i love the fact that apparently the 4chan kids had enough time to write not one but TWO fake harry potter #7's, typeset and print them and then photograph them one page at a time to upload to the internet.

I don't read Harry Potter, and I don't know if this is a real spoiler, but let me just say: people who purposely spoil books and movies for others are douchebags.
People who spoil on accident by not including proper spoiler tags are also idiots (I'm looking at you Wired).

I'm coming out as having read all the Harry Potter books last summer, one right after the other, riding all over town to whichever library had the next book so I didn't have to wait to see what happened next. If this is a true spoiler, I will have no choice but to hit John where it hurts most: I'll bulldoze the Fremont fire pit!

i may have come from mississippi and attended public schools there, but i read above a 3rd grade level since i was in kindergarten.
seriously, grow the fuck up. who cares what happens??
unless the book ended with him realizing that he's a delusional 40year old man who rapes little boys and dresses like most of the street trash in front of my apartment, chances are this one will suck like the last one. there's my spoiler.

NO...nonononoonono....
anyone who cares already knows that there are 759 pages in the last Harry Potter book... all the news articles were saturated with it... "someone took 759" pictures of the new harry potter novel with their camera phone"
that's why I put pg. 761 on the "spoiler". Fucking Duh!
I even set up SurlyKat to spoil my pseudo spoiler right after I posted it (she'd comment on this, but I think she is already in line waiting for the book release on saturday... geeeeek)
Now to address actual spoilers...of any sort... I think they are awful and a crime slightly more heinous than murder... as the only real value of human beings is the artistic act of creating... what else have humans done that is of any significance? Jack shit, that's what we have done... wars, waste, hate. So the only thing we are worth is our art... even if it is pulp...
so when one human actually blows the art of another human being, no matter how trivial and pulp the art is...spoiling the work of any artist/creator/etc... that's a far worse crime to me than the fires of dachau... or the bombing of dresden... far far worse than popping an airline into a financial center... for the action of spoiling art/religion/etc is the focused act of destroying that which is the singular justification of the human waste machine.
If you have a problem with Harry Potter fans... do what any fan hater does... go to where they are waiting in line and throw eggs or bags of feces at them...
but don''t spoil the art...
sorry if anyone took this seriously....
I was debating posting it... and I got an email from Kat that said "If anyone posts Harry Potter Spoilers on the .83 forum they are getting a nutpunch"... and as soon as I read that... I had to hit "Submit"...
anyway...
Sorry about that...
it was fun though...
snicker...

Because I'm a librarian, and King Nerd Extraordinaire, I'm currently obsessed with Harry Potter. I saw this post today, and refrained from reading it until after I talked it over with Lee. But to say that I was pissed doesn't even really begin to cover it.
10 years I've been reading these books, patiently awaiting the next, wanting to enjoy to story on its own merits. But to anyone who thinks that the ending "isn't a big deal" and desires to reveal the ending at the instant (or previous) to its release surely doesn't know the care that's been put into the story, about how much thought and effort has been put into this final resolution. It's disrespectful to the artist, and disrespectful to the people who want to enjoy the novel as it is.
Although Lee brought up an excellent point -- it's not like it's an M. Night Shaylaman movie, where ALL POTENTIAL JOY is sucked from the production when the klutch point is revealed. But when there's an expectation of something to happen (the spoiler or even the fake spoiler), it colors the experience. I begin looking for clues when none may exist. I keep expecting the spoiler to happen, and when it does, then the build up was for nothing. I already knew.
Thankfully, after the fact, I realized that John's joke, while really pushing my buttons and making me pretty angry (almost to the btah regular every day level) was just that -- a joke. Because I knew the book didn't have that many pages. Duh. What this does mean, though, is that starting after work tomorrow, I'm on media blackout. There is no safe haven of communication. No looking at newsstands. No reading anything on the internet. Fuck, I'm even avoiding going out drinking friday night. Saturday morning, I'm picking up my book, and I'm reading it. I intend on enjoying it that way.
So, if for nothing else than it makes you a reasonable decent friend and/or acquaintance, if you know something about the book or the big reveal, please just keep it to yourself for a while. Thank you.
Anybody wanting to debate with me about the merits of the series is welcome to. Be prepared to eat crow.

I think that's the point of my joke...
which is actually more a bitter commentary on a world intent the destruction of enchantment (and by enchantment I mean it in the literary or Bruto Bettelheim sense of the word, not the hocus pocus sense). You do in fact have to give yourself a media blackout to prevent your experience from being enjoyed... wierd.
ftr:
You should read the Russian Noghtwatch novels, but only after you finnish the HP books... same sort of fiction, but they are actually good lit. They smoke american pulp fantasy.

yano, I knew, intellectually, that **** dies in the previous novel, and I still read it and enjoyed it. I even had forgotten about the spoiler by the time I got to it, I was so enchanted with the story. Just sayin.

Agreed. I'll readily admit to being a fan(atic)... but only because it is such an amazing story. So the writing is easy to read... that doesn't detract from the universality of the story.
Oh yeah, and (because I'm such a nerd) I'm going to be at the book release party at the University Bookstore tomorrow night... anyone else feel like joining? There are numerous fine drinking establishments in close proximity to the bookstore in case the kid quotient is too high or midnight won't come soon enough. You know you want to...

I'll be at le fleur. though I pre-ordered so I could have a head start on everyone. I had to threaten serious amounts of grievous bodily harm after book 6 came out because everyone and their dead crack smokin' grandmother wanted to tell me all about it.

I was originally going to skip the midnight releases, but I'm becoming more and more drawn to the idea of being able to wake up and get to reading. I'm possibly in.

OKOKOK
now... I apologized to all the HP fans for the fake spoiler... and I actually really enjoyed the books...
But, when y'all get over the fanfare and plow through the final HP book... Check out Lukyanenko's Nightwatch series... translated from the russian... Nochnoy Dozor...
just don't read them before you read the last Harry Potter book though... as after reading them... you'll find that your standards are quite a bit higher. They actually take a magical world and make use of the moral ambiguities and changed ethos at a level that is somewhat beyond the sophmoric meanderings og 99.9999% of the fantasy novels out there.
