The Mayor is a pussy. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Stone Way was going to have bike lanes the whole way then the city changed thier minds couse the businesses complained.

I got this from Cascade

Working to Bridge the "Stone Way Gap"

Backtracking from their original plans to run bike lanes down the length of Stone Way North in Fremont from Bridge Way to the Burke-Gilman Trail, the Seattle Department of Transportation decided earlier this year to leave a 6-block gap between the Trail and N 40th St, ostensibly to prevent excess car and truck congestion.

However, according to a professional analysis commissioned by Cascade Bicycle Club and executed by planning and engineering firm Sprinkle Consulting, a three lane Stone Way with bicycle lanes would adequately serve the needs of automobile drivers while creating a new bicycle connection between a rapidly-growing residential center and the region’s large bicycle facility. We know that the presence of good bicycle facilities leads to increased bicycle use for trips to work and other errands – an important goal if our region is to grow without congestion and meet our climate change goals.

Cascade Bicycle Club has asked for a meeting with the Seattle Department of Transportation to discuss this new information and to request that they reconsider their plans for Stone Way. Cascade believes that we can achieve a design that works for all users.

Check our Stone Way page for more information and and read our letter to the City of Seattle (PDF).

Time for some letters.

Sounds like a good reason to go to the next SBAB. Unfortunately I have no idea when it is since their website is still horrific. Usually it is the first Wednesday of the month, but I'm pretty sure that is canceled for the 4th.

Sometimes I wish the global search and replace on Casscade was optional...

The mayor doesn't have anything to do with this -- at this point it's an "engineering decision" made by Director of Traffic Management Wayne Wentz. From our discussions with SDOT it appears to CBC that there was indeed pressure against a road diet from a vocal minority of Fremont businesses who are confusing cars with customers. From the analysis we commissioned we see now that a three-lane Stone Way could carry the current traffic volumes without becoming gridlocked. We're preparing to meet with the City again to discuss next steps.

If you want to send letters, I'd recommend writing Grace Crunican and Michael Mann (contact info here: http://www.seattle.gov/directory/)

you know that i'm a huge nerd when my solution to patrick's dilemma was to see if trainingwheels.org was available. unfortunately, it's yet another site that's totally being squatted on.

i've commented before that this stone way redesign is a bad idea. especially as population density is increasing along this corridor we need more, not less, improvements for pedestrian and cyclist facilities.

it will be interesting to see how people respond to lane-claiming behavior once the sharrows are in place, however.

What we're concerned about is motorists turning left onto the 4-lane section from a side street, encountering a car waiting to turn left, and swerving around at-speed into the right lane...directly into the place where cyclists will be encouraged to ride.

Could we grow up and get rid of these filters? This guy's trying to do good stuff here, and we're being children! ;)

Is a good club, however, they recommend that when folks come on their rides they bring 2 CO2 cartriges. A customer of mine took 2 but still could not get her tires pumped up. I advocate a pump as well!

She LOLed when I told here what happens when a .83 rider gets a flat on a ride!

Pop!

Call and email now!!!
http://www.seattle.gov/mayor/contact.htm

Dear David,

Act NOW to avert a major mistake and potential threat to the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan.

Contact Mayor Nickels here

The Seattle Department of Transportation has considered converting Stone Way in Fremont to a safer bicycle and pedestrian-friendly configuration since the 1980s. This plan was on course until the Fremont Chamber of Commerce mounted a campaign to halt the improvement between 40th and 34th Streets. As a result, the bike lanes that would have linked the Burke-Gilman Trail with the growing communities to the North have been stripped from the project, leaving a six-block gap (click here to learn more).

Join the Cascade Bicycle Club, Seattle Pedestrian Advisory Board, Seattle Bicycle Advisory Board, Fremont Neighborhood Council and many others in calling on the Mayor to intervene and set this project back on course.

Why should you care?

The Bicycle Master Plan hasn't even been adopted by the City Council and already its recommendations are under attack.

Should anti-bike effort succeed, it would set a horrible precedent. Moreover, it would emboldened cycling-opponents to try to strip other corridors from the plan. If this happens, no part of the $240 million, 450-mile biycle facility network is safe.
Contact Mayor Nickels here

Join pedestrian, bicycle and neighborhood groups by contacting Mayor Greg Nickels TODAY!

Ask him to exercise his leadership and stand up for a walkable, bikeable, livable Seattle. Ask him to reinstate the Stone Way road diet. Visit our Stone Way page

Thank you,

David Hiller

Just e-mailed Sharon the "Correspondence Manager" so she can +1 her hippy cyclist counter.

(if only the mayor actually read the e-mail that comes from that form)

This whole Stone Way thing is bull.
Any thoughts and directing Critical Mass up to Stone Way this Friday and rally it up?
This would be a good way to visibly protest as cyclists.

I'm still trying to figure out how to work the phrase "die in a cock fire" into a response. So, uhh, you can die in a cock fire if you don't write the mayor, politely!

oh yeah..i DID see the signs, all 6 of em!

what i DONT understand is that they're telling folks to walk their bikes on the dirt shoulder of the path! Uh, geniuses...theres not that much room with the damn trees in the way for folks to pass. How about a detour to the road below (thats where i'll be...always taking the low road)..oh, but that might interfere with the home owners...wah!

<edit>

i need to get my ranting on the right thread...all this silly horsekawk has me backspunsideup.

this was for the BGT trail closure thread, heah!
