Thanks everyone for showing up, huge crowd. Total police escort with chopper. That thing is loud, your tax dolars at work! I saw one crash, hope nobody got hurt. Speeking of crashes, if you stop to answer your phone could you please pull over? Also those in front should slow down going downhill to prevent gaps.
Note to SPD, if you're smart enough to read this board you can get your facts straight. The blade pulled last month was done by a PASENGER IN A CAR not a rider. And what's so bad about riding 99?
Oh and I forgot beer.
See you criminals next month!

that was a fun ride, I have to say, even if I bailed early to go drink. The cops were pretty funy, really, totally paranoid. I guess they may have got a complaint or two from the viaduct ride last month.

You are SO not old enough to use the work Tubular, unless, of course, you are refering to tubular rims. There is no such thing as tubular tires. Those are called sew-up.

I thought they were quite mellow, just there to serve and protect. Relevant to that, there was a bare minimum of douchebaggery on this CM as well (for which I was thankful).
Somebody on the ride mentioned fliers which were handed out at WLC by the police, did anybody else see these? I gather that they were meant to inform the CM riders that while the police don't want to shut CM down (or butt heads with it, anyway) they have concerns about public safety when CM takes to 99 (particularly the viaduct).
All that said, I never did actually see any of the supposed fliers.
It was a good CM once we got over the poor start downtown.

escorts, flyers, choppers...damn, I miss ALL the fun.
Anyone get one of those flyers? I'd personally like to know what they say...and I can guess in part as to why.

Goddamn snot nose little punks and their fancy talk about tubular tires. all that rap music is ruining your mind. all tires are tubular 'cuz if'n they weren't, they wouldn't work right. hell, back in my day, we carved our bikes from wood and used sheep intestines for tires. didn't have none of your fancy carbony fiber. what the hell is carbon fiber anyway? sounds like a goddamn laxative made from charcoal. filters the shit smell right out.

Bwaaahaahaa. Fogies. How about radical? Gnarly? Just plain badass...
I kept my flier. The cops were cool. Good for something! And yes, they just wanted to let us know they weren't trying to butt heads but 'please no knife pulling' was the general idea. I heard, and believe it was a passenger in a car that did the knife pulling. We all know the two tons bullet drivers to be the agro ones usually, yah?

so... I was doing a show so I couldn't make it...
but the cops ?? flyered ??? the mass?
That is soooo foooking cool...
in 99.99999999% of the world they would have mowed the mass down with watercannons... or just shut it down... but instead they supported everyone in an unlicensed assembly and did an informational flyering...
Last summer after two sheriffs (rightfully) got roughed up... they escortedus...
this time when we hit the viaduct we got flyered and escorted...
all things considered... as far as the constabulary goes...
even if they do write me tickets all the time...
I really dig SPD...
They should all get bikes and ride with us...
or perhaps we should start giving out invitations directly to SPD members thanking them for their tollerance and urging off duty occifers to come and ride (and drink ) with us...
I would like to see how critical mass would go down in istanbul... I think drivers would really just run the cyclists down... slowly pushing them otu of the way... but the cars would just push in, and then if the cyclist responded, a constable would run up and beat them with one of the 42" batons they use to hit people who fall asleep in public parks.
yeah... we have nice cops... we really should not forget how nice SPD is...

okay, i'm gonna put my cards on the table and take what comes;
last mass when we went onto the viaduct there was this angry rednek from montana screaming and cussing at each and every one of us. i came upon him and in my most polite smartassed voice explained to him if he didnt like bikes to go back to Montana!
his response was to SPIT ON ME!!!
yeah, mouth full of biohazard!
My response to him was to simply ask if Jesus taught how to spit? He made the motion like he was going to run me and every one else in his way over...actually moved his wheels into mass traffic but couldnt continue cause of the cars infront of him. as a defensive measure i pulled a knife and placed it at his front tire and said "I dont think so...".
the maneuver was towards his vehicle, (which with was potentially ready to become a weapon its self) not the driver.
sorry if i put mass riders in a bad light, but at my level his actions were aggressive (duh) and mine were defensive...and the ONLY reason i didnt continue with pushing the blade into the side wall is cause i REALLY DIDNT want CM or its riders to get hurt.
SPD be dammed! if a driver comes at me like hes gonna run me over i'm gonna protect myself in every way i can. we're quite exposed and vulnerable out there.

We've reached critical mass when you can't tell the difference between the assholes on bikes (trikes) from the assholes in cars.
Mission accomplished.

Dumb idea, trevor.
Violence or the threat of violence rarely ever protects, it just escalates. I think your move was on par with the ignorance of the driver, and I'm really quite sad that your stunt set back critical mass as a whole.

No way in hell did Trevor' knife incident have anything to do with the cop presence.
It was the act of riding down the viaduct that brought the cops. I am sure they had quite a few 911 calls as we all rolled down the viaduct. In this American culture, it is a capital offence to prevent anyone from keeping thier foot firmly planted on the gas pedal!
People just get crazy angry unless you are moving down the street/highway as fast as possible. Hell, I have been honked and and swerved at when I was doing the speed limit!
I do not get why car drivers get so angry.
I think the cops were there to encourage us not to take limited access roads AND protect us from aggro drivers. Keep the peace. The police know that CM only disrupts traffic in any one spot for a few minutes. The exception is when we take major arterials without turning. But even then, the back-up only is 10 minutes or so.

I was expecting you to catch the rig and bring it down.
fucking riot.
What woulda been good is if the guy who bumped the cyclist had gotten his car rolled off the viaduct.
THAT would been cool.
ya let us down Trev... you could got the tire, we coulda grabbed the car... 15 people can lift it over the guardrail.
boom... down to the waterfront.
Next time...
don't fuck around...bring em down.

i wouldnt be suprised if SPD reads in here. no idea for sure, but we're linked up heavy around the web and from the seattle critical mass site. not sure if they'd get the wrong idea of us from the knife posts.
i dont want to be heavy handed deletorizor.. if the people talking about it want to edit it. go for it

My reaction was in NO part an indication of .83 or Critical Mass. My reaction was mine alone and out of concern for my well being. I do not condone my action or expect .83, Critical Mass, it's members, family or spawn to stand by my actions.
i have nothing to hide. i'm man enough to stand by my actions, proper or not. if i get a visit from seattles finest and or go to court with Mr. Spittles to address this fine. If i get in trouble it would be the first time in my life. I'm not going to edit this, i'm not going to apologize for my RE-action. I was spit on and thought i was going to be attacked by a truck! If that happened without the presents of a one ton truck and camper i woulda kicked the fuckers teeth in.
I also know from growing up in Montana, Wyoming and Colorado what language redneks understand. He got my message.
HOWEVER I AM SORRY for doing something that put mass and ,83 riders in a bad light.
i'm no pacifist, someone attacks me im gonna fight back. Maybe some folks are okay being spit on and MOST IMPORTANTLY letting some fuck attempt to run you over and do nothing. Do you understand he made the maneuver to run me over??? Not like some fool not seeing you, his move was intentional. At the level i ride i wont get knocked down, i'll be crushed!
Sorry if some of you don't like that. 20 years of commuting by bike and this is the 3rd time ive had to draw steel...and NOT use it...a very big difference from a person that just flashes a knife for no reason or to antagonize or start a fight. That person is not who i am...my move was defensive and made Mr. Spittles think twice about his need to make me road kill.
if that action is too out of line and bothers .83, the Admins have my permission to delete my profile, i'll remove my affiliation, avoid CM and ride alone.
it makes me sad to say that, but i'll take my lashes.

Trevor, what you did was pretty dumb. At the very least you should have expected that someone like that would get all law and order on you as soon as he lost the upper hand.
That said, I'm sure his account of the incident to the police left out a few insignificant details, like, say, the spitting and the "I'm a ninja in my truck" moves.

Well as long as we are doing people favors, how about CM does cycling in Seattle a favor and keep from riding on the viaduct. I ride my bike on 99 Monday through Friday from Everett to Greenlake so I'm not opposed to bikes on 99.
Taking bikes on the viaduct on the other hand just doesn't make sense to me. That is a portion of road that cars should reasonably be able to expect to be bicycle free. The viaduct doesn't provide a shorter or better route for bicycles, it provides a faster stoplight free route for cars.
I don't have a car or even a driver's license but if I did and I saw a bunch of cyclists clogging up the viaduct it would piss me off too. The only possible reason to be a bike on the viaduct is to antagonize motorists, and that isn't what we as cyclists need to be doing. Making a statement is fine, but make sure you are making the right statement.
As to Trevor, Jeff, and the little knife thing. Trevor stood up and apologized, cut him some slack he had just been spit on by a yahoo in a truck so Jeff, I'm sure that Trevor will stop his "bullshit macho-posturing" as soon as you quit the passive aggressive emo douche-baggery.

thanks for the support, no...wait...
I could have said nothing, or pussied out and rode away.
Please explain to me how making a motion to keep a one truck from running me over is "bullshit macho-posturing"?
Tell me Jeff, if it were you getting spit on and the motion of a big truck and a screaming rednek coming into your lane and a few hundred of biking brothers and sisters in front, next and behind you what would YOU do?
Funny, those around me who saw this understood and thanked me.
My action was part to protect myself (bullshit macho-posturing?) and to stop a potential disaster. What If I hadnt spoke Montaneese and he did pull into mass to take a line? This would be an entire different conversation...and likely without my part of the story.
So how about you cut a fucker some credit for;
a) stepping up
b) telling the truth
c) covering his ass
d) protecting his fellow bikers.
...and lay off the judgemental name calling, unless you were there.

Trevor,
The tried and true method to build universal support for a cause is through the use of passive resistance and martyrs. Unless you are prepared to die for the cause, and to die as a martyr, then you do more harm than good. You must always take the high road; always be in the right. If you give the other side an opportunity to attack your character they will and the conversation is no longer about the issue.

I'll give you A-C, but I'm not sure that long term this will serve to make motorists less likely to cut me off when passing, etc. I admire you for telling the truth, because when I heard about the letter I assumed it was a motorist that had pulled a knife. Threating his tires was a bad idea because it's easy to misinterpret as threating his body, but we all make mistakes, and that goes double in the heat of the moment. Your reaction to being attacked wasn't absurd, and it doesn't scare me from riding with you again.
What is scary as fuck were those intoxicated (on alcohol, drugs, power?) cops driving on the path post-Greenlake race at high speed. I thought they were going to run us over, and I've never had the same fear about CM riders.

Trevor,
I was there on the viaduct, I was right behind you when you pulled that knife. I saw the whole thing. You were not being polite to the redneck and that's why you got spit on. We were all being a bunch of arrogant, self-righteous pricks that day and I was never more fearful of my life while riding that route. It was stupid and very dangerous.
Riding the viaduct was stupid, stopping all 4 lanes of traffic and causing miles of gridlock was dangerous. That's the kind of idiotic move that blocks emergency vehicles.
I'm sorry I called you a macho prick. Sorry you got spit on, but to say we didn't have it coming by riding onto a freeway is a bit myopic.
Now let's all play nice.

jeff, i'd recommend not picking a fight with the guy with a knife.
'critical mass might block emergency vehicles' is probably the worst argument against it ever. i assure you that not a single driver stuck on 99 during rush hour traffic is worried that they might be blocking an emergency vehicle and fretting about their decision to drive that route rather than another.
it's also not okay to spit on someone, even if they're being a huge prick. "he had it coming because he was a jerk" is the same rationale trevor used in threatening the guy, and neither of them was in the right.

No one is picking a fight Lee. If Trevor needs to bring a knife to a bike ride that says more about him than anyone.
Escelating an already volitile situation is not doing us any good. I'm sorry you feel the need to defend him, but last I checked mass was more fun when we difused those situations with kindness and understanding. Were you riding next to Trevor when he confronted that guy? I was. They were both being reactionary jackasses.
