Did I mention that any kind of bike is welcome? This ride is just a fun way to get to a BBQ and we can haul your stuff if you don't have the cargo space.

Sweet.
I'm going mini-cargo and riding my Bike Friday Tikit with it's porteur rack.

Alex look forward to seeing the Tikit.
I am bringing my camp stove and a fortified mexican coffee/secret sauce that will keep people warm, awake and smiling. Everybody that wants some of this bring a coffee cup.

Your route is flawed around the Ballard bridge as you can't do what you have mapped out, and crossing Ballard bridge is just a bad idea. You can however, go out Nickerson to Fremont bridge and come back on the Burke. Far safer, far better bridge to cross and better ride.

I concur that the Ballard Bridge is total crap(and that you can't do what you mapped out), but if you want to retain a similar route and are determined to use that crap bridge, I would recommend taking a right on Dravus and a left on 15th. Milder incline, and it doesn't involve that awkward bridge heading over and around 15th from Fishermen's Terminal.

Hell, the locks are better. I just hate the ride once you get into the train yard until you're in Ballard. It's ugly and unsafe since cars are not used to seeing bikes there.
Me, I went down to SeaTac for today's 'cross race and got clobbered. Probably should've rode for barbeque...

You wouldn't have been clobbered on this ride. Lots of Dutch bikes ready to go. Man was it hot and muggy today, must have been close to 80 deg. Probably close to 30 or 40 people at the ride and finish. Props to Cascade members for showing up in neon with their Subaru with the bikes on top.
I didn't have much fun on the Labor Day Cross race I did a few years back either, S SeaTac is so dried out and sandy before the rains have really come back. I'd have felt better off on a mtn bike (which are allowed so long as you don't have forward facing bars, ie bar ends)

Ditto...
but fuck... this was the race to be clobbered... they had some pretty fast riders there...
What was your lap time... I was fuck all outa shape and i strained my hip... so only got like 10:30 or something like that for lap time... but I am glad i did it as it will get me to actually train a little this season...
I hated the first climb, I loved the long final downhill that terminated in the 90 degree log turn, hated the third lap of the climb after the log and road.
If I had known another pointy had been there i woulda got pics of you at the chicane by the coffee stand... you could really catch the misery on peoples faces there.
(FTR: SRAM chains suck ass. My powerlink exploded 3 miles after the race. At least now I know what was cliking and causing misshifts and skips all through the race, I thought I had a crack in my bottom bracket. That is the last time I EVER listen to some idiot who says "it's good enough". Good enough does not apply to hard training hard commuting or racing. argh. [not to say that is why my lap times were so shitty... that is because I am a fat pig and out of shape... )
Point83 should begin attending cyclocross races. I like bikes... all bikes, any bikes... hanging out drinking beer and watching races seems like something we all should do...

I had tons of fun. I intercepted the ride at the base of the West Seattle bridge with Andre, I didn't want to ride over the top of WSea to ABR just to come back down the hill.
Slow pace through 4th Ave to Pike Place (Willapa Bay Oysters, $6/doz!) for bbq goodness, then up to Westlake & Fremont bridge ultimatly ending at the 14th Ave Boat Launch in Ballard, where Dutch Bike Inc is headquartered. Tons of silly dutch bikes to demo and it seems everyone brought their nerdiest cargo bike possible. I demo'd some fun rides today, from a trike with 243 gearing options to a 50lb 8spd that felt like driving a buick.
Fun ride home through Myrtle Edwards, Alaskan and up Snake Hill to home. 11am- ~5pm. Beer, Oysters, Chicken, Sausage, Good times.

Bite me! Every day I wake up wishing it'll merely get to the high seventies. The weather in this place extremely sucks.

Blasphemy!
What's your alternative? Shimano chains suck ass, that's the brand that bent and took my rear derailleur and multiple spokes.
I've never had a problem with SRAM in 30,000+ miles of using them, and I'm not a small person.

Not trying to bust on John here, but most problems had with "powerlink" or other master link chains is with user error in instalation (particularly 10 speed). I've had no problems with my SRAM master link chains. (In the summer I race train and commute on the same chain) I've broken several Shimano chains, a couple whipperman (too expensive to keep buying those) but the only one that I will never buy again is KMC. I broke two of those in two weeks. They suck.

gawd...any of ya ever try Whipperman chains?
I broke my to the moon and back length of SRAM chain 2x on my first trike ride (and not at the quicklink), but after fixin' it, it did last some 5k miles (till I put on a 10 tooth rear and streched the shiiiiit outta it).
Chrome Whippermans are what I run now, and will from here on out. they have a burlier quick connector and seem tighter in tolerance.
Screw Shitmano
Screw KMC

Not bustin me... I didn't install it. It's a 9 speed... and I have had no problems with nicer SRAM chains that I have installed. I am just pissed about this specific chain...
And actually, the powerlink seems to have broken not because of it's own failure but due to tourqueing from the link next to it, which was a little fried anyway.
The chain has like 3-5 sticky links and I think what happened is that it caused the powerlinbk to twist... one of the plates is bent at a 90 degree angle and the pin snapped free...
I'm not sure what happened, but the race was uneventful, no crashes or hard hits at all, I read up on the PC 951 chain and most of the reviews I have read gave less than stellar opinions on it...many reports of spontaneous breakage.
I just get pissed when my equipment blows into 5 pieces under me when I am rushing to meet a friend for lunch. Bike parts shouldn't do that.
But yeah, I shouldn't have blanket ranted against SRAM like that... I was kinda pissed and ranting about my chain all day... sorry about that... I think as i was excising the link at john and stewart I was ranting obscenities to god, the devil and some guy in a ram pickup...
Bu t yeah my previous sram chain is one of the expensive ones I think a 990, and I loved that chain and abused it for 18 months and it shifted like a dream. I just replaced it with a 951 because a mechanic said I wouldn't notice a difference and have had nothing but problems.
So to clarify... I'm just not pro-cheapchain anymore.
Good to have your opinion on kmc...
and I am thinking of wippperman chains... or really going back to the sram 990...
btw stanklor... when the hell are you going to ride? yer never on the rides I am on.

Thanks. I was going to call them today, but didn't get a chance.
It's a small back Trek-brand toolbag and an older scratched up Topeak Road Morph pump.

I have your pump & seatback at ABR.
I can get it to Capitol Hill if that's easier.
206 351-6595 is my cell or call the shop.

Thanks Greg. You or anyone else going on the Thursday ride? If so can you bring them down? Otherwise I'll get over to the shop one evening this week or next (and bring you guys a 6-pack for rescuing my stuff).
