http://www.point83.com/graphics/handouts.pdf

can people that have access to a printer (corp sponsorship!), that are going out wednesday, print out a fuckton of these? we're going to hand them out to people on the ride, to give to motorists and people we meet to explain why we're doing what we're doing

cut them if you can, if not, bring them by and ill cut them up.
if anyone can have some out tonight, that would be even more super awesome.

henry, can you get that on the slb site when you get a chance?

and people with email (hey everyone!), we need a little boost to get this thing out to the press. if you have a few minutes and want to help out. can you drop a note to anyone in the press? newstips at KIRO, KING, KOMO, seattle times, the PI, stranger, weekly, ETC ETC? an email explaining whats going on, and why we're doing it, and inviting them to come out on wednesday and cover it for a story. seattlelikesbikes.org for more info is a good place to send them

the more people we get spreading the word around to the press the better
thanks

A few things:

"Under pressure from minority group of Fremont area" - shouldn't this be:
"Under pressure from a minority group of Fremont area"

and

"the city has opted to back of planned bike lanes" - should be
"the city has opted to back off planned bike lanes"

That should read: Spelling and Punctuation.

I'm only 50% kidding. I'm also volunteering to read your flyers, and suggest changes to spelling, punctuation, and tone.

Can someone explain why this flyer doesn't mention the OTHER reason we're doing this...the extended closure of the BGT?

I think itemizing BOTH points gives the issue more traction. The way it looks now, it sounds like we're whining about ONLY Stone Way sharrows.

anybody, anybody?

the idea was brought up that concentrating on too many issues at one time was too much to cram down peoples throats. the idea was to do this ride focusing on the stoneway bike lane issue, and to have another ride in a week or two directly aimed at suzi and the BGT issue.

Does anybody have contact info for the reporters that were helpful during the Zach/Critical Mass debacle last year?

Subj: We would like to ask your support in covering the "Ride for Fremont" on August 1st @ 5 pm

Body:
Seattle Likes Bikes.org
Ride for Fremont

WHY WE ARE RIDING:

Under pressure from a minority group of Fremont area businesses and the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, the city has opted to back off planned bike lanes between 34th and 40th Streets on Stone Way. These bike lanes, recommended in the Seattle Bike Master Plan, would allow cyclists to climb and descend Stone Way without interfering with motorist traffic.

The city has instead offered “sharrows” in the right-hand lane, placing cyclists and motorists in direct conflict for space while maintaining vastly different speeds uphill. The creation of bike lanes down the entire length of Stone Way is supported by many including:
Fremont Neighborhood Council,
Cascade Bicycle Club,
Seattle Pedestrian Advisory Board,
Seattle Bicycle Advisory Board,
Sierra Club Cascade Chapter,
Seattle Great City Initiative.

WHAT WE ARE ASKING CITIZENS TO DO:

1) Petition your neighbors and workplace to solicit a Safer Stone Way. www.cascade.org/Advocacy/stoneway.cfm for a petition and talking points.
2) When you visit a local business, let owners, managers and employees know that you support SDOT's original Stone Way design that accommodates both cyclists and pedestrians.
3) Contact your elected officials to support the original Stone Way design:
Mayor Greg Nickels
Seattle City Council members:
Nick Licata (President),
Jan Drago (Transportation Committee Chair)
Peter Steinbrueck (Urban Development & Planning Committee Chair)

Please remember, should this anti-bike/anti-pedestrian effort succeed, it will set a horrible precedent for Seattle's Bike Master Plan and for the upcoming Pedestrian Master Plan. Furthermore, it would embolden cycling-opponents to strip other bike-friendly facilities from the Plan. If this happens, no part of the 450-mile bicycle facility network called for in the Plan is safe.

For more information: www.seattlelikesbikes.org

Thanks for taking the time to make a better, safer community for everyone.

plagiarize this!!!

...To the Mayor...

Mr. Mayor,

This is my first time contacting a government official for any purpose, and I would hope you have a moment to read and possible address the listed concern.

I'm a bicycle commuter (trike actually), and have been using this mode of transportation for the better part of 20 year through out the greater Seattle metro area. There’s an escalating issue that the cycling community is going to address tomorrow in Fremont, and I wanted to make you aware of this in hopes that it may heighten the awareness of the danger bicyclists are going to face shortly.

The issue at hand is the loss of promised bike lanes on Stone way from the cross streets of 34th to 40th and replaced with sharrows. As listed in your bicycle Master Plan (in which I am a huge advocate), this area was to have dedicated bike lanes and be part of the Stone Way road diet.

Seattle Dept. of Transportation justification for eliminating the bicycle lanes and retaining the less-safe four-lane configuration was a 900% projected increase in traffic between 2001 and 2010. Six years into that time frame the predicted increases have not materialized. Automobile traffic on Stone Way has stayed flat between 2001 and 2007 according to an independent analysis commissioned by Cascade Bicycle Club and executed by renowned planning and engineering firm Sprinkle Consulting.

This is a huge disappointment to me and sends a very negative message to the entire Seattle bicycle community and sets precedence to those areas that have been or could be in opposition to the changes that the BMP will incorporate.

A website has been created to address this and inform the public and media of our stance, www.seattlelikesbikes.org. Please understand, as one of your supporters, I would appreciate your involvement in this matter and to open this matter up for further discussion.

Sincerely,

...to the City Council...

Dear City Officials,

As you are likely aware, there is an issue that has galvanized the Seattle Bicycle community to organize a protest ride through Fremont, this Wednesday, at 5 pm.

The issue that has created this activism is the loss of promised bike lanes on Stone way between 34th and 40th streets. As an individual that has spent well over two decades as a bicycle commuter, I was obviously thrilled to know the city has taken strides in the creation of the Master Bicycle Plan. However this recent move has not only blackened the eye of a yet un-official plan, it sets an anti-bike precedent to other areas in the region that, with the correct pressure and influence, the BMP can be modified without discussion from the bicycle community.

Backtracking from the original plans to run bike lanes down the length of Stone Way North in Fremont from Bridge Way to the Burke-Gilman Trail, the Seattle Department of Transportation decided earlier this year to leave a 6-block gap between the Trail and N 40th St, ostensibly to prevent excess car and truck congestion. This gap puts cyclists in harms way coming up from Gasworks Park or Fremont or coming down from Greenlake or Wallingford.

A three lane Stone Way with bicycle lanes would adequately serve motor vehicles while creating a new bicycle connection between a rapidly-growing residential center and the region's large bicycle facility. We know that the presence of good bicycle facilities leads to increased bicycle use for trips to work and other errands -- an important goal if our region is to grow without congestion and meet our climate change goals.

This outreach attempt is, I feel, my civic duty as a cyclist to ask for your assistance in this matter.

I apologize in advance if this is old hat or common knowledge, but after a little digging this is what I've found.

Suzie (or Suzanne) Burke (President of Fremont Dock Co. that owns AT LEAST 40 acres in the Fremont area, including History House, the Adobe Systems site and the Red Door Alehouse) made the call on this. It was the Fremont Chamber of Commerce's decision which she happens to be TREASURER of.

Here's the culprit:

And here's an interesting history of her campaign contributions:

Enjoy,

Dennis

Here is my letter:

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to you today concerning the controversy of scrapping plans for bicycle lanes on Stone way between 40th and the Burke Gilman Trail. This portion of Stone way is a critical link in the bicycle system between Fremont and Greenlake. This deviation from plans is in blatant conflict with the Puget Sound Regional Council’s Recommended Strategies to Implement Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Systems and Associated Programs.

Not building these bike lanes violates the first objective to “Provide safe and convenient bicycle and pedestrian access in all new and improved transportation projects.” Stone way is a current improvement transportation project. The northern part of the project does have bike lanes, which is great, but between 40th and 34th streets, this goal is not being achieved. The objective to “update local and state roadway design standards so that all such facilities include bicycle and pedestrian-friendly features that reflect community sensitivities and accommodate bicycle and pedestrian travel” will not be met unless the bicycle lanes are constructed.

As mentioned before, Stone way is a critical link between Greenlake and Fremont. The PSRC identifies ”BARRIERS AND MISSING LINKS” as a critical issue that must be addressed to improve bicycle safety and encourage bicycling. Transportation and city organizations are recommended to ”Give high priority to bicycle and pedestrian improvements that link existing facilities into a continuous network.” Is the removal of plans to construct bike lanes in this critical link showing that the City of Seattle is giving bicycling high priority?

This is a miserable failure to follow through with plans to construct a safe and complete network of bicycling right of ways in the City of Seattle. I urge you to change the lane configuration on Stone Way to include properly marked bicycle lanes.

Evan Siroky
