thats correct, boyeeez and grrrrs...the gods of bikedom have smiled on me yet again.
as i was speeding along the nice flat section of the BGT in Kenmore (i like to try to pace the cars) i hear sirens...bfd..then i hear skidding and screeching tires...okay, they got the bastard...next, as i look at my trusty mirror
THERES A GAWDDAMN SUV ON MY TAIL...ON THE BGT!!!
now the next bit is a blur (as most things like this are) but i think i dropped a gear (and a turdlett) and took OFF! got under the bridge and looked back ...and there were cops everywhere!
I went back and it seems he jumped the curb in an attempt to use the BGT as an escape, but FUBARed the front end in the process. I didnt stick around to bee all shmoozie with the po-po, but one gal i passed earlier said its a good thing im so fast. right place...right time!
<Evilgrin>

Speedytrikedness+policechase=SUV on the BGT /near miss
therefore:
policechase=(SUV on the BGT /near miss)-Speedytrikedness
SUV on the BGT=(Speedytrikedness+policechase)*near miss
Speedytrikedness=(SUV on the BGT /near miss)-policechase
near miss=SUV on the BGT/(Speedytrikedness+policechase)

er.
that's algebra.
Arithmetic is the aspect of the mathematics that deals with the properties of the manipulation of numbers, Algebra is the aspect that deals with the arrangement of symbolic terms arranged in equations. I am sure Pete or Zach could elucidate the differences with far more grace and eloquence that a person such as myself that has a lowly minor in mathematics. Pete, please feel free to assist me in calrifying my most crude explanation of these fields of the highest science.
I *would* normally express that this elucidates the differences between a scholar with a biology degree and a student with a chemistry degree, butI know that you are not your average biology major (and in fact thou are *stunningly* intelligent, if I may say so myself... in my ever humble opinion of fellow scholars) and I know just how hung over you are this fine morning, so I will attribute this slip of the identification of the first principles of our most loved and divine of the sciences to the haziness which results from the amphoteric nature of etoh the resultant fluidization of the lipid bilayer of the synaptic cleft rendering some randomness of the firing of neuronal reverberating circuits in your corpus striatum. Today may be a good day to reinforce the strained gradient of those potassium channels with perhaps a bananna or other fine potassium source such as a rich flavorful protein drink?
snicker. wink. giggle.

I've gone from hating this thread to loving it several times.

go on, go on...
meh. to me, the differences between arithmetic and algebra are moot because algebraic variables have never really seemed any different than actual numbers to me. you were demonstrating your prowess of rearranging equations, it matters not to me whether the terms in the equation are numbers or variables. like you said, i'm a biologist, not a mathematician.
i do know that there are only 2 n's in "banana" (unless you are like me and tend to get carried away typing it, bananananananana....). And my potassium gradients are just fine, thanks to vitamin water and breakfast.
