So I'm starting my first fixed build up. I've wrenched on my cross, and MT bike. I also just finished repainting and puting back together an old Schwinn World. But I've never spec'd parts for a ground up build.

I got in on a group buy at bikeforums for an IRO, it arrived yesterday, let the building begin.

First ? is about cranks.
Will I be happy w/ Bulletproofs? I was planning on getting Miche Primato Pista's. But I wouldn't mind cutting the build cost down some. I'm sure there's a huge difference between the two, but will I notice?

Anybody running Bulletproofs? The little devil on the left keeps telling me to quit bitching, sack up, and get the Miche's.

Any other options I should check out?

Also, is there a good shop around town for track parts? It's slim picking here on the eastside. I can order online but I wouldn't mind having them in my hot little hands right away.

Most likely you won't notice any difference. Anyway, if you were really worried about BB flex, you'd go for an American style BB. Different cranks don't make a huge difference. Unless there is some other issue you're worried about.

The frame generally makes the biggest difference in flex from pedaling.

$15 used cranks from recycled and a $15 bottom bracket haven't steered me wrong more than a couple times.

Do they have a large selection of cranks at Recycled?

My original idea for this was to make something as aesthetically pleasing as possible without going overboard with cost. Are their used cranks in good condition? What should I expect to find?

Another question, is of course chain line. I'll be getting formula hubs, and the drop outs are 120, so I'll be going for 42. Like I said, I've never spec'd a track bike from the ground up. Will I be asking for a head ache trying to peice together used/non track specific crank and BB?

i bought black bulletproof cranks for my fixed and they've been fine (got them from aaron). they say "letproof" on them know from all the rub off of my shoe hitting them over time... thats the price you pay getting black parts i guess

overall, no problems whatsoever, solid.

some cranks are good, some cranks are bad. the best deals are the ones that look like crap but are mechanically sound. it seems like the ebb and flow has been pretty serious lately, i was in the other day and there was a big pile, a few weeks back pickings were quite slim.

you should be more or less fine on the chainline front, you might have to use the inner ring, which is maybe not as aesthetically pleasing as you'd like.

do you plan on racing track with this bike?

But it allows the use of a Salsa Ring Dinger so you are less likely to get your pants dirty/fucked/sucked.

I'd like to avoid using a road crank, as you mentioned, it probably won't look as clean. I bet track cranks don't last long there huh?

Racing track on this is not out of the question, it looks like a lot of fun, not sure if I'm there yet in the fitness department. I was planning on checking out a beginner's clinic or something like that later this summer. If there is such a thing. So I'd like to keep parts suitable for that scenario down the road.

This project is basically 50% function and 50% fucking around. It won't get a whole lot of abuse, so I won't feel to bad picking up "nicer" components. To be honest, I'm not sure how the bike will work out for me in general. I live on top of Finn Hill so I go up and down that shit every day.

Tell me if this is totally stupid logic.
I was planning on keeping as many of the components as possible from Italian origin. It's a 1" threadless, so I was gonna get a Cinelli stem and headset, and maybe the Miche crankset. I was going to try and keep a classic theme going and get a Brooks. But then my Italian theme is kinda shot. So maybe I should forget my "classic" theme and check out Sugino RD's? Sorry, thinking out loud here.

I live right by Moorlands Park now. right by the Kenmore city line.

I grew up around there to. I lived right by Village Mart. Did you go to Fin Hill Jr, or Juanita High?

Yeah, that hills hard enough on the geared CX bike. I do it everyday as part of my commute. Somtimes I hit Albertson Hill for some extra pain,

It is all luck. Between them, Free Range Cycles, and Second Ascent you'll be able to find something that works and which won't break the budget (all three sell used parts).

There is nothing track specific about a crank. Just get rings without shifting ramps and you'll be fine.
