I am game for a Friday departure but gosh if we really want to do it Goran Kropp style we’d probably need to ride all the way from Seattle.

The group sounds reasonably large that Friday and Saturday departures would be fine. The route is not hard to follow.

I wish I could go either of the weekends being discussed. We have plans on the 4th and I'll be out of town the 11th and the 18th. If was the week after that then I'd be there. I love the Mountain Loop Highway loop.

Last time I did this route I just parked in Granite Falls. There is parking in the middle of town across from a playground.

You can do the whole loop and come back via Arlington. The loop is about 100 miles.

I did just get back from my own killer bike camping trip. Some photos are here:

Gifford Pinchot is the best middle of nowhere bike tour in the state. At least that I've been on.

I'd be all about strapping an ice axe on a pannier for this trip, but I'm climbing Ruth that weekend.

From the waiver:

"WHEREAS, the undersigned realizes that travel upon the Monte Cristo Road is extremely hazardous and that the road has been subject to such hazards as washouts and slides and is in such a serious state of disrepair so as to make access possible now only by four wheel drive vehicles, if at all."

I have some concerns about this destination and it's appropriateness for bikes. I've hiked it, and the road is in very very bad shape for long stretches. Short of riding mountain bikes or LHTs with oversized tires, I'm not sure how many of us are going to be able to get our bikes in and out in one piece without a ton of biovac-ing. 5 miles is 4.8 miles too far to push my bike, especially under load.

Don't worry, Langston, after .1 miles of your complaining about pushing your bike we'll beat you unconscious and leave you for the bears, so no 5 miles for you.

More road info:
Jul 04, 2007 by The Toad
Gothic Basin #724,Weden Creek #724,Monte Cristo
The Glacier Peak Area | Link to this report
We didn't step foot on the Gothic Basin/Weden Creek trail. Just a note to say that the mudslide that washed out the road is passable via a high trail around the slide. So you can still walk the road to access the trail-head. The mudslide is spectacular and worth the short walk in to see the brand new terrain. The bridge over the S. Fork Sauk past the trailhead is half gone as well, but there are two trees down that allow access across a fork of the river to what's left of the bridge. The carnage wrought by nature upon all things manmade is something to behold.
Oh and cheers to the steady stream of hearty souls who dragged their bikes over the horizontal trees become bridge to peddle the road to Monte Cristo. You're sure footed and strong backed, I'll give you that much. Your bravery or foolishness tottering across those trees toting your bikes I won't comment on!

okay, I won't. When you want to go hiking, let's plan a hike. Fuck these pushing my bike through the woods plans. Get a picture of whomever falls off the logbrige and gets speared onto their bars.

Three more days to go before adventure cycling. Remember that Aug 10-29 is the big traffic mess caused by the re-jointing of I-5. I am planning on leaving after the morning work traffic about 11am. I know Ben and Andre wanted to go on Friday. Lee+ is talking about leaving Friday night and Bivouacing on the way to Monte Cristo.
Home number 206-932-8323
I can take another bike maybe two if one bike has no front fender and has quick releases. Three people in the cab of the little truck is real chummy.
I tried a little pre run with ice axe, things are good I can even strap my light-weight crampons on the back of the bike.

Good Morning!

I'm with the Saturday morning group and would like more details about our departure.

Do we have a leader? Where and when to meet? Anyone need a ride (I can take one other person/bike)? Are we going to bring our own dinners for Saturday or do some kind of scouty foil packet campfire thing?

Ditto, what's the good word folks?

I've got a decent camp stove if we don't want to go the foil route. Easier than a fire for morning coffee/tea, too.

Tents? I've got a double if anybody wants to share. Promise I won't snuggle too much.

Lucia - I'm sans auto, so I'll take you or anyone else up on that ride.

I'm in either for the fri eve departure or sat morn. Is there a clear plan for either...also, I believe I will be able to drive, provided I can procure a bike rack.

i plan to leave late friday afternoon, to arrive at the campsite at dusk.

granite city is about an hour, so say 4:30 departure time should suffice.

i'm not sure if i'm driving or not. ie laura might come for friday night only, and if she does we'll be driving. that being said, i'll need a space home.

also, we should plan our dinners and breakfasts all together, with lunches being snacks. cheaper that way. just stop at a grocery store after meeting up.

just realized that andre had posted a map on the first post. easy to find.

found this
http://www.localhikes.com/Hikes/Monte_Cristo_7602.asp
first post calls it super easy, and even easier on bikes.

we need a meet up time and place. how about 8am saturday morning at dicks on 45th? is that too early or too north for people? leave by 830 caravan style, park in granite falls, get food somewhere there at a grocery store.

map if anyone needs it is here

I don't have time right now but will post a list of drivers and cars, there will be a Friday and a Saturday departure, most likely all will be returning at the sametime. Ben, maybe Theresa and Laura will drive up together and hike in together. (park near the pass) and then they can hike back out and drive home on Saturday. I'll have room. I can probably haul myself plus 2 people and bikes, that might be you and Mike OD.

I am thinking fettuccini Alfredo with chicken (or tuna) for one night and a hacked together gumboish-rice-sausage for another. Are there any extreme dietary issues of attendees? If so you may be best coming up with your own food.

We will probably need a few stoves and larger pots distributed through the crowd.

Here is the washout and stream crossing, I guess if a Hummer can't make it no one can
http://www.whidbey.com/mcpa/events.html

Also the snow level should be pretty high, Ro is there some non crampon/ice axes routes that would be equally worthy? I am up for swimming in silver lake.

Well, if I'm just hiking I think I will bring lighter boots, leave the ice axe and crampons for another time and bring the ashes of my poodle dog and go up to poodle dog pass to spread his ashes(I had always planned on doing that and just have not got around to it). Swimming in Silver lake sounds great. I plan on going up earlier than Ben and just taking my time to get to the town site(I'm slow as everybody knows).
