jeff, i'd recommend not picking a fight with the guy with a knife.

'critical mass might block emergency vehicles' is probably the worst argument against it ever. i assure you that not a single driver stuck on 99 during rush hour traffic is worried that they might be blocking an emergency vehicle and fretting about their decision to drive that route rather than another.

it's also not okay to spit on someone, even if they're being a huge prick. "he had it coming because he was a jerk" is the same rationale trevor used in threatening the guy, and neither of them was in the right.

wait, wait, wait...

I didn't threaten andBODY...I threatened his truck tire...if he was going to push his way into mass I was going to attempt stop his forward progress, cause i'b be bumper greese if he made it into that lane!

I NEVER THREATENED A PERSON!

it's not like I got up and put the thing into his face! That is an entirely different story.

Dumb idea, trevor.

Violence or the threat of violence rarely ever protects, it just escalates. I think your move was on par with the ignorance of the driver, and I'm really quite sad that your stunt set back critical mass as a whole.

i've yet to see (read whatever) how this "set back critical mass as a whole"? our action of leading 300+ bikes onto the viaduct was by far a dumber idea then my reactionary attempt to protect my ass.

damn...guys I ride at axle level, what will knock you guys over will KILL me...understand that I saw his tires turn out towards the group...where i was...i'm no match for a one ton truck! at least a flat tire would slow him down...thats my thinking...I did NOT threaten him!

Am I the only one who drives a car here?

Last time I got a flat, my car pulled hard toward the side the flat was on, not away from it. It seems to the the best reason for one to not stab a tyre of a moving car from ground level is the flat will result in the car coming towards you when it's already arms length away.

There is also the issue of the knife sticking in the tyre and what that would do you your hand as the tyre rolled.

Never mind how hard you would have to stab a tyre with steel belting to give it a flat, and what that would do to your own direction of travel when you let go of your steering on one side.

So I think the real lesson learned here should be physics. Well, and that you want a non-moving car to stab with a a blade which resembles a stiletto as much as possible.

Shame on you Trevor for making people think you can just get a trike and start stabbing tyres. I'll pretty disappointed with you until you get me a beer.

the lesson of the day?
to take out a tire, you need to do it from a safe distance, with a crossbow.

when I was trying to type "fuck off"

man that's a tough shot, i'd give it at least a +4 ac, plus a tire probably has a hardness of 2 or 3 and at least a couple hp's. since ranged weapons deal half damage against objects, even with a heavy crossbow at d10 damage you're going to be hard pressed to hurt it.

NERD FIGHT!

I don't think the knife incident was really a setback for critical mass, it'll blow over. It sounds like it did get SPD's attention though. If there continue to be reports of weapons being pulled for whatever reason I'm sure SPD's attitude and response would need to change. Crossbows sound like fun, but maybe better used as an alleycat theme?

Riding the viaduct with CM was probably the dumbest thing I've done on a bike. Which would explain why I was laughing and grinning the whole way. If it goes there again though I won't follow. It's been discussed before, Critical Mass isn't, and probably never will be, organized and disciplined enough to make a coherent statement. But it comes closest if it stays on the roads that cyclists are most likely to use. Likewise it makes no sense at all to take CM into pedestrian areas, like Seattle Center, and onto the Greenlake trail, as a few were attempting to do at the end of the ride. Yeah, let's show those pedestrians and kiddies on the trail who's boss! It pisses me off when cyclists, especially in large groups, fuck with pedestrians.

Best point of this thread so far: S.Canary subtly schooling us on the proper spelling of the word "tyre".

i'll no longer take a knyfe nor point it at a tyre...

Ben can, however, use it to gouge his eyes out if need be.

Yeah, the potholes were terrible, and the road was REALLY greasy, and there was nowhere to go to escape from the naked guy.

Really, it was thrilling and a little transgressive to ride on the viaduct, but I'm really OK with staying on surface streets and just riding around the city: It's a lot more fun, and the drivers aren't as dangerously angry.
