so I don't want to keep bugging him.

Anyway, I've also been looking for people to ride with, tired of being a lone biker, and was thinking if someone was down, maybe helping me fix my bike up a bit before the Thursday ride, and then biking down to meet up with everyone else?

Hit me up if you feel like helpin a girl out.

FieryIrie@gmail.com. Thank you so very much!

Aden

yeah, a little more specifics and someone will most likely be able to roadside triage to get you rolling out with us. Also, have you tried the repair help on www.sheldonbrown.com or on /www.parktool.com/repair ?

also, who's this brother of yours? Do you have any sort of web identity we can see? (myspace, livejournal, blog, etc)

It really can be awkward meeting new people when you've already had carnal relations with their siblings.

Har! I'd rather not know about the carnal relations I'm sure some of you have had with him... Brandon Martin-Anderson's the bro.
FieryIrie is my myspace name. He's in my top peoples.

I have a friction gear shifter that, brandon told me I need to tighten down and is 'finiky' or something along those lines. It starts to slip gears, I tighten it down, it works for a bit and after not too long it starts to slip gears again. *shrug*
I feel a bit stupid, some of the problems, like the funky sounds my bike has started making sometimes may well be tiny little problems, but I am so crazy busy right now I can't even find time to give it a good look over.
I've been taught how to tighten my brakes, need to do that again, but instead of taking the time to do so have just nearly died a couple times in the last week.
Other than that I'd kinda like to just look over my bike with someone that could point out stuff that seems awry and give me some tips.

I live on Cap Hill. And thanks to all for their replies! So who's down to meet up? Whew! I actually have an amazingly open schedule Thursday... Anyone?

And I am no ones nephew. Heh.

for this little explanation i'll assume they're down tube shifters.
the deal is the compression from the outside bolt on down tube shifters provides the friction needed to hold the cable in place which in turn holds your dérailleurs in a specific gear.
naturally they will want to loosen.
it seems as though they are missing a lock washer.
i suggest finding a thin lock washer or wavy washer that fits between the shifter and the outside bolt, grease the whole damn thing, and tighten it down adequately.

the lock washer will provide an expansion force between the shifter boss and bolt threads that will prevent it from loosening.

that or just locktite the thing with removable threadlocker if you don't really want to take it off any time soon.

Hhmm, this seems to make some sense. Being that I don't know a lot I'm not certain I have the right idea but...
It did 'click' into gear before, but since it started messin up now it just kind of floats between gears, Brandon said I might have just lost that feature and that people have biked perfectly fine without it for years. Yes yes.
Sooo, it makes sense, but I still don't know, really, what to do. I'm dreadfully fearful of taking my bike apart, not knowing how to put it back together and having my baby/transportation be out of commission.

if you're on the hill, your best bet might be to head down and visit alex down at 20/20 cycles. honestly, he'll give you better education than these lunkheads and his shop will be there to help you with parts & advice when you need it further down the road. your bro's shop-partner colin works there as well, so it's all in the family?

someone correct me if im wrong...

sounds like it "used to" index but now frictions?

I don't know if it's been futzed with prior to this change, but could be an easy fix. Are the shifters bar end, down tube or on the bar stem. If none of those make sense, give your best explanation...we'll figure it out. Brakes are easy to adjust with some practice and a good teacher.

Love your bike...it'll love you back!

If you have Thrusday off, come meet the band of idiots at Westlake Center between 7 and 7:30 pm and we/sombody can look it over for you. It's not uncommon for people to be tooled and fixing this and that. Some of us are even "professional" bike mechanics and really may have a clue.

...some of us are just tools...

Here here! I need dozens of men volunteers to show this lady what's wrong and how to fix it! 8^)

Yeah, I was actually hoping to take a bit more one on one chat time about bikes, and in particular my bike than could be done while people are tinkering around before the ride. I want to learn how to bring my bike up to being in good or atleast better condition, rather than just fixing the one problem. I got my bike last september, have been riding it like crazy for about 9 months without much maintenence and it needs some love. I'm doing the STP in a couple weeks and am having a hard time getting some good ride time in with it suddenly needing so much love, and having no time...

The mention of the index turning into a friction. Exactly. That is what seems to have happened. Or at least in junction with some other stuffs.

How about this. I can be anywhere on the hill, downtown area, ewe district etc. any time after three tomorrow for any willing helper!?!

careful what you wish for...ya just might get it ( and still have a bike in need) :P

I'd love to help one on one but not sure when i'll be available...that and i'm no professional mechanic...just a lowly triker with some tools.

Depending on my workload I may be able to find some time to tinker with your bike. IM me and we can take it from there. I'm thinking the U-dist would be a good central location and close to recycled cycles if a random parts are needed.

If that works for you...

I'm not the closest, but I suppose you could come over and I can adjust your bike and talk about it before the ride on Thursday.

I'm @ 6525 4th Ave NE in Greenlake. (go north, left on Ravenna, left on 65th, right on 4th) I work until 5, so I usually get home 15 minutes or so after that.

Oh and to address the other topic of this thread, I'm otherwise engaged at the moment, so you'd have to try the .83 ride for hookups.

Some more details on the bike would help help also.

5/6/7/8 speed?
DT or bar-end shifters?
700c, 27", 650c/b/a wheels?

I can't help you out this week, but if you still need help this weekend, feel free to wander over to my lair house and I can show you my etchings workshop.

I'm a little south of you, right by the I-90 trail. There might be miniature homo sapiens underfoot, depending on when you drop by. But we can throw your bike on the workstand and go over anything that needs doing.

It sounds like the same problem I'm having with my Peugeot. Long story short, there is a slotted plastic washer on the outside of the shifter that keeps the bolt from turning when the shifter does. If this washer allows for any play whatsoever, the bolt will work its way loose. I've tried locktite already but with little success. I'm thinking that reshaping the post or washer with epoxy may be the way to go.

Okay. You guys have all been awesome. I have to run, out of school now, and will probably have the chance to check a computer one more time tonight at the library.
Happy Stick Person, you are really close to me, were you saying you'll be home tonight at 6? Would I just wanna drop by later and ring? Anyone else in the area, it might be nice to meet up tonight if you have time, please, call, drop me a message, whatever. The sooner I can get my baby on the road the better.
206.718.6203. Hopefully will meet you all tomorrow! I'm the redhead, named Aden, with a dirty white Centurion. ;^)

Blessings!

Glad you didn't say stink on shit!

Bees on flowers?

Rubber on the road?

Meth heads on copper wire?

Anyway, sounds like a wrench party is in the works.

Catch is it should be at 20/20 cycle.

someone call Alex and ask. Tell him Aaron said it was his turn.

Oh, and Alex DOES NOT like IPA. He says it stands for I Puke Afterwards!

A wrench party!?! Sounds like fun.

You guys are rad! Happy Stick Person totally came through last night. I showed up at his door and he showed me how to do some stuff. I cleaned her up a bit, he somehow, unbeknownst to us both got the indexer indexing again. Took out my uuuhh, lower bracket, cleaned it out, fixing the funky noise and she rides like new!

So... I look forward to the ride tonight. And I would love to learn more about my bike, bikes etc. as I don't even know what to call most parts...

Awesome, awesome. Let me know about the wrench party. I have much to learn!

Thank you all!

I know it is short notice, but tonight, 7/02/07, would be great. Get the bikes rolling smooth for the 4th and follow on loooong weekend. Anyone else think that Aaron needs a few more 6 packs of IPA and would support an after hours bike wrench party? BTW, I am coming up from Ft. Lewis so I will be running in around 7 if this is a go.
