I'm building up my old (first) road bike. I bought some white Deep-Vs for it, now I need to get some hubs. This is going to be a geared cargo/touring bike. Any recommendations? I don't have a cassette yet, so I don't need to fit anything in particular.

this little company named Phil Wood makes some pretty sweet hubs, if your budget allows. Maybe you've heard of them.

Aren't Chris King the "Swarm of Bees" hubs?
I know the one thing I don't like about my Halo hub is that it is noisy when it freewheels.

Aaron is infamous for always offering to silence those noise free wheeling hubs by loading them up with Phil Wood Oil.
XT, LX, Deore, Ultegra, 105, Tiagra hubs all offer a great value for hubs. They have good seals, come with QR's, angular contact bearings bearings.... Not to piss on your wheel build but 700c Deep-Vs are really narrow rims, wide tires (>~28m) are not as nice with narrow rims. The Velocity Dyad, Alex Adventurer, Salsa Delgado, Sun CR-18 are all reasonably stout rims with a little wider cross sections. Depends what tires you plan to run but for a tour/cargo fatter can be nicer.

seconded. Pitfalls of touring with gear and narrow wheels/tires: More flats, less control at speed, more likely to suffer spoke-death and rim failure under load and from hazards.
With panniers or out in BFE no one is going to properly appreciate bling rims anyways. I ride the salsa delgados, and they are nice, strong and look really nice in black.

I'll be running 25s. That should be fine for my uses. I never load down very much while touring. Cooking gear?? You gotta be kidding me.
Supposing I want to get some 105s, should I scour Recycled, or what? I've never really bought just hubs before. Yes, I could call shops, but that would be work, and you guys already know. Whatever, I'm lazy.
