from my inbox a few minutes ago:
Quote:
Hi there,
About a year ago, I was riding my bike home at night and ran into a huge pack of y'all coming down the hill into the Montlake cut. You told me that you were part of Point 83, and I've been meaning to catch up with you ever since!
Happily, I've since become an intern at the Seattle Times and now have the excuse to write about the regular Midnight Greenlake Race you all do every month. (I was there once, by chance, and saw a man on a huge, crazy bike. It looked like a lot of fun).
I'm writing to you for two reasons: 1) in hope of getting a little more information about the race, and 2) to make sure it's fine with you (and all of the members) if a photographer and I come out there next Friday.
Will you give me a call or drop me a line as soon as you get a chance?
Thanks!
Haley
not sure what angle she wants to write about, but generally her stuff in the past is about travel/outdoors. id worry that an angle about racing on a public trail would come up (that id like to avoid)... but besides that, anyone have any thoughts or objections on a Times reporter wanting to come out on a ride and the greenlake race with us for a story?
i wrote back initially and told her to come out on a tuesday or a thursday as those are a better barometer of the group.

Hum. Just one man's opinion, but an article about the greenlake race could mean the end of the greenlake race as we know it.
But Tues/Thurs rides should be cool.

yeah, i was a little worried about it becoming too well known. i looked around at her history of written pieces, and she doesnt seem to write scalding attack articles, or pieces heavily angled towards an agenda.. but yeah, PR could be bad pr if it gets too many eyes on us using a park for a race.
still, the race is at MIDNIGHT. it being so late keeps it pretty safetacular. ill be talking to her tonight and see what direction she wants to take on it and let you guys know.
good point though, too much pr might be bad.. we should take that into consideration

I'd wager that the race isn't exactly top secret. It is allowed to ride bikes on the trail, we're only violating the spirit of the code, I'm guessing. She should do the thursday ride, friday CM and then the race that night. Ultra Bike Marathon!
She does have a bike, right?

as a part of a couple of mosquito fleet interviews with various publications, we've always been very careful about discussing, or letting reporters see any shred of illegal activity (blocking traffic, running lights, riding intoxicated, unregestered bikes, illegal performance parts, etc).
we did one interview with one of the uw papers, and someone said a little too much. the whole focus of the interview turned to crazy riding, illegal parts on our bikes, and a huge fight we got into at the dead babies party a few years back. it didn't cause any problems, but we prefer to stay under the radar with certain things.
i think the same could be said for something like the greenlake race. keeping it under the radar, keeps it around for everyone.
and while it would be cool if a hundred spectators started showing up for it, chances of the cops getting wind of it would greatly increase.

The greenlake race is undoubtedly known about by someone who might have the authority to stop it but doesn't currently care enough to do so because it's not a nuisance. If it looks like the race is being advertised widely, thereby drawing in a larger number of rowdy spectators and participants, or if some NIMBY resident of greenlake happens to read that *gasp* there's a race happening while they sleep, it might bring trouble. It might also cause problems in the form of people who just want to disrupt the race because they're assholes. In any case, I think the fremont firepit is a good example of what can happen to a beloved event/site when it draws too much attention. Once upon a time, it was just a place to hang out for those in the know. Then it got too popular. Now it's gone.
My point is this: The race shouldn't be kept a secret, but it's existence shouldn't be broadcast to those who aren't first interested in becoming enough a part of the biking community to learn about it.
That said, nothing's going to prevent that reporter from showing up at some .83 event, be it the race or a ride, so I guess the best strategy is to at least be friendly.

Indeed. I think we need to stand by our signature event. If we get enough people racing, we might even have to break the race down into a couple of heats.
It being at midnight is nearly guaranteed to keep a large majority of racers & weenies at home in bed. Lord knows I've missed more than I've made recently.

Yeah, but needing it's own zip-code is a bit excessive.

there have been lots of other tall bikes on the greenlake race :)
on topic of reporter. she backed out because they have her working on things with conflicting times for the next couple of months. i made sure the concerns about "too much publicity destroying a good thing" were heard and she understood.
so nevahmind. this is on the back burner.
