ok, so i picked up a 1996 raliegh m80 all mountain. i want to make it in to a go-anywhere-i-want road/light trail bike. problems:

1. it has a threadless 1" rock shox on the front that is more than dead. i want a non-suspension fork for a 26" wheel that will accommodate lateral pull brakes or disc. i have been to a few shops, and NOBODY can get close to making this happen. i would really like to not put some useless shock on the front of it, options???

2. i have a 7-speed drive train on it now and a brand new 8speed shifter, derailur, and cassette in my possession. from what i can tell, the 8 speed doesn't fit the 7-speed wheel. is there anyone out there that has a 8-9 speed rear 26" wheel in fair-good condition that they want to part with??

i am also putting this together with the intent of also letting kristin ride it and get familiar with the seattle streets without dumping too much money in a hobby that she is not %100 sure that she will enjoy. any parts that go on it need to be decent quality, but i am not looking to go all out with some crazy fox/xtr component combo.

any (intelligent) ideas?

thanks

p.s before somebody brings it up, i have tried vello, greg's, performance, fluid ride, recycled, 2020, the interweb and rei.

if you can muster up a wheel, let me know. i have beer/liquor/cash for trade as needed.

i'm pretty sure i have a matching wheel set. and if it's what i think it is you can have it for beer/liquor.

oh and a 1" threadless disc fork doesn't exist, with the exception of high end custom stuff like vicious.

i figured that the 1" fork with disc mounts was an illusion. not that i wanted it really, i don't think i will be plummeting down a mountain ever on a 1" headset, hell i hope nobody does.

you riding thursday night ben??

You can run 7 cogs from an 8sp cassette on a 7sp hub just fine. You can even use a 8sp shifter with a 7sp cassette, it just doesn't shift quite as nicely. 8sp Shimano spacing is 4.8mm cog to cog, 7sp is 5mm cog to cog.

The 7sp wheel will be stronger and you already have it, might as well use it.
