As an extra incentive to come, I've procured two "Mayor Gridlock" shirts to give away on Wednesday. It'd be fun if you wore it on the ride. They're American Apparel size small.
First two folks to find me on the ride (I'll be a little late) get 'em. Thanks go out to our friends at the Stranger for the hookup.

Here's the article in the stranger about wednesday:
Unfortunately, they give point83.com as the address for more info. Is it possible to post something on the homepage that directs folks to seattlelikesbikes?

I emailed Erica on Thursday morning and she still hasn't had it changed, so I don't think she's going to or perhaps can't. The ride also got a mention on Slog the other day, as well. Thankfully that used the correct link.
Derrick was planning on putting a re-direct on the point83 main page for all those who came looking for SeattleLikesBikes stuff.

oh lord. you own!
additionally, because the forum won't actually let me post this to the flyering thread:
I feel like my head has been run over and I think I'm going to stay in today, at least while the sun is out and my temples are pounding. Anyone who can hit the U-district locations from my list wins my undying love and appreciation. And oh yeh, I'll buy you a beer.

A friend of mine & sympathizer to the cause hung a sign in the Fremont Starfucks on Friday and surprise, surprise ... it has been removed! Bastards!
Plan is to plaster the telephone poles outside that place tonight. The Interurban Statues will get some poster love tonight ... and whatever else I can come up with between now and well, tonight.

Have we gotten flyers to hand out to motorists made up? I can't ride! So I want to show to hand stuff out to disgruntled drivers who want to know what's up.
Yes yes?

We will have flyers for motorists as well, currently under development. Someone bring Derrick a BLT or some other yummy bacon-type treat. He has to make the text snappy looking.
And here's to Henry for working the website and to Nova who is maintaining all these contacts! Btw - have you heard from the cyclist recently injured on Stone Way we learned about via CM on Friday? Curious ...

Think we could put together a petition and take it around to the fremont area businesses to see if get a bunch of busineses to say that they support bicycle lanes on Stone Way? That might work as a great antidote to the "business pushback" that the city is getting.
I just have to say that you are all kick ass awesome! I am very impressed!

!!!LARGE POSTER location suggestion!!!
I don't want to look for & quote the person who suggested a large, large poster ... but I have a location suggestion. Not my idea, but a friend's. If you are heading out from Fremont on the Burke, that cement retaining wall a bit before Gasworks on the left would be perfect ... can it happen?

Last night Cascade sent out an ACT NOW! email, which included this passage:
"What can you do?
Cycle to demonstrate that "Seattle Likes Bikes"
A group of citizens is taking to their bikes on Wednesday, Aug. 1 to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the City's plan on Stone Way. Visit the Seattle Likes Bikes website to learn more and get involved."

Want a sign to put on your bike? Too lazy to make one yourself? Cascade made one for you:
Print it out (landscape mode), laminate or mount on posterboard, attach to your bike, and you're good to go!
I think I'm gonna go with this on one side, and a hand-written note to Mayor Nickels on the other.

I'm gonna bring my Burley trailer, just so I have more room to plaster signs all over. Also, this allows me to carry our mile of twine, to help everyone jerry-rig signs to bikes.

I have a trailer someone can borrow for this sort of rolling advertisement if they like. I'd do it, but I'm not able to make the ride due to work.

SDOT painted this afternoon. South of 40th it is 4 car lanes and no bicycle lanes. The sharrows are right in the parked car door range.
It is a good thing that this stuff is water-based and will come off with a pressure washer.

hardly, but fitting for our "movement"!
they had spent the past few months resurfacing Stone so they HAD to mark it the way it was...since the BMP is not in effect yet.

there is a new lane configuration from 40th all the way up to 50th. one lane each direction, turn lane, and bike lanes on the side. the fight here is that should be continued all the way down the hill

no bike lanes, no sharrows, not signage, not pavement markings!
I think Seattle's streets have gotten to the point where just fixing the surface is the priority. Our government wastes so much money discussing things the "Seattle Way" that nothing ever gets fixed!
The 5 million dollars they are spending to repair and reinforce the viaduct only 4 years before it gets torn down (2012) is just crazy and that money could better be spent re-paving streets, fixing sidewalks, etc.
Still, bike infrastructure is a good thing.

ATTACHING SIGNS TO BIKES/BACKPACKS FOR THE RIDE:
regular ole' paper is too flimy ... laminating was too time consuming ... so how about this? All us office monkeys (self included) have access to file folders. Old, beat up file folders that are sitting in a supply closet or drawer somewhere. We can easily attach any of the proposed signs to 1/2 of a file folder and then punch holes in that in order to string the sign on bags, panniers, bikes, whatever.
Bring your file folders ...

I rode stone way last night to see what all the fuss is about and ... well I'm still not sure what all the fuss is about.
The road is nice and smooth and repaved and painted with sharrows for the few blocks without a bike lane. Who the fuck rides in the bike lane anyways?
At any rate, I plan on riding tonight to support you commie pinkos.

Does anyone have one of those cool people counter things like elementary school bus drivers used to make sure they don't leave any kiddos sleeping in the back seat?

We'll be sure not to use you as a spokesperson, Jeff.
Anyway, to practice:
<pressrelease>
The city has a Bicycle Master Plan. There needs to be a route from the Burke-Gilman to Greenlake, two popular cycling locations. The city logically chose Stone Way. They said there would be bike lanes. Then they backed off based on bogus traffic studies and the fear of a few local business owners.
The city needs to keep its promises, and follow the Bicycle Master Plan.
</pressrelease>
Yes, Jeff, you and I don't need bicycle lanes. We eschew them in fact. But we're not protesting for you and me, we're protesting for all the cyclists. Lots of cyclists like bike lanes. They make them warm and fuzzy. They make them feel like they are wanted. We're doing this for them.
Also, as others have pointed out, if they back out here, they'll back out elsewhere. Like, say, California Ave SW. Read the Slog posting abamfici pointed to last night.

Yeah Greg is right on here. I honestly will probably use the bike lanes on Stone way 10 times a year, but infrastructure is really important for getting n00bs out. More n00bs, more bikes, better living.

And having the lanes means n00bs will venture off the Burke-Gilman and onto Stone ... say to access some other northern detination. The lanes, if nothing else, provide a presence. It gives people confidence to leave the BG trail and get on a road with a bike lane ... then someday they will be tooling around in traffic sans a bike lane, like most of the rest of us.

Last night, I was searching for something strong to turn into signs. After deciding that I didn't really want to destroy my son's school projects for the posterboard, I, too, hit on the old file folders solution.
Also handy to have: glue sticks, scissors, markers, safety pins, string.
