So, let's say I want to remove both locknuts and cones from an axle. I've already got one side off with a pair of cone wrenches - when loosening one side always comes first, and it's no problem.

Now I've got the other side, still stuck as ever, and no way to grab onto the axle without putting the threads right into a vise, most likely damaging the threads.

Anyone know of a good way to get that second set of locknut/cone off?

You could thread a cap/acorn nut onto the end opposite the one with the remaining cone, then hold the axle still by clamping it with a vise or wrench. The direction you turn the axle to tighten the nut should be the one that will loosen the cone.

Ah, smart. I didn't think of using a cap. I had tried opposing two nuts against each other but that never seemed to provide enough torque! The cap is smarter by far.

You want an axle vise, it slips into a bech vise and clamps the axle. You could use wood on either side as well, basically you want the clamping material to be softer than the axle threads so you don't damage them.

You don't need to grab the axle, you only need to grab either the locknut or the cone. I put the locknut into a vise and then use a cone wrench on the cone.

Once you break them apart from each other you can remove them from the axle easily.
