At noonish, it was completely gone by bulldozer.

And no one was working on it, but it was sectioned off.

i just scoured the parks and recreation site and cant find any mention of it anywhere, much less mention of construction or removal.

http://www.seattle.gov/parks/parkspaces/FremontCanalPark.htm
there is the park in question

should we start dropping massive amounts of emails to the parks people to see whats up?

There were a whole lot of underage fixie kids drinking there on Saturday. Quite a few people. It wasn't exactly discreet.

sad if it goes, although i cant say im supprised.

But...

Theres still a perfectly good, legal, rather private firepit in Carkeek, so whats the big deal?

Plus, it has the target train, and fremont cant touch the ability to throw bottles at anything besides each other.

Mr. Dewey Potter from the Parks Department just got an email from me politely requesting more information. It's fun to write the city and see what standard-issue response they come up with for various concerns.

I wrote asking about some additional signage or something at the end of the Burke there at the Ballard Fred Meyer at 11th Ave NW & NW 45th street. What I got was a bunch of nothing (we share your concern for making our streets safe … thank you for taking the time to write) and this brilliant solution:
“The crossing at 11th Ave NE is where the trail terminates, requiring westbound bicyclists to transition from the trail to the street system; this involves following the rules of the road and yielding to the right-of-way, the same as a vehicle would. Furthermore, motorists on 11th Ave NW and 45th St face stop signs and it is their responsibility to yield to bicyclists and pedestrians in the legal crosswalk, marked or not marked.”

Not surprisingly, most motorists can’t maneuver that 4 way stop with no added stress of cyclists coming into traffic from the Burke, making it a damn 5-way stop. Many motorists refuse to respect the “box”, marked or unmarked for peds or bikes. AND cyclists heading towards Ballard are crossing the intersection diagonally. (Lanston, I believe we discussed this before – at the firepit, actually) RCW 46.61.240 states “(5) No pedestrian shall cross a roadway intersection diagonally unless authorized by official traffic-control devices; and, when authorized to cross diagonally, pedestrians shall cross only in accordance with the official traffic-control devices pertaining to such crossing movements.” It’s not a crosswalk if you are crossing diagonally and you can’t cross diagonally without authorization, but hey, the city of Seattle shares my concerns. So, the rebuttal letter is in the works. I can’t let it go. :)

If Dewey writes back, I will let ya’ll know!

It's sad to think that .83 is probably one the most conscientious groups to hang out at the fire pit. According to...was it Lee?...there were some kids burning plastic garbage bins there a couple of weeks ago. It's not hard to imagine that people consider it to be nuisance when that kind of bullshit is going on.

Two disadvantages to Carkeek are that it's much easier for the authorities to break up gatherings after hours and there is a lack of available wood to burn (and if you say the trees, I'll kick your smart ass).

But you are right that thanks to Carkeek we're not totally without a fire pit.

see, thats where it gets all mucky from my perspective.

If folks are burning, couches, garbage, witches, pagans, plastic crap then not only has the mob ruined it, its their own damn fault for not self checking, and why would anyone REALLY be surprised by the city shutting it down?

Of course one of two (if not both) things will happen;
a) a new pit emerges
b) existing pits are utilized (in the same manner, by the same people).

Granted we can write, mope, lament to the city AFTER the fact, but i'd be amazed if it does any good. Looks like the damages' done and the cryin begins.

If we learn (to little, too damn late) that the 'dozing of the Fremont pit is because of said shenanigans, then i'd purpose this:
a) public lambasting of teh fools actions that caused this move by the city (unless of course, we are part of that)
b) some self policing (i.e telling stupid fuckers to not burn their couch) of the existing pits to ensure dickheads dont ruin those too.

The times i've been to Carkeek, we've never had problems, not did we the times at Fremont either...but as we're all aware, it really only takes one really shitty incident to spoil it.

This is fucked up...

It was ordered destroyed by the parks department by order of the fire marshal.

thhat was really the 4th generation fire pit... but it was "the fremont fire pit" that many of us have been using for 10-12 years...

he original fire pan was donate by Peter Bevis, the guy who brought the Kalakala back to seattle. He lives in the loft of the foundry he built... it is the buillding just south of Free Range cycles. He built the fremont foundry in the 80's and he put a giant fire pan down at the end of canal street for ritual art burning. The basalts and the berm followed. He actually has a fire pit next to the foundry, but that is for foundry residents and Peter is 300 lbs of artist who you do not want to infringe upon.

The firepit earthwork circle was created by the urban architecture student fromt he university of washington under the instruction of Steve Badanes, the artist who created the Fremont Troll. The firepit was designed to emulate many of the Dolman type standing stone ritual structures of the ancient world.

The columnar basalts were carved just up the street by the guy who makes all the marble fountains you see around seattle. These had been used at a fremont winter solstice (the winter solstice is a feast that is a sorta semi private snobbishness put on by parade organizers) after the feast Peter Toms, one of the people who founded the Solstice parade, put the columnar basalts at the mouth of the earthworks.

If they are destroying it is pretty bad. I just called a long time fremont resident/arts c ouncil member and he is on his way down there.

This will get some response from the Fremont sector and Mr. Badanes will hear about this fairly soon. Peter Bevis will perhaps build a fire there tonight... if I have time I might run on down with the flame thrower and torch up some logs...

That being said, .83 is *not* one of the more conscientious groups that use the fire pit, we have been doing all sorts of "rituals" ... not like goofy fat people in robes rituals... but people getting rid of stuff... at the fire pit of 10-15 years or so... generally a lot of art... masks/sculptures... art that is gone past it's usefullness is torched by artists there... there used to be a mayday fire and a halloween fire and sometimes a winter solstice fire... nothing religious or the like... but sorta ritualized behavior to mark the local festivals... I've been out of touch since I moved out of the foundry... but I am sure all the regular art burnings happen, we just dont go there enough to see it...

not to say it isn't overrun by vagrants... but as a resident... it was a place I would go when I had a piece of art that went to die... and I would go down there and if I saw a bunch of people drunk and standing around i would walk back up the street and wait for the next night or come back after they left...

so... whereas you guys aren't like the homeless people that live by the cememnt factory... you still do chase locals away from the pit... not that they mind.... it was put there for the public... but... I am sure locals see .83 and turn around and go home just like they have as long as the pit has been there...

anyway... as I was writing this, I talked to a few people and the base summation is that fhe fire pit is not gone... it has been bulldozed and since we have shovels, and we still can light fires... then the fire pit must surely still be there. We might just have to excavate it a little and shed some fire on the ground to illuminate the situation.

anyway, that's my epitaph and rant.

Let's go have a fire there tomorrow night.

All I meant by that is that .83 has been one of the more respectful groups to visit the fire pit. In my experience .83ers tend to clean up after themselves and don't burn things they shouldn't, derrick notwithstanding.

Dear Laura,

As you may know, Parks recently received a violation notice from the Fire Marshal's office concerning illegal fires at this site (e.g., fires lit by people who had no permit). The Fire Department had also been responding at an increased frequency to nuisance fires at this site.

Parks closed the site temporarily to ensure no more violations. Signs posted at the site last week were vandalized and burned. Parks posted new signs today. We will schedule a public meeting with the community to discuss the future options for this site - the information is all posted on the signs.

Sincerely,

(Ms.) Dewey Potter
Communications Manager
Seattle Parks and Recreation

Oh yeah, I know, and I don't disagree to an extent... it is just that a huge number of people use it that have no idea that it is this very important sacred space for the local community... and it is really cool in what it is... in that it is as close as you can get to a secular sacred space... it's just everything to everybody...

I was just saying that... why it was built, and what it's primary intention is... is way different than a place to go get rowdy and rip derricks pants off..

and at the same time... I and I am sure any other freemonsters that would avoid the firepit when kids were down there partying... never cared... I just wanted people to know that there was a whole different culture that used the fire pit... and the coolest thing is that culture accepted the wild parties that occured in their somber space... but .83 gatherings definitely fall into the rowdy side of it... it's been a pretty multi use space...

and hell... sometimes our somber gatherings would get puntuated by garbage bags of acetylene blowing up... the fremont community used to be kinda rowdy... but the original purpose was to go down there when your art making got so intense that you were chipping your teeth on the front site of your .357... so you called a friend or two and said... hey, let's burn something... that was the original intention...

I dunnkknow about burning a couch... that's a little bad... but I've set off military grade napalm and I torched a Porsche motor there with industrial thermite... so... who am I to complain...

but yeah... let's go get fuckin arrested tomorrow! As users of the pit... it's our duty!

Come on John, "Fremont" is long dead. Almost all the people that made that neighborhood something special are burned out, sold out, dead or gone. All dispersed in the name of the all-holy Property Value.

I dunnknow, I am going probably break away from the ride tonight to go to the fachead meeting, they are getting stirred up... and yeah... this whole city is a rotting corpse of childhood memories for me... all the cool stuff this city had is pretty much dead and gone... but I am interested in what the local response will be the natives are restless:
Quote:

COW is 7PM 7/10/07 (Tues) at the Power House!
Mingle till 7:10 PM when the meeting will begin!

A proposal for discussion/adoption at tomorrow's COW:

The Fremont Arts Council strongly protests both the destruction of
the Fremont Fire Circle and the failure of City authorities to
communicate with the Fremont community regarding the Circle. The
Fire Circle has served as a community gathering place, a spiritual
and ceremonial site, and a point of pride to Fremont residents
since it was constructed in 1994 in a joint project of the Fremont
Arts Council, UW's Howard S. Wright Studio, and the Seattle Parks &
Recreation Deparetment.

The Fremont Arts Council supports reconstruction of a ceremonial
Fire Circle on the same site and is prepared to assist with
design and construction labor towards this goal.

Let us pass around a sign-up sheet at the COW for people to state
how many hours of time they are willing to volunteer toward the
rebirth of the Fire Circle.

Regards,
Chuck

How many hours have you guys spent there and how many hours will you spend shoveling dirt and laying cement...

you want to demonstrate you are conscientious users... go down and sign up! That will be the difference in people who thoughtfully and thoughtlessly made use of the space.

Personally I have a feeling the new pit is going to be a cross between the gasworks sundial and a firepit.

when and where is said sign-up sheet?

i'll go there on my own to support this. reading your history of this makes me recognize that if we really DO want to not only continue to use this but call it the pointeethree unofficial club space, then we really should help out.

...or be lazy whores and find another place to desecrate.

I totally support the re-making of a firepit in that location, or nearby if there is some silly location-based problem with the current one. I would prefer a simple pit to something more indelible and fancy-shmancy. The berm was good as a built-in place to sit, and as it was made of earth(I assume. maybe there was dead art under there. A somewhat creepy thought.) it was not very susceptible to destruction by vandals. The stones that the old pit had were fine with me because they were simple, unadorned and worked into the site.

I will move the earth but I desire no monument for this.

I've come to the difficult conclusion that it just doesn't make sense for me to live on a boat at this point. Sad but true.

Also my dad has a gorgeous 36' sailboat that lives in Anacortes and a great 15 foot daysailer that lives on lake washington, so despite my overwhealming urge to own something like this girl:

It would be redundant considering the boats I've got access to.

I've been thinking i'd like to go to the Homathko River, just north of Desolation sound. The ideal boat to do that in would be something like this. I even went up to Anacortes and checked one out, but then the owner decided it wasn't for sale.

And really? I'm not going to have time to make it a 3 week trip.

So I've decided what i really want is something fast (think day trips into the san juans from Anacortes), relatively protected from the elements (I think the water is prettiest in February) and trailerable.

So now i'm looking for something more along the lines of this or this. Of course i'm not prepared to buy either of those new, and the used market is slow. So i'll keep waiting until the perfect thing pops up.

I do like boats.

The sign up sheet will be at the Fremont Arts Council's meeting tonight at 7PM

It would make a lot of people really happy if the bike club that uses the space comes and makes a commitment to help rebuild it. And it IS going to be rebuilt. the FACheads have bumped heads with the city for 25 years and they always win.

the location of the meeting tonight is at :

In addition, we are formally involved now.

I was interviewed by The Stranger today and as it will be retold, a cyclist from .83, a bike club that makes heavy use of the fire pit, discovered the city sanctioned destruction of public art, they contacted the fremont arts council and it is to be the primary topic of tonights meeting of the FAC.

So we should run our ride by there on our way to build a fire at the fire pit and get arrested.

See you guys at Red Square.

i got mine...for shaving magnesium for a good fire start of course!

FWIW, i'm NOT getting arrested over a fire pit! Sign a petition, pick up a shovel, do manual labor for re-creation...you bet...a stint in the King County Bed-n-Breakfast is not on my list for this week!

John,
Since you "formally" involved us, PLEASE keep us posted as to what needs to be done, where and when. If I cannot make to Fremont to sign the petition, or ride (too much workie...not enough dayee) then I personally would like to be in the loop...so to speak.

I'm sure that the bulldozing of the firepit was in response to what happened to the first set of signs. I don't know if rebuilding the firepit right now is the best idea. If there's any hope of having a legal firepit there at all, pissing off the authorities right now isn't going to help bring it into being. I say wait to rebuild illegally until they either a) put the kibosh on any firepit at all or b) drag their heels on it in the hopes that people will lose interest in having it rebuilt.

a) logic does not apply when talking of boats (especially when you open with one such the Kutter)
2) unshapely plastic powerboats are a blight. why? see 'a'.
III) dont be afraid of wooden boats. why? see 'a'.
lastly) i dont really care. i just love sexy wood boats. (see 'a').

If the meeting is at 7, which is when we usually meet, are people meeting at Red Square at 7 first then heading to the FAC? Or meet at the FAC at 7?
